Greetings RezDowntowners,
This is absolutely my favorite week of the year in downtown Kansas City. Things have been electric with the Big Twelve Tournament in town. The energy is awesome and the amount of people walking through the city has been tremendous. What a privilege. All week long our focus has been on how we might be a blessing to the people we bump into throughout Kansas City, so that they might leave downtown Kansas City having experienced God’s surprising and amazing grace. How could you bless someone today? One of the things we did was put a surprising banner on our Grand building that says, “Blessing Brackets since 2009.” This was one of the ways we thought to offer greetings to the visiting basketball fans in downtown KC with some holy humor. We’ve gotten lots of looks and lots of laughs…I’ve posted a picture below and I’d love it if you would consider sharing it broadly online with your friends on social media today or tomorrow.
As we draw nearer to Easter, we are continuing our sermon series on Witnesses by focusing on Mary and John. It will be a great weekend to focus on church as being a community or family with the widest embrace in all the world. Our hope each Lenten season is to share the message of hope and broadly as possible. To invite as many people as possible into the story of life overcoming death, light piercing darkness, and love ultimately winning it all. On Tuesday, the church staff and I toured the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts as we did a walk-through in preparation for our Easter Celebration at 9am and 11am. Our prayer is that we might fill that space up to capacity with as many members of this community as possible. My hope is that you would invite your friends, your family, your coworkers and neighbors to join us this year so together we might proclaim and remember together that the worst thing isn’t the last thing, that God’s love never fails and hope never disappoints. I am so excited for the greater things still to be done in this city!

Women’s Breakfast Series –This Saturday, March 14th at 9 am, the Loft, 1522 McGee. Come meet other women in our community, share breakfast and join us for this special presentation about the Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA), and hear from a survivor. MOCSA has continually expanded to better meet the needs of victims and our community, and now offers therapy, support and advocacy for victims of rape and sexual assault, for sexually abused children and families, for adult survivors of child sexual abuse and for others touched by sexual violence. Bring a breakfast item to share, or if you don’t have time to make or buy one, come anyway – we always have plenty! Join Arts Alive and Barclay Martin in concert on Saturday night at 7:00pm. On Saturday, March 14, at 7 pm we are hosting an Arts Alive event where you will experience a full-sensory performance titled HEMISPHERES: Sound Photographs from Madagascar by Barclay Martin and his quartet. A blend of photography, music and interactive media, HEMISPHERES takes viewers on a journey to this remote island and is a story of musicians who have never been heard outside of their neighborhoods, offering their songs to the world for the first time. Beyond the music, there are countless stories – stories of courageous and resilient people. Recorded in open fields, musicians’ homes and unfinished buildings, this project is the intersection of the raw, beautiful music from the Unbound Madagascar community and the realities of daily life there. We will finish the night with Barclay Martin Quartet performing folksongs and ballads that Mr. Martin has written as he’s roamed the world and explored foreign cultures over the last ten years. CD’s will be available for purchase.
Lenten Journey Through the Holy Land with Pastor Scott resumes this Wednesday at 7:00pm at 1508 Grand Sanctuary. It’s not too late to join in as we prepare our hearts and minds for the true meaning of Easter. Pastor Scott leads this study retracing the life, death and resurrection of Christ. FaithWork: Easter Edition on Saturday, March 21st from 9am to Noon. Celebrate the Risen Christ by serving our community! Just show up at the church at 1522 McGee on Saturday, March 21 at 9 am, wearing clothes that can get dirty, and we will send you out to serve in the community until lunch time. We will be throwing Easter parties for children at Rose Brooks and New House shelters for women and children who are domestic violence victims. Rumor has it, that the Easter bunny will even be there! Kids will put together gifts and deliver them to those in need. You will also have an opportunity to knit for missional purposes. It will be a huge day and you will want to be a part of it! BBQ Club Pastor Todd is curious to know which BBQ place is the best in Kansas City. Each month he plans to try a new one on the third Saturday of the month. For March, the BBQ Club will be trying out Slaps BBQ, 553 Central Ave, Kansas City, Kansas. Slaps opened last summer and is the new kid on the block, so we are going to check them out! Citywide Easter Egg Hunt at Liberty Memorial– Saturday, March 28th from 11 am – 1 pm. Invite friends and join us for this year’s Citywide Easter Egge Hunt at Liberty Memorial, featuring petting zoo animals, cookie decorating, bounce house, bubbles, crafts and a special visit from the Easter Bunny! An optional Hot Dog Bash lunch (hot dog, chips, baked beans, drink) will be provided by Chris Cakes for $6/person. I am so blessed to be a part of this community and I am so proud to serve Christ with you in this city. I am excited to spend another season of Lent with you as together we hope for the Resurrection and the Life found at Easter.
