Dear Friends,
I'm excited because the Jewish New Year begins tonight.
It is the holiday of Rosh Hashanah, a Hebrew phrase meaning, "Head of the Year." We will hear the sound of the shofar, the ram's horn, awakening us to the beauty and wonder and truth of God's creation.
I did a live video yesterday about the upcoming Jewish holidays. If you'd like to be notified when I go live for a video teaching, click here and you'll be the first to know!
Here's a little story to help us appreciate the lesson of this Jewish New Year.
"Once upon a time, a rabbi was walking with a soap maker. The soap maker asked him: "Why is that we pray and study the Bible, as people have done for thousands of years, and still the world is filled with violence and lies? Does faith really work?"
The rabbi replied, "Well, let me ask you a question. Soap has been around for thousands of years, and yet, we still see people who are unwashed and unclean. Why hasn't soap made the world perfectly clean?"
The soapmaker replied, "Well, of course, soap is no good unless you use it!"
"Aha," replied the Rabbi. "So it is with God's word. Unless we use it in our daily lives—unless we believe and cherish it—it does not work."
How true! May this year be one where all of us treasure God's word and bring it into our lives. Shalom, Rabbi Evan
