Celebrate pastors during Clergy Appreciation Month
October is Clergy Appreciation Month. Gather a Sunday school class, home group, or engage the entire congregation to say "thank you" with these ideas:Read more
Think for a moment of all the clergy who have impacted your faith journey through the years. October is the time to say "Thank you!" So, gather a Sunday school class, inspire your home group, or engage the entire congregation in a creative, intentional effort to express your appreciation to the clergy serving you now.
Here are some ideas:
  • Organize a prayer calendar so that each pastor is prayed for every day over the next 30 days.
  • Write notes of appreciation to your clergy.
  • Invite children to create artwork for the pastors.
  • Recognize your clergy through a special presentation or fun event.
  • Give clergy families a night out to a local restaurant or gift certificate for an overnight get-away.
  • Make each Sunday a special emphasis of recognizing something specifically appreciated about each of your congregation’s pastoral leaders (personality qualities, gifting, family, etc.) with a special tribute, recollection, etc. Consider giving a gift that relates to the emphasis.
  • Organize an opportunity for members of the congregation to volunteer time serving pastoral leaders by babysitting or helping with yard projects and other home maintenance.
On behalf of the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center, thank you to pastors and all clergy for their labor and leadership in helping to make Christlike disciples in the nations.

The Asia-Pacific Region posted the following prayer request for the daughters of a family serving on the region: Read more
The Asia-Pacific Region posted the following prayer request:
Please pray for the two daughters of a family serving in a Creative Access Area* who suffered broken bones and scrapes after being hit by a car on Friday afternoon while on their way home from school.
Both girls have significant injuries, but the parents are very thankful as it could have been much worse.
The family is surrounded by local friends and the parents report that the girls are receiving good medical care.
Please take a moment to pray and then share this request across your church prayer lines, with families and friends. We daily see the incredible power of prayer.
Please commit to stand in the gap for these two girls and this precious family!
Updates on their condition will be posted as they are available on the Asia-Pacific Prayer Page.[Church of the Nazarene Asia-Pacific Region]

Armenian Nazarenes assist refugees
The Church of the Nazarene in Yerevan, Armenia, is establishing relationships with Syrian families who have fled to Armenia. Read more
Refugees travel along train tracks in Hungary (Teanna Sunberg photo).
According to the United Nations Refugee Agency, 17,000 Syrians — primarily of ethnic Armenian background — have found refuge in Armenia since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2010.
Leaving their belongings, houses, shops, factories, and extended family members, they have come to Armenia, hoping to provide a safe environment for their children and families. All of them have to start from zero. Their experiences are very different from the Armenian context. They have challenges and difficulties finding jobs, starting small businesses, paying for rent and daily expenses, and adapting to the new life in all its aspects.
For most of them, the unknown is a paralyzing factor for their daily life. They don’t know what has happened to their houses and shops. Others don’t know how long they will have to stay in Armenia, and to deal with unemployment and lack of resources.
The government of the Republic of Armenia has been trying to support many of the families by providing Armenian passports to those with an Armenian background. Nongovernment organizations, independently or in partnership with the United Nations Armenia, have been initiating some short-term relief assistance programs and micro business loans. However, daily details and challenges that many of those families face are usually unattended.
The Church of the Nazarene in Yerevan, Armenia, has been establishing relationships with Syrian families, and many needs have started to be uncovered in the process.
One family of four — a mother and her 12- and 6-year-old sons and 9-year-old daughter — arrived in Armenia in May 2014. The father and the grandfather had been kidnaped and killed by a militant group, and the mother had been receiving threatening calls from the group. Armenia became their only haven.
Arriving in the new land was not easy. The mother has to deal with the growing needs of the three children, for whom life has become a big question mark. They have to deal with loss, anger, fear, frustration, and questions that so many times remain unanswered.
After coming to a church service, the family started to develop relationships with the church members. The identified needs are vast, and the church has started to initiate support by tackling different need areas.
Home visits and food items are being provided according to need. The mother is being encouraged to follow cake baking and decorating classes to start a small business. The church is planning to assist her in equipping her kitchen for that home business.
One of the church members, also a Syrian, is teaching her how to make waxing for goldsmith production so that she can have some pocket money through this skill.
The young son is attending karate classes in his school for free. The older one wanted to attend, too, but because of lack of resources, the mother did not give him her consent. Finding this activity a way for the boy to release and learn to control his anger and negative emotions, the church decided to fund this activity and let the older boy attend the karate classes, too.
The church has also taken into account the possible need for professional psychological support in the near future.
The congregation assists individuals and families by networking and referring them to services they need, finding apartments for rent, looking for employment and orienting them in business development issues. The church would like to also provide more services for the families, such as providing school support sessions for the children who have a hard time adapting to the Eastern Armenian dialect and Russian language in the school.
The church is also trying to have funds to support a number of families in attending skills development classes and starting home businesses. Along the process, the church is looking forward to further enroll the parents and children in the church life and bring them to a relationship with the church and a growing relationship with Christ, which will be their ultimate anchor that will sustain them in their new life and its challenges and difficulties.[Church of the Nazarene Eurasia Region]

