SUMMERTIME...
and the LEARNING is AWESOME!
As a kid, didn’t you just love summer vacation? I lived for it! Little league baseball, fishing, hiking and camping along Lake Ontario in Upstate New York. I couldn’t wait for vacation and dreaded Labor Day when the school year would begin all over again. But now, I have a different perspective.
I would like to challenge you, in addition to whatever fun you have planned, to see this summer as a time for learning. This week, I listened to a guy in one of my men’s Bible study groups who recently retired, confess (with deep regret) that he put off really learning about his faith until now. Another friend admitted to me that he could not remember when he last read a book. Guys, at the risk of stating the obvious, the primary method God has chosen to speak to the human race is in the form of a book.
Our Discipleship Team has planned many learning events for you this summer. For example, I have been working for weeks on a teaching for this Tuesday evening on how the Old and New Testaments fit together. (For information click HERE.) I believe this session will help you better understand your faith and answer questions you have long had. Our church bookstore is filled with wonderful, inspiring and faith-building books. I challenge you to read at least one substantial book this summer about the life and ministry of Jesus. If you think you know all that stuff, I promise you that you don’t! May this summer be a time of great learning.
There has been alot of press about how the emerging generation is not interested in the Christian faith. Let me introduce you to my friend Addison Price who will dispel that erroneous report!
Every Blessing,
Jeff
Interview with Addison Price:

Tell us a bit about yourself. Are you a Kansas City native?
I am 28 years old and have lived in Kansas City most of my life. I’m a true beach bum that loves the ocean and sea but have not set sail out of here yet. I love this city too much! I feel that this city is experiencing a special time right now that will help shape the fruitfulness we all can enjoy.
You serve here at the Church of the Resurrection. What exactly are you doing at the church?
I serve at the church as the Director of Community Outreach. The position did not exist until I wrote the job description and presented it to the church on how I thought it could reach people in the community (mainly focusing on young adults), build meaningful relationships, and work with local businesses to have a more thriving community. I am doing this by seeking out ways that we can better love our neighbors in 8 local apartment complexes. I am also observing, learning, and working with other churches in Kansas City that are spreading the good news from the Gospel and focusing on forming relationships with others.
“We do life better … when we do it together!”
We read a lot about how the emerging generation is not interested in traditional Christianity. From your experience how true is that and how should the church respond to this?
I believe that the emerging generations are forming the traditional ways of Christianity into ways that are in line with how they see the world today, not how it once was. How you see the world determines how you live. I am reading a book called The Next Christians by Gabe Lyons. I highly recommend this book! The author says young adults see the world “as it ought to be.” I agree completely with this statement and feel I can speak for the emerging generations as I am one of those “millennials.” Those 5 words “as it ought to be” mean that young adults are about restoring the world to holiness. The media has done a great job of polluting our minds with false truths but what we can trust most and know to be true is what others do for us. The church can respond to this movement among young adults by going to the people vs. saying “come to us and you will be saved.” We’ve all heard that saying before. If the church understands that young adults want to explain (the church must listen with open-mindedness) how they see the world, then it will be pretty clear how the church can work with that person to be a faithful follower. For example I know this guy who is 26 and he didn’t have a church home and his relationship with God was weak. I went to him and he explained that he sees the world’s poverty because of his own living conditions and those around him. I worked with him for about a year & a half on how he wanted to change the poverty around him. The simple act of going to him, meeting him where he is at in his life stage, hearing how he sees the world, and then doing some simple service work for others; he has now grown into attending church regularly, is involved in small group service work, and calls himself a Christian because he is helping restore the world “as it ought to be.”
