Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"Be Made Well"
Mark 5:21-43
Text:
Mark 5:21 Yeshua crossed in the boat to the other side of the lake, and a great crowd gathered around him. 22 There came to him a synagogue official, Ya’ir by name, who fell at his feet 23 and pleaded desperately with him, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Please! Come and lay your hands on her, so that she will get well and live!”
24 He went with him; and a large crowd followed, pressing all around him. 25 Among them was a woman who had had a hemorrhage for twelve years 26 and had suffered a great deal under many physicians. She had spent her life savings; yet instead of improving, she had grown worse. 27 She had heard about Yeshua, so she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his robe; 28 for she said, “If I touch even his clothes, I will be healed.” 29 Instantly the hemorrhaging stopped, and she felt in her body that she had been healed from the disease. 30 At the same time, Yeshua, aware that power had gone out from him, turned around in the crowd and asked, “Who touched my clothes?” 31 His talmidim responded, “You see the people pressing in on you; and still you ask, ‘Who touched me?’” 32 But he kept looking around to see who had done it. 33 The woman, frightened and trembling, because she knew what had happened to her, came and fell down in front of him and told him the whole truth. 34 “Daughter,” he said to her, “your trust has healed you. Go in peace, and be healed of your disease.”
35 While he was still speaking, people from the synagogue official’s house came, saying, “Your daughter has died. Why bother the rabbi any longer?” 36 Ignoring what they had said, Yeshua told the synagogue official, “Don’t be afraid, just keep trusting.” 37 He let no one follow him except Kefa, Ya‘akov and Yochanan, Ya‘akov’s brother. 38 When they came to the synagogue official’s house, he found a great commotion, with people weeping and wailing loudly. 39 On entering, he said to them, “Why all this commotion and weeping? The child isn’t dead, she’s just asleep!” 40 And they jeered at him. But he put them all outside, took the child’s father and mother and those with him, and went in where the child was. 41 Taking her by the hand, he said to her, “Talita, kumi!” (which means, “Little girl, I say to you, get up!”). 42 At once the girl got up and began walking around; she was twelve years old. Everybody was utterly amazed. 43 He gave them strict orders to say nothing about this to anyone, and told them to give her something to eat.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for: Mark 5:21-43
Verse 21
[21] And when Jesus was passed over again by ship unto the other side, much people gathered unto him: and he was nigh unto the sea.
Luke 8:40.
Verse 22
[22] And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet,
One of the rulers of the synagogue — To regulate the affairs of every synagogue, there was a council of grave men. Over these was a president, who was termed the ruler of the synagogue. Sometimes there was no more than one ruler in a synagogue. Matthew 9:18; Luke 8:41.
Verse 25
[25] And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years,
Matthew 9:20; Luke 8:43.
Verse 37
[37] And he suffered no man to follow him, save Peter, and James, and John the brother of James.
John, the brother of James — When St. Mark wrote, not long after our Lord's ascension, the memory of St. James, lately beheaded, was so fresh, that his name was more known than that of John himself.
Verse 40
[40] And they laughed him to scorn. But when he had put them all out, he taketh the father and the mother of the damsel, and them that were with him, and entereth in where the damsel was lying.
Them that were with him — Peter, James, and John.
Verse 43
[43] And he charged them straitly that no man should know it; and commanded that something should be given her to eat.
He charged them that no man should know it — That he might avoid every appearance of vain glory, might prevent too great a concourse of people, and might not farther enrage the scribes and Pharisees against him; the time for his death, and for the full manifestation of his glory, being not yet come.
He commanded something should be given her to eat — So that when either natural or spiritual life is restored, even by immediate miracle, all proper means are to be used in order to preserve it.

Faith that Makes us Whole
There has been more conversation about homelessness in our community in the past few weeks; a recent countywide study gave us new numbers to describe a disturbing increase in the number of people who are homeless in our community and region.
This study has provided occasion for more conversations--and attempts to name solutions and designate blame. I've been disturbed to read allegations that the problem of homelessness in our community is made worse by churches like ours that offer food to the hungry, and I've been offended by ways of talking about homeless people that imply they are worth less than other people. Homelessness is not a problem that we solve by simply pushing it to someone else's backyard.
Again and again in our Gospel, I read stories of Jesus lifting up and healing the people who had seemed to be insignificant. And he commands us to do the same--to serve the "least of these" in our midst.
At Shared Bread each Wednesday, hungry people are invited to sit at tables and eat. We do not ask people to prove their hunger or demonstrate their need; we serve people with homes and without. We share food with those who come because we believe we are commanded to care for others, and because caring for others is part of what makes us whole--it helps us be remade in the image of Christ.
Living out our faith by serving the hungry is one way we are made whole, healed and given a way to share in salvation.
Like you, I hope for a solution to homelessness in our community, and will collaborate in efforts to do so. In the meantime, I'm also committed to continuing the work of offering food to the hungry and affirming the dignity and worth of all people.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Preparing Our Hearts, Minds And Soul For Sunday Worship
"I've been thinking about how we prepare for Sunday morning worship in my home. Lately, we wake up, walk the dog, eat and rush off to church; yet, I know this rushing around doesn't help my heart and mind prepare to receive God and to bless others.
Hebrews 10:22-25 says in part, " let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings. Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing." I think this may be the only bible verse that specifically encourages regular church attendance, and, as a mom of two teens, it's been helpful to quote!
So, how do I draw near to God with a sincere heart and spur others on toward love and good deeds for Sunday worship? I've been thinking of ideas for my family. Here are a few I discovered..."
"Preparing For Sunday Worship" by Johnna Kosnoff

