Nazarene College of Nursing Participates in Prison Ministry

The Nazarene College of Nursing in Papua New Guinea participated in a ministry to inmates at a local prison. They joined in praise and worship, and were blessed by a challenging message.
Nazarene College of Nursing Participates in Prison Ministry
In June, the Nazarene College of Nursing in Papua New Guineaconducted a ministry trip to Barawaghi Prison. This trip included a time of praise and worship, followed by a sermon from Rev. Andrew Omote. The speaker gave an invitation to pray, and 18 inmates raised their hands to indicate a desire to pray. Out of these 18 inmates, eight of them were new Christians. They were then referred to Prison Ministries for further discipleship.
Rev. Omate expressed a desire to spread the Gospel to places outside of the traditional church. “It is very important to visit the prison and witness to needy souls,” he reported. “We thank the [Nazarene College of Nursing] principal and administration for their funding and the transport they provided. It is a team effort.”
Since 1972 the Church of the Nazarene has trained nurses at the Kudjip Nazarene Hospital in Papua New Guinea. Becoming known as the Nazarene College of Nursing in 2002, NCON’s mission is to train young men and women to help meet the physical, social, emotional, and spiritual needs of people who come to the college. While NCON focuses on training nurses, they view their calling to be much more holistic. They provide an international discipleship program for students, as well as numerous ministry opportunities. The prison ministry is an expression of this call to ministry.

Asia Theological Society Holds Book Signing for APNTS Professor

Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary Professor Dr. Mitchel Modine was honored to open the annual theological consultation of the Asia Theological Association, and held a book signing for his new commentary on Numbers
Asia Theological Society Holds Book Signing for APNTS Professor
Dr. Modine signing his commentary on Numbers
The Asia Theological Association (ATA) recently held its annual theological consultation in Manila. On the first night of the event, APNTS Professor of Old Testament Dr. Mitchel Modine unveiled his recently published commentary on the Book of Numbers. The book is part of a series called Asia Bible Commentary, which aims to be a pastoral, practical resource for Asian ministry leaders. Though most of the writers are Asian scholars, the series editor said Dr. Modine was chosen because of his long experience in Asia, and especially because he has married a Filipina and intentionally inserted himself into the culture.
Dr. Modine gave a short speech about his experience writing the commentary, then signed copies of the book for several of the attendees.
This is Dr. Modine’s fourth book. His previous books dealt with the books of Jeremiah and 1–2 Chronicles.. Read More.

The third verse of Charles Wesley’s hymn, “Arise, My Soul, Arise,” goes: “five bleeding wounds he bears, received on Calvary. They pour effectual prayers, they strongly plead for me.”
Five Bleeding Wounds He Bears
FIVE BLEEDING WOUNDS HE BEARS
Dr. Floyd Cunningham is the Professor of Church History at Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary. He has been serving as a missionary in the Philippines since 1983.
The pendulum swings from emphases upon the divinity to emphases upon the humanity of Christ. Many years ago, I remember Mildred Bangs Wynkoop saying in class that Nazarenes and other evangelicals overstressed the divinity of Christ and that this led us into a misshapen Christology and weak understanding of the incarnation, as well as away from a truly authentic understanding of holiness. One striking discussion at the Global Theology Conference was over the image of the still very human Christ sitting eternally at the right hand of God the Father. Diane Leclerc presented this image in her paper, “The Humility of God: The Humanity of Jesus as Wesleyan Ecclesiologic.” God fully participates in human nature, with all its weakness.
The third verse of Charles Wesley’s hymn, “Arise, My Soul, Arise,” goes: “five bleeding wounds he bears, received on Calvary. They pour effectual prayers, they strongly plead for me.” This fits Christ’s bodily ascension into heaven and points to the bodily resurrection and healing of us all. More particularly, the wounds represent the on-going humanness of Christ in heaven. God has become human eternally. God requires no reminding of human weakness. Diane[1] acknowledges that some cultures need to hear the “Christus Victor” message loudly, but that other cultures (including her own) need to more greatly appreciate the humanity and humility of God. Karl Barth, the Swiss theologian, shouted a loud “No” to the puny Christ of his own theology teachers, who minimized the objective work of the atonement, emphasized the moral influence of Jesus, and linked German nationalism to the kingdom of Christ. After 30 years of hammering away against such foolishness, in 1957 Barth saw the pendulum swing too far in the opposite direction and lectured on The Humanity of God. Christ is “the Lord humbled for communion” with human beings. Said Barth: “God’s deity does not exclude, but includes His humanity.”[2] Diane would agree.
[1] Since Diane Leclerc is my sister, I will presume to call her by her first name.
