When a first grader came to Della Curry crying because she couldn’t pay for her lunch, Della did what anyone with a heart would do -- she gave her a lunch for free.Unfortunately, the elementary school where Della was employed has a policy against never giving students free food -- the first three times a student is unable to pay, the lunch is charged to their parents’ accounts. The fourth time, the school provides a cheese sandwich and milk.
Della Curry had seen the ridicule children endured when their peers saw them with that cheese on a bun. She also saw these children’s energy wane because they weren’t being nutritionally sustained by the smaller lunch. Because of this, Della sometimes paid for the lunches herself or occasionally let kids keep hot lunches when they couldn’t pay. Apparently, feeding hungry kids was enough of a crime to get Ms. Curry fired from her job.
We live in a country where food is thrown away while many kids go hungry. People like Della Curry should be applauded for standing up for children’s welfare, not fired. Join me in calling on the Cherry Creek School District to reinstate Della Curry.
It’s not students’ fault that their parents make too much to qualify for the free lunch program, but not enough to pay for hot meals. What’s more, unused lunches are just thrown out at the end of the lunch period. Della Curry was doing the responsible thing. And in the course of the year she worked at the school, she only gave away about 20 lunches.
To me, Della Curry is a hero. Since she was fired, she has used her experience to put a spotlight on childhood hunger. A person who cares this much belongs in our schools, and together we may be able to get Della Curry her job back. Please sign and share the petition today.
