The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection of Leawood, Kansas, United States eNote from Pastor Adam Hamilton for Saturday, 14 March 2015
Dear Resurrection Family,
I hope you are doing well and enjoying the amazing spring weather in Kansas City. I am on vacation this week with LaVon, enjoying the chance to read, rest, play and recharge after an exciting but busy last couple of months.
If you are in town this weekend plan to be in worship, or if you are out of town for Spring Break, join on line. We’ll continue the series of sermons entitled, Witnesses, learning from those who were standing near the cross as Jesus was crucified. According to Mark, Jesus was crucified about 9 am (though John places the time at noon). He did not die until 3 pm. During the intervening six hours Jesus spoke to those near the cross, and to God.
While the victims of crucifixion were experiencing excruciating pain (the word excruciating comes from the same root as crucify) they could, with some difficulty, speak to those around them from their crosses. You may recall that the victim’s feet were seldom more than two to three feet off the ground. Jesus’ mother could have touched his chest from where she stood near the cross. John, his beloved disciple, was at the foot of the cross as well. One of the most tender acts from the cross were the words of concern Jesus expressed for his mother’s care as he died. This week we’ll consider his words to Mary and to John. Pastor Scott Chrostek will be preaching live at Leawood and via video at Downtown and Blue Springs, while Pastor Jason Gant will be preaching live at Resurrection West.
I learned something this week reading the Resurrection eNews that comes out on Wednesdays. Did you know that The Church of the Resurrection is the Volunteer Reception Center (VRC) for the eight-county Greater Kansas City area? This means that when a disaster response operation is activated, all volunteers will be directed to Resurrection to register and receive assignments. Tomorrow, there will be a city-wide training exercise. If you are driving by the Leawood campus this weekend, you might see emergency response vehicles that are part of this event. You can learn more about Resurrection's Disaster Response team online. This is one more way that our church seeks to serve the Greater Kansas City area.
This next week we have serve teams in Haiti and Jamaica. Please remember them in your prayers. Have you considered an international mission trip? We’ve got teams leaving for Honduras this summer working on the expansion to the John Wesley School we funded with our Christmas Eve offering (along with a host of other projects). Honduras is one of the easiest international mission trips - it is just a two-hour flight from Houston. The experience is really amazing. If you are interested, download application online.
I’ve got to run. I look forward to being in worship online this weekend. If you are out of town, join me as we worship together this fourth weekend of Lent!
Blessings
Adam
