The Upper Room Daily Devotional from Nashville, Tennessee, United States “DEPTH OF DEVOTION” for Saturday, 27 August 2016 with Scripture: Mark 1:16 As he walked beside Lake Kinneret, he saw Shim‘on and Andrew, Shim‘on’s brother, casting a net into the lake; for they were fishermen. 17 Yeshua said to them, “Come, follow me, and I will make you into fishers for men!” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
19 Going on a little farther, he saw Ya‘akov Ben-Zavdai and Yochanan, his brother, in their boat, repairing their nets. 20 Immediately he called them, and they left their father Zavdai in the boat with the hired men and went after Yeshua.
-------
At that very moment [Jesus] called them. They followed him, leaving their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers.[Mark 1:20 (CEB)]
When Jesus called his disciples, they were already settled into their vocations. From today’s reading, it appears that they had successful careers. But the call of Christ and a new way of life took precedence. Their allegiance was total, without hesitation or regret, to the cause to which Christ called them.
As Christians we can be devoted to many things. Our families, our church, our jobs, our education, our reputation, and other aspects of our lives beckon us. All of them need our attention. But as the disciples demonstrated, our devotion to Christ is our first and primary allegiance. We are called by Christ to be devoted witnesses of our faith. The disciples exemplified such devotion, and so can we.
The Author: William L. Dike (Maryland, USA)
Thought for the Day: When Christ calls, I will follow.
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to be faithful to you. Search us and call us back to you when we fall short. Strengthen us to be wholehearted in our devotion to you. Amen.
Prayer focus: NEW FOLLOWERS OF CHRIST