I’ve been thinking about how we prepare for Sunday morning worship in my home. Lately, we wake up, walk the dog, eat and rush off to church; yet, I know this rushing around doesn’t help my heart and mind prepare to receive God and to bless others.
Hebrews 10:22-25 says in part, “ let us draw near to God with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings. Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing.” I think this may be the only bible verse that specifically encourages regular church attendance, and, as a mom of two teens, it’s been helpful to quote!
So, how do I draw near to God with a sincere heart and spur others on toward love and good deeds for Sunday worship? I’ve been thinking of ideas for my family. Here are a few I discovered.
  • During the week, pray for Pastor Molly, staff, musicians, ushers, greeters, liturgists and other laity who strive to help us meet God on Sunday morning.
  • Read the scripture prior to Sunday and begin to think about how it applies to my life. The scripture for Sunday is published in the Thursday eNews. (If you have young kids, you could post a special verse from it on your refrigerator to share with them during the week.)
  • Pray that God will reveal what I need to receive while at church and that I will receive it with gratefulness and humility.
  • Pray that God will help me rightly respond to Him in my song, confession, hearing the sermon, receiving communion and giving of my finances.
  • Pray that God will help me remember that worship is not just about me; ask him to show me how to spur others on in love as I greet, speak, pray for and care for others throughout the morning.
  • Arrive early enough to sit and read through the bulletin, think through the scripture, meditate on the songs we are about to sing and pray that God’s Spirit will speak to all who are present as His word is preached, sung, read and studied. And, this week, it would be helpful to pray that God will remind me of specific worship details over the past year that will help me thoughtfully complete the questionnaire prepared by our Worship and Music Committee.
Preparing for worship takes a little extra time but I think what I receive back from God will make the investment worth the time. I am curious if you do something special to prepare your heart, mind and soul for Sunday worship. If so, will you share with me?

A Worship Survey
As we reach the 1-year anniversary of our blended 10:30 worship service, our Worship and Music Committee wants to know more about your worship experiences.
This Sunday, June 7, during 10:30 worship we will invite you to take a moment to answer these reflective questions. In hopes that you might start thinking about them sooner, here are the questions:
During the past year, what have you found meaningful and helpful during worship?
During the past year, what musical highlights and/or presentations do you recall as having an impact on your Sunday worship?
Has anything gotten in the way of your experiencing a meaningful worship? If so, please explain.
Do you invite others to worship with us? Why or why not? (If so, what do you highlight in your invitation?)
What do you take with you from Sunday worship for the following week?
Download and print the survey here, complete it online here, or fill it out in worship June 7.

To All Men of the church,
During the January 31st Check into Church planning meeting, there were a number of men that said they would be interested in a Men's Ministry group. A number of us have met one Sunday between services, then we have met twice on Monday evenings. The last meeting was Tuesday evening and we had a discussion on being "rich". We watched a video, then had a discussion on what this means to each of us with our Christian lives using scripture from 1 Timothy 6:17-19.
Our next topic will involve the Bible, led by Don Pearson. Don has provided a study guide and an outline for the discussion.
We have established the 3rd Monday as the normal meeting date, but the next meeting will be held on June 15th at 7:00 PM. We want to invite all men to this meeting. Please respond to the Realm Email to register for the group. We would like to build a group listing of all that are interested.
Regards,
Chad Ahrens, Gary Baughman, Paul Caldwell, Carl Harrison, John Kirk, Don Pearson, Darrell Uran & Joe Zeiler
BOOK CLUB: July 16, 7pm
Book Club met for the first time on May 28 to discuss Father Greg Boyle's book, "Tattoos on the Heart." Discussion and observations, together with laughs, digressions, and yummy desserts, made for an enjoyable evening.
Next gathering will be Thursday, July 16, 7:00pm, in the May Day Parlor, and the book selected for discussion is "The Well Women." A contemporary novel by Ladine Housholder, it tells the story of a group of women friends who travel to the West Bank city of Nablus to visit the historic site of Jacob's Well, where Jesus encountered the Samaritan woman. This book is on the UMW 2015 reading program list, and available for sign-out in MayDay Parlor. It is also available from Amazon. We hope you will circle the date and plan to join us.

A Caring Community
Did you know that we have a ministry that organizes meals and other assistance for church folks in times of need? In the past, we've helped arrange rides to medical appointments, meals for people recovering from surgery, and more. Leila Grantz coordinates this ministry, using online sign-up tools. If you want to be a part of the group that she emails when there is an opportunity to help, or if you know someone who's in need of a little help, please contact the church office or Leila.
We are currently organizing meals in for the Schempp family during Daniel's deployment, and also coordinate delivery of a Shared Bread meal to the Davisons each week.
