Text to read: John 2:13 It was almost time for the festival of Pesach in Y’hudah, so Yeshua went up to Yerushalayim. 14 In the Temple grounds he found those who were selling cattle, sheep and pigeons, and others who were sitting at tables exchanging money. 15 He made a whip from cords and drove them all out of the Temple grounds, the sheep and cattle as well. He knocked over the money-changers’ tables, scattering their coins; 16 and to the pigeon-sellers he said, “Get these things out of here! How dare you turn my Father’s house into a market?” 17 (His talmidim later recalled that the Tanakh says, “Zeal for your house will devour me.” )[a] 18 So the Judeans confronted him by asking him, “What miraculous sign can you show us to prove you have the right to do all this?” 19 Yeshua answered them, “Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up again.” 20 The Judeans said, “It took 46 years to build this Temple, and you’re going to raise it in three days?” 21 But the “temple” he had spoken of was his body. 22 Therefore, when he was raised from the dead, his talmidim remembered that he had said this, and they trusted in the Tanakh and in what Yeshua had said.[Footnotes:

Mark 10:17 As he was starting on his way, a man ran up, kneeled down in front of him and asked, “Good rabbi, what should I do to obtain eternal life?” 18 Yeshua said to him, “Why are you calling me good? No one is good except God! 19 You know the mitzvot — ‘Don’t murder, don’t commit adultery, don’t steal, don’t give false testimony, don’t defraud, honor your father and mother, . . .’”[a] 20 “Rabbi,” he said, “I have kept all these since I was a boy.” 21 Yeshua, looking at him, felt love for him and said to him, “You’re missing one thing. Go, sell whatever you own, give to the poor, and you will have riches in heaven. Then come, follow me!” 22 Shocked by this word, he went away sad; because he was a wealthy man.
23 Yeshua looked around and said to his talmidim, “How hard it is going to be for people with wealth to enter the Kingdom of God!” 24 The talmidim were astounded at these words; but Yeshua said to them again, “My friends, how hard it is to enter the Kingdom of God! 25 It’s easier for a camel to pass through a needle’s eye than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God.” 26 They were utterly amazed and said to him, “Then who can be saved?” 27 Yeshua looked at them and said, “Humanly, it is impossible, but not with God; with God, everything is possible.”[Footnotes:

John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for John 2:13-22
Verse 14
[14] And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:
Oxen, and sheep, and doves — Used for sacrifice: And the changers of money - Those who changed foreign money for that which was current at Jerusalem, for the convenience of them that came from distant countries.
Verse 15
[15] And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables;
Having made a scourge of rushes — (Which were strewed on the ground,) he drove all out of the temple, (that is, the court of it,) both the sheep and the oxen - Though it does not appear that he struck even them; and much less, any of the men. But a terror from God, it is evident, fell upon them.
Verse 17
[17] And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up.
Psalms 69:9.
Verse 18
[18] Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
Then answered the Jews — Either some of those whom he had just driven out, or their friends: What sign showest thou? - So they require a miracle, to confirm a miracle!
Verse 19
[19] Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.
This temple — Doubtless pointing, while he spoke, to his body, the temple and habitation of the Godhead.
Verse 20
[20] Then said the Jews, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou rear it up in three days?
Forty and six years — Just so many years before the time of this conversation, Herod the Great had begun his most magnificent reparation of the temple, (one part after another,) which he continued all his life, and which was now going on, and was continued thirty-six years longer, till within six or seven years of the destruction of the state, city, and temple by the Romans.
Verse 22
[22] When therefore he was risen from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this unto them; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.
They believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said — Concerning his resurrection.
Mark 10:17-27
Verse 17
[17] When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
I came not to call the righteous — Therefore if these were righteous I should not call them. But now, they are the very persons I came to save.
Verse 18
[18] And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not?
Matthew 9:14; Luke 5:33.
Verse 23
[23] And it came to pass, that he went through the corn fields on the sabbath day; and his disciples began, as they went, to pluck the ears of corn.
Matthew 12:1; Luke 6:1.
Verse 26
[26] How he went into the house of God in the days of Abiathar the high priest, and did eat the shewbread, which is not lawful to eat but for the priests, and gave also to them which were with him?
In the days of Abiathar the high priest — Abimelech, the father of Abiathar, was high priest then; Abiathar himself not till some time after. This phrase therefore only means, In the time of Abiathar, who was afterward the high priest. 1 Samuel 21:6.
Verse 27
[27] And he said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath:
The Sabbath was made for man — And therefore must give way to man's necessity.

Mark 10:19 Exodus 20:12–13(16); Deuteronomy 5:16–17(20)]
On this Thrid Sunday of Lent, we look at the passage of Scripture where Jesus goes into Jerusalem because it was a Holy Festival. He entered the Temple becoming so angry that he took a whip and began turning over all the tables that was selling sacrifices for the Festival sacrifices. He cast them out saying that My Father's House is a House of Prayer and you have made it a Den of Thieves. This was the area of the Temple where women, children, and Gentiles could worship God because they could not go into the Sanctuary where only the men could go. The leaders of the Temple began asking Him to show them a sign that He is the Messiah, but He only spoke that this Temple would be torn down and rebuilt within three days. The leaders assumed that He was talking about the Temple building responding that it will be torn down and rebuilt in three days because this Temple took many years if not 500 years to build this. Jesus was referring to His own body that is the Temple that Housed the God known as the Messiah. His disciples remebered what he said after his death and resurrection as well as the Scripture passage that one's zeal will consume me. We look at this some two thousand years later, but too often we do not even understand about the places of worship that we worship in. we take places that are meant to draw fellowship for the congregation and sell things that could be sold outside this area. How do you realte to this passage? What characters in the story do you relate to? How have you seen this lived out in our churches of today? We come to receive God's Grace as we come forward to partake of the Holy Eucharist singing the Hymn "The Temple of God" by Daniel S. Warner
1. Not in the temples made with hands,
Though beautiful by art,
But God in mercy condescends
To dwell within my heart.
Refrain:
Oh, glory to Jesus so sweet in me,
My body, Thy temple shall forever be.
2. How wonderful that He would take
This poor abode of sin,
And wash me in His precious blood,
And now abide within.
Refrain:
Oh, glory to Jesus so sweet in me,
My body, Thy temple shall forever be.
3. No more I think of God afar,
But see Thee, Lord, within;
Oh, shine in me, Thou morning star,
And keep Thy temple clean.
Refrain:
Oh, glory to Jesus so sweet in me,
My body, Thy temple shall forever be.
4. O Lord, enshrined within my breast,
My constant joy and peace;
My soul can now forever rest,
Secure in Thy embrace.
Refrain:
Oh, glory to Jesus so sweet in me,
My body, Thy temple shall forever be.
