Greetings Resurrection Blue Springs,
I’m delivering my enote from a coffee shop this morning as our electricity is out after the storm last night. The lightening show was pretty spectacular as the storms were moving through. Last night I stood outside on the deck for a while and watched the clouds. I feel as though I get some sense of the creative power and majesty of God watching a storm on the move.
I’m glad to see though that all the rain will be out of the way for our men’s retreat tonight at Camp Timberlake. There is a group of 28 men planning to participate in this first, Blue Springs only, “Iron Sharpens Iron” retreat. I know the lead team, under the direction of Mark Maschger, has spent many hours planning and preparing for this event. I would ask that we be in prayer for this group through Saturday evening as they come together for fellowship, learning and fun. Some pretty powerful things can happen when you bring people together in a setting like this.
This Sunday we’re starting off a new sermon series called “The Stories Jesus Told.” When Jesus taught he often spoke in parables – short stories, which helped to answer important questions about God and how we are meant to live. Through the parables Jesus sought to reveal the truths of the Kingdom of God and to teach us the meaning of life. Some of these stories are easy to understand and others more challenging.
For the next four weeks we’ll be exploring some of these parables of Jesus. This week I’ll be preaching live and we will be taking a look at two short parables; the Hidden Treasure and the Pearl of Great Price. I love the parables and am excited to share some of the challenges and twists found when you dig deeper into Jesus’ stories.
One last thing, Mike Ash, our Worship and Community Life Director has sold his house in Grandview and is looking to move his family closer to our church community. If you know of a rental or great home for purchase in our area, please let Mike know. He and his family are anxious to get moved this direction.

“What Comes After Why?” Women’s Study – Thursday nights, July 9 – Aug. 13, 6:30-8 pm. This 6-week “light” summer Bible study looks at the recent sermon series based on Adam Hamilton’s book, Why? and readings from the Bible. Patricia will facilitate biblically-based discussions about specific ways we can cope with many of the harsh realities and stresses of life but still remain whole, joyful and faithful to our Lord. Life is what it is and this class is meant to be upbeat and fun for all! Note: Because it is the busy summer, each class will be developed to stand-alone and attendees are welcome to come to a few or all of the classes. NO HOMEWORK! Handout materials provided. Purchase of the book is optional. Please bring your Bible to class each week! Childcare available on request. Sign up at Guest Services or online here.
Special Baptism Service – Sunday, July 12, 5 pm The last few summers we have held an outdoor baptism service for anyone desiring to be baptized or who would like to re-affirm their baptism vows. We will baptize by immersion or sprinkling in a short service and then have a time of fellowship afterwards with a potluck supper. The service will be held at the Scott’s backyard pool, 1308 NE Hilltop Dr. We'd love to have any and all attend and the baptism candidates are encouraged to invite family and friends. You're welcome to bring your swimsuits and swim afterwards too. Sign up here or at Guest Services. A brief pre-baptism meeting with Pastor Penny is a prerequisite to this event.
