#CTTalks launched to help prep
for General Conference
The Connectional Table is launching a series of weekly videos in October to help inform United Methodist church leaders and General Conference delegates leading up to the 2016 General Conference next May. The videos are part of an online forum called #CTTalks.
“#CTTalks is intended to provide a way of engaging information about General Conference, rather than simply reading it,” said the Rev. Dr. Amy Valdez Barker, executive secretary of The Connectional Table. “Our goal is to invite people to engage in the conversation before we get to Portland.”
The #CTTalks forum is designed to be used by delegations and annual conferences as they study and discuss issues that will be addressed at General Conference 2016. These weekly posts will include interviews with United Methodist bishops, Connectional Table members and other leaders from across the denomination.
Each video will also be accompanied by a one-page conversation sheet with FAQs on the topic, as well as questions for delegates to use to continue the dialogue. The videos and the conversation sheets will be available on the Connectional Table website.
Delegates are invited to ask questions of the interviewees in advance via Twitter using the hashtag #CTTalks. Individual delegates and entire delegations can use the resource to help prepare for General Conference.
“We want to start building a culture of Christian conferencing among delegations and church leaders as we prepare for the important work General Conference does in discerning ‘what to teach’ across our connection,” said Valdez Barker.
The following is the proposed schedule for #CTTalks topics:
October 2015: General Conference Culture for 2016
November 2015: Christian Conferencing
December 2015: Vital Congregations - Paragraph 120
January 2016: Worldwide Nature - Our Theology
February 2016: Worldwide Nature - Our Organization/Structure
April 2016: Stronger Together: VC-Four Strategic Directions for 2017-2020
May 6: Welcome to Portland
General Conference is scheduled for May 10-20, 2016, in Portland, Oregon.

Nebraska Archives receives donations
Can you help identify the donor?
The Nebraska United Methodist Historical Center/Archives discovered donations on Sept. 16 that were left under the door while the archives were closed. The donated items include:
75th Anniversary booklet for Zion Evangelical UB Church
25th Anniversary booklet for St. Paul UMC
A poster board of clergy of the Nebraska Conference of the Evangelical Association.
The archive center currently has no way to acknowledge the donation without getting the donor information. Identifying the owner also assists with the question of legally owning the items if the archivist can complete the donation paperwork.
If you donated the items, or know you might have, please contact Karrie Dvorak, director/curator, at 402-465-2175 or via email atkdvorak@greatplainsumc.org.

East Heights UMC Preschool wins national certification
East Heights United Methodist Church Preschool, 4407 E. Douglas Ave., in Wichita, Kansas, has earned national certification as a Nature Explore Classroom from Dimensions Educational Research Foundation and the Arbor Day Foundation.
East Heights UMC Preschool joins a growing network of organizations and institutions that have created effective nature-based outdoor learning environments for children. This network allows for idea-sharing, peer support and continuous development. Learn more about the preschool.
“East Heights UMC Preschool has shown tremendous leadership in growing the next generation of environmental stewards,” said Susie Wirth, Nature Explore Outreach Director. “Their commitment to providing research-based and nature-rich learning offers a wonderful example to educators throughout the country.”
Nature Explore Classrooms are part of the Nature Explore program, a collaborative project of the Arbor Day Foundation and Dimensions Educational Research Foundation developed in response to the growing disconnect between children and nature. Certified Nature Explore Classrooms help fill the void by integrating research-based outdoor learning opportunities into children’s daily lives.
The classrooms, which are being developed across the country, offer interactive elements such as musical instruments made of natural materials, garden or pathway areas and natural materials for building and creating art. Children who learn and grow in Certified Nature Explore Classrooms enhance concentration, develop creativity and problem-solving, relieve stress and improve skills in many areas of development.
The first Nature Explore Classroom is located in the Tree Adventure attraction at Arbor Day Farm, the Arbor Day Foundation’s interactive conservation venue in Nebraska City, Nebraska. Learn more about the program.

Wesleyan Building Brothers receives endorsement
Wesleyan Building Brothers (WBB) (a UMMen mission) has been accepted as one of nine ministries endorsed by the General Commission on United Methodist Men.
The endorsement by the commission is the result of the cooperative efforts of George Houle, Dan Schaffer, author of “Spiritual Fathers” and Larry Malone, a former staff member of the commission.
“As the commission encouraged churches and United Methodist Men to come together in class meetings, the Wesleyan Building Brothers process can be that next step and provide a core of spiritually mature men who can lead small groups,” said Houle.
United Methodist Men is the largest organized men’s ministry in the United States.
The WBB program is active in the Great Plains and Virginia conferences; there are also groups of United Methodist Men experiencing the process through ZOOM. Cuban church leaders are presently considering the ministry.
If you would like more information on Wesleyan Building Brothers, or the Great Plains UMMen, contact George Houle at 316 573 8359 orummwbb@att.net.
New 5-week study explores
'God of the Bible'
The General Commission on the Status and Role of Women (GCSRW) released its free, downloadable five-week study, “God of the Bible,” in early September. “God of the Bible” explores the various images of God throughout Scripture including Wisdom, mystery, creation and parent.
“As a child, one of my favorite pastors referred to God as “father and mother of us all.” Those words touched me with images of safety, warmth, security, and most of all, love,” said Dawn Hare, General Secretary of GCSRW. “Tragically, not all children know the love of a father and mother. In many cases, such references to God can evoke much darker emotions and images. Blessedly, our Bible is full of many references and metaphors to explain the nature and love of God that are not limiting, but as we like to call are the use of ‘expansive language.’”
“The Justice for Women committee was concerned that while there had been a good amount of quality scholarly work done on the topic of Biblical metaphor and language for God, but this work had not resulted in an abundance of study materials for the local church,” said the Rev. Stephanie Ahlschwede, pastor at South Gate UMC in Lincoln, Nebraska. “God of the Bible forms a bridge between the best of contemporary scholarship and the local church by presenting the materials in a study format appropriate for many settings. It was important to the committee that GCSRW make this study available via free download on the Commission's website to guarantee the broadest possible access to both the Leader and Participant guides.”
Additional resources for God of the Bible such as sermon ideas and reading lists will be available later in October.
