Weekly eNote from Pastor Scott Chrostek from The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection Downtown of Kansas City, Missouri, United States for Friday, 30 September 2016
Greetings RezDowntowners,
What an amazing week it has been in KC. Not only has the weather been amazing, but this has been an exhilarating week in ministry and this weekend is shaping up to be the same. Starting Wednesday we have been participating in and helping to host Leadership Institute. Over 1800 church leaders from across the country gathered together in KC to grow, be inspired and share ideas for reviving the church, their ministries and the communities in which they sit. It is such a privilege to be a part of this big event. For our staff it gives us a chance to remember the story of how God started Resurrection Downtown. We remembered our purpose, to build Christian community where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed Christians. We focused in on the importance of meeting people where they are and inviting people to join us always. We reflected over the critical need for ongoing missions engagement or the importance of reaching out into the community through missions and service. And we were reminded of our task to continually find new ways to make worship engaging, relevant and hospitable to people who don’t yet know God. On Wednesday night, our very own Glory Revival had the privilege of hosting a worship night for over 300 participants at our downtown campus and the staff team lead several sessions on Transforming the Heart of the City!
Given all that has happened, I must admit, it has all been a reason to give thanks to God for each of you. I am thankful that you responded to God’s call to be a part of this movement in the middle of the city! I can’t wait to see where God will take us into the future.
This weekend in worship, I am excited to share that we will be hearing from Bishop Will Willimon. Bishop Willimon has written over 60 books, he is a tremendous preacher and a friend of mine from Duke Chapel. Before becoming Bishop in the United Methodist Church, Will was the Dean of Duke University Chapel. I am thrilled for you to have the opportunity to hear him preach this weekend. You won’t want to miss this weekend’s message!
In the meantime, below you’ll find a list of upcoming activities including tomorrow’s conversation on race! I hope you’ll find a way to connect to our community over the coming weeks…
Continuing the conversation on race! Join neighbors, friends, and other Kansas City community members this weekend for a remarkable ‘conversation’ experience with Rev. Dr. F. Willis Johnson, pastor of Wellspring Church in Ferguson, MO. On Saturday, October 1 from 8:30am to Noon at 1522 McGee in the Sanctuary, Resurrection Downtown and Centennial UMC will be spending the morning exploring and sharing our own stories, fears, and realizations about race. Together we’ll learn what it means to ‘be an EMT’ and to hold up your corner. It’ll be a challenging and inspiring morning, and your life will almost certainly expand in some way! Bring a friend or colleague, and experience Holding Up Your Corner: Guided Conversations on Race. For more information or to register, visit cor.org/downtown/conversationsonrace.
Annual Volunteer Night of Celebration - Are you a current volunteer at Rez Downtown or are you willing to be? Then we want to celebrate YOU! Please join us on Thursday, October 13 at 6:30pm at 1522 McGee for an evening of celebrating all our volunteers who serve within the walls of RezDT. Come hear a short message from Pastor Scott, enjoy some treats, build community and have some fun! Everyone will receive a FREE t-shirt at the event if you register at cor.org/downtown/volunteercelebration. For questions, contactshannon.endicott@gmail.com
It’s right around the corner. Join us for our 3RD GRADE BIBLE PRESENTATION
Sunday, October 16 | 10:45 am
Come support the Methodist tradition of presenting all 3rd grade students with a Bible of their very own. As members of their faith family, Resurrection will provide this age-appropriate Bible and a prayer that this gift will help them take the next steps in their relationship with God. This is a faith milestone and a great opportunity to communicate to our children the importance of God’s Word in their lives. If you have a 3rd grader and would like them to receive a signed, personal Bible from Pastor Scott, you must register your child below using the link here or by emailing Sarah.Brischle@cor.org – even if you are unable to attend onOctober 16.
Are You in the Process of Caring for Aging Parents? Come join others also in this process for a 4-week study based on the book Voices of Aging by Missy Buchanan. This class begins on Tuesday, October 4, 6:30 – 8:00pm at the 1522 McGee location. Have conversations about the joys and challenges of our parent or parents through their aging years. Biblical Womanhood…Really? For many women, what the Bible says about being a woman is outdated and antiquated. Rather than simply disregard what the Bible says, take this 3-week journey on Wednesdays beginning October 5 at 7 pm with Pastor Anne as she leads this thoughtful study written by Rachel Held Evans who invites us to see a different way. Her passion for both keen Biblical interpretation and her commitment to being a faithful woman help redeem the Bible’s importance for women today. Come ready to think deeply and share about life together. Some advanced reading is required. The book A Year of Biblical Womanhood: How a Liberated Woman Found Herself Sitting on Her Roof, Covering Her Head, and Calling Her Husband 'Master' may be purchased on line. Scholarships are available. Class size is limited. To register, go to cor.org/downtown/classes.
Women’s Breakfast Series – Join us on October 8 at 9 am at 1522 McGee as we gather for a time of fun, food and fellowship and hear from Consuelo Ross, Founder and CEO of Surviving the Odds, Inc. as she speaks about “Faith and Cancer: The Legacy of Darrell Sublett.” Bring a breakfast dish to share, or just come and join us – we always have plenty to eat! For more information, visit cor.org/downtown/womensbreakfast or contact Pam at pamelacurry@me.com or Bobbie at bobbielcrew@outlook.com.
Meals Ministry - If you have a heart for serving friends who are grieving, adjusting to life with a new baby, or recovering from surgery, consider joining the meals ministry. We cook meals and deliver them to homes for short-term needs as a way of sharing the light of Christ when life is hard. Please contact Lindsay (McCoy) Lentz lklentz320@gmail.com for more information.
Nominations for Resurrection Committees – Resurrection is seeking candidates to serve beginning in 2017 for these committees: Finance, Trustees, Staff Parish Relations, Foundation, Nominations and Lay Delegates to Annual Conference.
