with Dr. Scott Daniels - “Please LORD, Go with Us” - Exodus 32:1-14; 33:1-3, 15-19; 34:6-8
How Will God Be Present (32:1-6)
  • The narratives of Aaron and the building of the golden calf come immediately after lengthy descriptions of how God would be uniquely present among his people through the tabernacle. God’s presence would be known through the tabernacle and the priests, but God’s presence could not be controlled or manipulated.
  • At several key points the golden calf contrasts with the tabernacle that God has just announced:
  • The people seek to create what God has already provided.
  • The people – rather than God – take the initiative.
  • Offerings are demanded rather than willingly presented.
  • The painstaking length of time required for preparing the tabernacle is replaced by an overnight rush job.
  • The mysterious presence of God is traded for an easily accessible object.
  • The uncontrollable is exchanged for that which can be manipulated.
  • The personal presence of God is given over to the impersonal idol.
  • Moses Intercedes (32:7-14)
  • Immediately the narrative changes. The people are no longer God’s people. And he is not the one who brought them out of Egypt. They are now Moses’ people and he is their deliverer.
  • God treats the relationship with the people with freedom and integrity. If they want to go their own way and create their own existence, he will let them.
  • Moses intercedes with God and invites the divine presence to deal with the people in ways consistent with what he knows to be God’s nature.
You Can Go without Me (33:1-3; 15-19)
  • God – in his faithfulness – keeps his promises to Israel. They can enter into the land, but he will not go with them. If they want life on their own, he will give them that.
  • Then whatever they might do in the land would not be called apostasy. If, however, God were to dwell among them as his chosen people, then they would have to live as his unique people or live under the threat of punishment.
  • Moses pleads with God to go with them. If the divine presence does not accompany the people into the land, then all purposefulness of the people will be lost. The Great Revelation of God’s Character (34:6-8)
  • The cry of the heart for Moses is to know God and to see his glory (kabod Yahweh).
  • When the glory of God is revealed to Moses, he discovers that at the center of God’s character he is full of steadfast love and mercy. He is always ready to relent from punishing.
  • This revelation (theophany) is the centerpiece of Israel’s understanding of God. He is a God of mercy who is forming a people who reflect that love and mercy.
A Letter from the Board of Directors
Dear PazNaz family,
Today marks the end of Pastor Scott Daniels’ ministry at PazNaz as the senior pastor. The church comes together today to celebrate and thank God for the past nine years of service, Scott’s teaching, and leadership. What remains and has not changed is who PazNaz has become and specifically the foundation provided by the exceptional pastoral staff and the on-going ministries and programs. The Board of Directors is eager to join God as he reveals his wonderful new plan for PazNaz in the days ahead.
The Board wanted to take this moment and share with you that the process for the pastoral search is already in motion. The pastoral search is conducted under the guidance of the Los Angeles District Superintendent. The Board has already met twice, including once with the District Superintendent. Dr. Kevin Mannoia will be the preaching pastor starting mid-August and the pulpit will be filled with PazNaz’s own Dr. Brad Strawn, members of the pastoral staff, and guest speakers for the weeks until then. A Pastoral Search Committee has been formed and in the coming weeks they will share more details on the framework, process, and timeline.
Please feel free to email the Board at churchboard@paznaz.org with any questions, concerns, or candidates for consideration.
In his service,
Your Church Board of Directors
