The Church of the Resurrection of Leasood, Kansas, United States eNote from Pastor Adam Hamilton for Friday, 27 March 2015
Dear Resurrection Family,
This is set to be an exciting weekend! Tomorrow each of our campuses is hosting our annual Easter Egg Hunt. Leawood’s hunt begins at 10 am in the Sanctuary. The egg hunt and all other activities begin at 10:15 am and run until Noon and will take place rain or shine. This is an awesome family event (grandkids too!). We’ll have moon walks, pics with the Easter bunny, a petting zoo, photo booths and more. We are collecting peanut butter for our Backpacks with Hunger program and all are invited to bring 18 oz. jars of peanut butter to bless low -ncome families. Invite your neighbors and friends. No registration is necessary. Most of the event will be indoors but you will want to dress warm for the Egg Hunt and Petting Zoo. (For a list of the time and locations of the Easter Egg Hunts at each of our campuses, click on the campus name, Rez West, Rez Downtown, Rez Blue Springs).
This weekend is also Palm Sunday/Passion Sunday. The service begins with the children bringing in the palms as we sing Hosanna and remember the events of that first Palm Sunday when hundreds gathered to welcome Jesus into Jerusalem, hailing him with the greeting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" Hosanna means, "Save us now!", and it was both a shout of affirmation that they saw Jesus as the Messiah and plea for Jesus to deliver them from the Romans. Halfway through the service we shift to Passion Sunday. Just before the sermon we’ll build the cross on the chancel. My sermon this weekend will continue our focus on those who stood by the cross as we consider the Roman soldiers at the cross. They beat him, crucified him, and cast lots for his clothes. But by the end of that day at least one of them pronounced that Jesus was in fact the [or a] son of God. As is our tradition, we’ll end the service this weekend in silence, extinguishing the Christ candle that was lit on Christmas Eve.
Our Spring Confirmation class at Leawood will be confirmed this Sunday at 2 pm in our sanctuary. We have 134 confirmands in the spring class and Sunday they will publically profess their faith in Christ and becoming adult members of our congregation. See below for a complete list of our confirmands.
This Sunday night plan to watch or record a PBS special airing on KCPT at 5:30 pm calledResurrecting Haiti. It will look at the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and will highlight the work you have done as a church in Haiti as many of you have served on mission teams there as well as provided resources for our partners in Haiti. This program was filmed by a team from UMKC.
This weekend marks the beginning of Holy Week. On Thursday of this coming week we’ll hold our annualMaundy Thursday Communion Service at 7 pm. It is on this night that we recall the Last Supper and share together in Holy Communion. This is a beautiful and meaningful service. On Friday we’ll have ourGood Friday Prayer Vigil marking the six hours of Jesus’ crucifixion. Join us any time between 6 am and 10:00 pm in the Wesley Covenant Chapel. We’ll also have a Good Friday Prayer Walk with stations throughout our Leawood Campus to walk and pray - we have prayer guides for both the vigil and the walk - check in at Wesley Chapel. Finally, at 3 pm, the hour Christ died, we’ll have a brief service of prayer, scripture and music to reflect upon the death of Jesus - this will occur in conjunction with the prayer vigil in the Wesley Chapel.
We need your help for Easter worship services. We’re expecting over 20,000 people for worship but we can’t do this without many of you volunteering to serve. We need help next Friday beginning at 9:30 am, with bulletin stuffing. E-mail Gia Moser here to volunteer, gia.moser@cor.org. We’re also in need of nursery volunteers - sign up here. We’ll need extra ushers and greeters - sign up here. And we’ll need folks to help us welcome and deliver mugs to first time visitors - sign up to help here.
Which Easter service will you plan to attend? I’d remind you of the services that had the most empty seats last year - in some cases over 1,000 empty seats: Saturday night at 7 pm, Sunday morning 7 am,9:45 am at the Overland Park Convention Center and Sunday night at 5 pm. The 9 and 11 am services in the Sanctuary and Chapel were completely full and we had hundreds sitting in the narthex or standing for the services. For a complete list of worship times and locations, click here. We need 2,000 people to join me at 9:45 am at the Overland Park Convention Center. If you are willing to do that, please let us know with this online form.
Finally, April 13 will mark the one-year anniversary of the shooting deaths of Teresa LaManno and Resurrection members Dr. William Corporon and Reat Underwood in a hate crime. Easter will kick off a week of events focused on overcoming evil with good. The week is called, SevenDays: Make a Ripple, Change the World. I’d love for you to take a look at the website which offers suggestions for observing these seven days and lists several planned events. Take a look at the video there as well.
The highlight of the week is the Peace Walk, on Monday, April 13. The walk will be from the Jewish Community Center, past Village Shalom and ending at the Church of the Resurrection. I’m hoping many of you will join me for this walk. People will park at Resurrection and busses will take us to the Jewish Community Center to start the walk. It will end with light snacks and celebration at Resurrection. The first 1,000 of who register receive a free t-shirt. For more details and to register, click here.
If you’ve not looked lately, take a look at the live feed of the construction site at Leawood where you can see the basement taking shape. The space you see being excavated includes 10,000 square feet of mission space, offices for our music ministry, communications and tech arts departments, a workshop and bathrooms. Click here to take a look!
I’m looking forward to seeing you in worship this weekend!
Adam
