This Week in Caregiving: December 10-16 from National Alliance for Caregiving of Bethesda, Maryland, United States for Friday, 16 December 2016 "This Week in Caregiving from the National Alliance for Caregiving"
Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:

Kaiser Family Foundation | December 13, 2016
"The 2010 Affordable Care Act (ACA) included many provisions affecting the Medicare program and the 57 million seniors and people with disabilities who rely on Medicare for their health insurance coverage. The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) has estimated that full repeal of the ACA would increase Medicare spending by $802 billion from 2016 to 2025.The increase in Medicare spending would likely lead to higher Medicare premiums, deductibles, and cost sharing for beneficiaries, and accelerate the insolvency of the Medicare Part A trust fund."
Huffington Post | December 13, 2016
"In the United States, there are at least 1.4 million children and 5.5 million young adults who provide unpaid care to family members with disabilities, mental illnesses, injuries sustained through military service, and substance abuse issues. Here's what you need to know about their lives during the holiday season."
NPR | December 12, 2016
"About 44 million Americans are unpaid family caregivers - sometimes for a child with special needs, more often for a frail older adult, according to a 2015 estimate from the National Alliance for Caregiving. Thirty-three states have adopted legislation requiring medical centers to give caregivers basic training or insturction when a patient heads home from the hospital, though how this carried out is largely up to the hospital."
Politifact | December 14, 2016
"A newly introduced bill to overhaul Social Security has prompted a wave of urgent appeals to current and future Social Security beneficiaries to prevent the program from being gutted. A 50 percent monthly benefit cut starting "immediately" would indeed be a serious problem for a lot of Social Security beneficiaries. However, the primary article the post linked to doesn't support the headline, and a related article on provides weak support."

Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:

PBS Newshour | December 8, 2016
"Key senior groups say they will be on high alert for anything that reduces health benefits to older Americans or raises the cost of health care. The ACA provided substantial Medicare supports, including new free preventive health services and the phased reduction of drug prices in Part D prescription plans."
The Washington Post | December 6, 2016
"The bill, which would apply to both full- and part-time workers, also grants employees six weeks of paid leave to help ailing relatives and two weeks of personal sick leave per year, placing the District at the forefront of jurisdictions with family-friendly workplace laws, but alarming employers who say the nation's capital is becoming an increasingly costly place to do business."
Aol | December 8, 2016
"A new report on mortality in the United States shows a decrease in life expectancy statistics for the first time in more than two decades. Data from the National Center for Health Statistics released on Thursday indicates life expectancy at birth for the total U.S. population in 2015 was 78.8 years - a 0.1 year decrease from 2014's 78.9 years."
The Independent | December 8, 2016
"A city in Japan has begun tagging people who have dementia with QR codes that can be scanned by authorities if they get lost. If an elderly person becomes disoriented, police will find the local city hall, its telephone number, and the wearer's ID all embedded in the QR code."

Here are the highlights from this week's news in family caregiving:

Next Avenue | December 1, 2016
"The rising numbers of 'elder orphans' - seniors with no relatives to help them deal with physical and mental health challenges - prompted the American Geriatrics Society last week to unveil guidelines for a segment of these older adults who can no longer make their own medical decisions and have no designated surrogates. The nonprofit dubbed them 'unbefriended' and called for a national effort to help prevent a surge among incapacitated seniors who don't have a decision-maker and face a health crisis."
ScienceBlog | November 29, 2016
"Women's long-term participation in the workforce faces a threat from the growing need for elder care. As longevity increases, the need for elder care is growing and the lion's share of that burden falls to women. And to give such care, many are forced to cut back on working or leave the workforce entirely."
KSUT Public Radio | December 1, 2016
"On this week's KSUT Sunday Special, a closer look at the challenges faced by family caregivers for people with dementia."
