Developing Leaders by Stan Toler WHAT IS A LEADER? 4 Core Characteristics All Leaders Share
What is leadership? My friend John C. Maxwell defines leadership as influence, and I like that definition. I also resonate with Warren Bennis and his assessment that managers do things right but leaders do the right thing.
I've gained much from both definitions.
To that, I would add that leadership could be described as a set of personal characteristics. Look at the great leaders throughout history, and you'll see that each of them exhibited these four traits.
Leaders are-
1. Faith. My personal relationship with God has given me the opportunity to serve him in over 90 countries of the world with some of his best team members. But my faith has given me more - the firm conviction that the work I do matters to God and is therefore of great importance. That gives me the ability to persevere when things are difficult. I know I can't be successful without faith.
2. Relationships. Along the way, I have been inspired and challenged by the leadership of others. They have formed my thoughts on working and relating with people, and served as my teachers. And of course, my family and friends have affirmed and encouraged me in an awesome and loving way. Most important, I have developed deep relationships with many of the people whom I've led. I know that I will not succeed as a leader unless I develop, affirm, and value the people around me.
3. Love. I love what I do! To think that a boy from the poorest town in the poorest county of West Virginia could have an international network that includes people from nearly all cultures and economic groups is humbling, and beyond anything that I could have ever dreamed. What's more, I am motivated to do my work by my love for God and others. Leadership, for me, is not about getting ahead or even begins successful. I truly want to bless the people I meet.
Those are some of the keys to my leadership. And it's an ongoing journey. I am continually learning, growing, casting vision, and launching projects that will add value to the lives of others.

Team Member in Creative Access Area Needs Healing Touch - Please Pray
Please commit to pray for one of our team members who serves in a Creative Access Area.
The member has been struggling with an ongoing eye problem, and was just recently diagnosed with a very serious complication, which required emergency surgery. Her recovery from the surgery was a success, but the underlying problem still remains. The Lord knows who they are, this was no surprise to Him. As a global family, we need to lift this precious family before the Lord for healing.

Pray for Singapore! Pray for the Singapore general elections that were held on Friday, Sept. 11, 2015.
Singapore has a parliamentary republic form of government and has consistently been rated as one of the most stable governments in the world. Pray that voters will elect officials who will continue to rule justly and maintain an environment of religious freedom. Click here to read the story on our website. Extreme Impact Work & Witness Teams Needed for Saipan- Typhoon Recovery Work!
Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands
On Sunday, August 2nd at approximately 11pm (Guam time), Typhoon Soudelor passed over Saipan, located in the Northern Mariana Islands, bringing devastating results.
Now, over one month later, the island is still working to recover. Currently there are houses to re-roof, outdoor kitchens to be rebuilt, and lots of debris that needs to be removed.
There is an urgent need for 2-4 member high-impact Work and Witness teams with strong backs, spirits, and hearts for being the tangible hands and feet of Christ to those who are hurting.

Kudjip Mission Station, Papua New Guinea
Over the past few weeks we have been reporting about how the drought in Papua New Guinea has reached a severe state.
The much-depended-upon gardens of the students at Melanesia Nazarene Bible College (MNBC) and Teacher's College (MNTC) have long-since dried up.
When the staff, students, and families at Kudjip Nazarene Mission Station heard about the need at their Bible School...only God knew what they would end up doing!
This is an incredible story of God's people answering the challenge to love their neighbors! Mission Corps Volunteer Impacts Community Through Art... Now It's Your Turn!
Manila, Philippines
Just over one year ago Enoch Tee, a Mission Corps Volunteer from Canada, arrived in the Philippines to work with the World Mission Communications Asia-Pacific Team.
Enoch has a tremendous gifting in the area of painting, drawing, graphic design as well as art education...and a huge heart for ministry! Shortly after arriving to his new assignment, he went looking for a way to engage the local community through the gifts and passions of art that God has given him.
If you're in the area...come encourage the kids!

Asia-Pacific Region
Once again a scam is circulating on the Region, specifically targeting Nazarenes.
This past week, emails have been received where the sender identifies themselves as one of our global leaders, who has run into trouble while visiting a country on the Region.
The "leader" asks for your immediate financial assistance, even in some cases referencing details that would normally only be known to those in the church family. This adds false credibility to their request. Be informed! Follow this link to know more and how you can protect yourself. Philippine Team Member's Battle With Cancer Continues - Please Keep Praying!
Manila, Philippines
Liza visits her office at APNTS for a time of prayer.
The other day, I heard my 14 year old son crying. I asked him why. He embraced me and burst in tears and told me he is asking why God gave me this cancer and that he is asking God to transfer my cancer to him.
Thank God for giving me enough strength to hold back my tears and giving me the right words to tell my son to trust God every moment of his life because God is in control and God knows what's better for us. I told my son how people are praying for us and helping us with my medication. After hours of conversation about trusting God, living a life that pleases God, why we should read the Bible regularly and praying regularly, my son looks happy again.
You see, your prayers are powerful. Your act of kindness is powerful. Children learn by what they see. My son is learning to trust God because he can see that God is working through you.
From a mother's heart, thank you. Thank you for praying and for giving us financial support. May God return what you have given. Click here for more updates and how you can continue to pray. BGS Encourages Participation in Thank Offering 2015

To Nazarenes
around the world:
"Developing the Future" is the theme of the 2015 Thanksgiving, or Thank Offering. As we remember the Lord's unfailing love, the psalmist calls on us to "sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy" (Psalm 107:22). We join you in prayer and preparation for this annual emphasis in the Church of the Nazarene. Through this offering given to the World Evangelism Fund, we do more together than we ever could alone..