Much of South Carolina remains under water after days of torrential rainfall killed at least 15 people in the state and caused more than $1 billion worth of damage.
South Carolina District Superintendent Eddie Estep reported several Nazarenes and churches were affected. Most Nazarene pastors cancelled services October 4 due to the weather and impassable roads.
"[Sunday] I spoke directly with many of our pastors, all of whom were safe and sound," Estep said.
Several churches sustained flooding in the lower levels and had roof leaks. Some pastors' homes also sustained moderate damage, and at least two pastors were stranded in their homes as of Monday due to impassable roads. At least one church, Columbia Abundant Life Fellowship Church of the Nazarene, had several inches of water throughout the building. The homes of some Nazarene members were flooded, and many families remained without electricity as of Wednesday.
Some district-owned buildings at the D. Moody Gunter Camp & Retreat Center sustained moderate water damage. One private cottage sustained significant damage due to a fallen tree.
"As bad as the storm has been, we are grateful that it was not worse," Estep said. "We will pray for safety and provision as the cleanup begins."
Hundreds of Crisis Care Kits were delivered to Sumpter, where the First Church of the Nazarene hosted a day of prayer Wednesday.
Prayer is requested for those affected and those providing assistance. More information will be added as it is made available.

BGS encourages participation in Thank Offering 2015
Sixteen people join the Church of the Nazarene every hour. The 2015 Thanksgiving, or Thank, Offering celebrates how our gifts help spread the gospel, both now and in the future. Read more
To Nazarenes around the world:
“Developing the Future” is the theme of the 2015 Thanksgiving, or Thank, Offering. As we remember the Lord’s unfailing love, the psalmist calls on us to “sacrifice thank offerings and tell of his works with songs of joy” (Psalm 107:22). We join you in prayer and preparation for this annual emphasis in the Church of the Nazarene. Through this offering given to the World Evangelism Fund, we do more together than we ever could alone. God receives our humble gifts and uses our generosity to accomplish amazing things — in language schools, church plants, mission hospitals, and many other ministries. Every time we choose to serve God by giving back, we become a part of God’s future — a future that spreads into eternity as people around the world come to a saving knowledge of Christ. The 2015 offering celebrates how our gifts help spread the gospel, both now and in the future.
In Psalm 22, the writer praises God and calls on all people to worship the Lord. He declares that the greatness of God will be obvious because of what God will do. Through the World Evangelism Fund, the Church of the Nazarene is able to share His greatness and goodness with people everywhere. Praise God for how He has used our gifts in the last year:
  • 702 missionaries and 310 missionary kids were deployed from 35 world areas.
  • 378 people joined the Church of the Nazarene every day. That is 16 people per hour!
  • 143,870 students were enrolled in Nazarene preschool, primary, and secondary schools.
As you prepare for this important offering, remember these verses from Psalm 22:
Let the rich of the earth feast and worship.
Bow before him, all who are mortal,
all whose lives will end as dust.
Our children will also serve him.
Future generations will hear about the wonders of the Lord.
His righteous acts will be told to those not yet born.
They will hear about everything he has done.[Psalm 22:29–31 (NLT)]
Let’s reflect on the many ways in which God has blessed us, and imagine what God will do through our generation and those that follow as we continue to serve Him.
The offering will be received on 11 October 2015 in Canada and 22 November 2015 globally. (Please note that not all areas will receive the offering on these dates, depending on the calendar of each field or district.)
Resources will be available at nazarene.org/generosity in English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Korean. If you have questions, contact Stewardship Ministries at 1-800-544-8413 or stewardship@nazarene.org.
Yours in Christ,[The Board of General Superintendents]

