My name is Jason Muller, and I was fired for trying to start a union. My colleague, Josh Deases, was fired 24 hours after me. What did we have in common? We were both leaders in the effort to unionize our OK Foods plant. We had testified against our employer at a National Labor Relations Board hearing, and were official observers at our plant’s election to unionize. Now, we both find ourselves fighting for our livelihoods.
All we wanted was the fair pay, benefits, and treatment we deserved. Now, I’m not even sure how I will take care of my family. Our bills are stacking up and we could lose our home, all because I spoke up for workers’ basic rights.
OK Foods CEO Trent Goins said nobody would be fired for trying to start a union. Please stand with us in asking him to take action and right this wrong. Sign our petition demanding that we be rehired at our jobs.
The “reasons” for our firing were laughable. Feeling unwell, I went to the back dock to take a breather and put my head down -- it’s a place where a lot of the workers take breaks. The next thing I knew, I was terminated for “sleeping on the job”. 24 hours later, Josh was fired for “poor job performance”. These reasons were false, manufactured to cover up the real motivation -- retribution for our unionizing efforts.
The United Food & Commercial Workers International Union Local 1000 has filed an official complaint with the National Labor Relations Board, but our bills can’t wait much longer. As much as we feel wronged, the OK Foods plant is one of the few places to work in town. It’s one of the reasons we fought so hard to make it a better place for its workers.
We need your support to get OK Foods to do the right thing -- allow us to return to work. Whatever your beliefs are about unions, workers shouldn’t be afraid to speak up for better conditions. Please stand with Josh Deases and myself, and support our petition today.
