In honor of World Mental Health Day from Dr. Giuseppe Raviola, Partners In Health in Boston, Massachusetts, United States for Saturday, 10 October 2015
Genocide. Earthquakes. Ebola. These are not fleeting disasters. They traumatize the people we serve and leave deep emotional wounds.
And yet mental health services are deplorably scarce in poor countries around the world. Millions of people suffer for lack of care.
My name is Dr. Giuseppe (Bepi) Raviola, and for the past six years I've worked with PIH to reach some of the world's poorest people with the mental health care they need—whether a young adult who strives to manage an illness or a victim of unspeakable tragedy.
I'm writing in honor of World Mental Health Day—today—set aside by the World Health Organization to help preserve the dignity of those grappling with mental health-related problems. And to advocate high-quality health care for all those who suffer.
Every day, Partners In Health works toward this goal.
In West Africa, where Ebola has left countless people grieving, shell-shocked, and unable to care for their families.
In Peru, where patients with chronic mental illness find support in community-based group homes.
In Haiti, where doctors, nurses, and community health workers provide care for everything from depression and epilepsy to bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
In the coming year, with your support, we will expand and strengthen the integration of mental health care in the 10 countries we serve—wherever people face mental health-related problems but go without care.
Will you make a special gift today, in honor of World Mental Health Day, to support this vision?
Because, it's just this simple: People who suffer mental health-related problems needsupport and care. If they live in New York City, if they live in Cange, Haiti, if they live in Burera, Rwanda.
As we work toward this vision of care for all, I'm so pleased to have you by our side.
Bepi