Flags of the Nations: Cuba
Each week, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center proudly flies a flag of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Cuba
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Cuba in 1902.
Cuba had a population of 11,047,251 in 2014. That same year, Cuba reported 90 Churches of the Nazarene, all of which have been officially organized. Cuba has 8,749 total members.
Located on the Mesoamerica Region, Cuba has one Phase 3 district and one Phase 2 district. For more information about the Mesoamerica Region, visit mesoamericaregion.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.

For the second consecutive year, Trevecca Nazarene University has broken its all-time enrollment record in traditional undergraduate students. After the first week of classes, the university recorded an enrollment of 1,245, marking the first time numbers have topped 1,200 in university history.
Last fall, Trevecca broke a 113-year all-time enrollment record with 1,115 traditional undergraduate students. This year’s numbers reflect a 12 percent increase over that record-breaking enrollment. In addition, the fall enrollment number marks a 25 percent increase in traditional undergraduate students over the past five years.
A large incoming freshmen class and increased number of transfer students, as well as a high retention rate of current students, all played a part.

PRAISES
JESUS Film - Cuba
"I have suffered because of my husband," said Isabel in Cuba. "We have been married for 24 years. Though he is a doctor, he is also an alcoholic and it has affected our marriage. We have a dysfunctional home and live with my mother-in-law, who runs a spiritist center in our area. My older son is serving a legal sanction due to the negative influences. All this weighs heavily on me. My sister is always telling me about God, His love and His power to transform my life and my family. The day I saw the JESUS Film, I understood He is the true way. I hope my faith will increase. Now I am happy and learning more about the Living God and His power!"
JESUS Film - Panama
"I was in anguish," said an elderly woman in Panama. "I live alone with my adult son who has special needs. I felt very alone and was afraid everything would turn out badly. I worry a lot for my son because I am getting old. After talking to the JESUS Film team member, I was encouraged and feel hope in Jesus. I give my home to God so it can be a new preaching point for sharing about Jesus. I give everything to God."
JESUS Film - Sri Lanka
"As I saw these people for the first time, my heart sank," said a team leader in Sri Lanka. "The people in this area live a deprived life. Disease and illness are common here — it broke my heart to see them. At first, we were unable to get permission from the village headman to show the JESUS film, but after praying about it, God made it possible. Permission was granted due to the influence of the headman's friends and family, and doors were opened. I am praying constantly that God will bless them abundantly. They are now friends and help us with the JESUS film showings."
PRAYER REQUESTS
Cholera outbreak
A Cholera outbreak in the Kindu area of the Democratic Republic of Congo has taken the lives of at least 50 people. Five of these deaths are in the Nazarene family — two young mothers with their babies and a young man who is survived by his wife and two children.
HEALTH-RELATED REQUESTS
Marion Rich
Former missionary Marion Rich continues to improve beyond doctor’s expectations after a car accident last week. She remains on a respirator and — due to her age — they have decided not to operate on the numerous rib fractures. She also has two fractures in the spine that do not require anything but immobility for the time being. Marion and her husband, Harry, served in Haiti and Rwanda. She is also the mother of missionary Dwight Rich, who currently serves in Ecuador.
