The DNA Update for United Methodistsfor June 2015 with Dr. Don Nations of Sarasota,Florida, United States

In This Issue:
  • Beyond What I Want
  • Have a Mission Trip Come to You
  • Beyond What I Want
Life is about what we want, at least for many of us. Oh we dress it up to make it sound more spiritual, generous, etc. but when push comes to shove we want what we want. We may have to negotiate sometimes but what is most important to us is getting our way. Even our acts of seeming altruism can be stained with selfishness.
A “mission trip” is also an opportunity to travel, hang out with friends and get away from home
“Helping the poor” is also an opportunity to feel good about ourselves, have others see us and feel superior to those we serve
“Serving the church” is also an opportunity to control what happens, protect the history of the church and keep change from happening.
One of the major issues with which many of us must wrestle as we seek to mature is moving beyond what I want – in church, with our family members and with God. This is no easy task. The pull of original sin is great but God’s grace is greater. A mature life is an examined life. It requires us to take time and reflect – to ask ourselves the deeper questions. It calls us to move beyond what I want to ask the bigger question of “what does God want?” And it requires us to answer another question: “Am I willing to do what God wants even if it is not what I want?”
Perhaps if we all individually addressed these two questions more we would argue less, give more freely, speak the truth in love more often and more regularly find ourselves in the middle of God’s will for our individual and corporate lives.
  • Have a Mission Trip Come to You
Mission trips are expensive and the percentage of people in your church who can go is low. Imagine having a mission trip come to you and providing an opportunity for 100% of your people to experience the reality of life for those living in extreme poverty.
Your church can experience global poverty without leaving your parking lot!
Compassion International presents “The Compassion Experience”. Take your church on a journey into the realities of global poverty, as you walk through the homes, streets, markets, and schools of countries that Compassion serves.
In 20 minutes, visitors will step into the true story of a child growing up in the developing world, and walk with them through their journey from poverty to a life transformed through Compassion and the local church, in Jesus’ name.
Don’t miss the opportunity to bring this life-changing event to your church. Availability is limited, so let them know right away if you are interested in bringing this FREE experience to your church.
