Refugees from Burundi from Dr. Alex Coutinho, Partners In Health in Boston, Massachusetts, United States for Wednesday, 28 October 2015
Political tension gave way to violence in Burundi last spring—and now, countless families are fleeing to Rwanda in search of safety.
More than 40,000 refugees now live in temporary camps in Rwanda's Kirehe District—including mothers with high-risk pregnancies, children with severe malnutrition, and others who need the PIH-supported hospital here.
I believe this vulnerable community deserves the best medical care we can give them. But this is an unforeseen strain on Kirehe District Hospital. And we need your help to treat every person who needs this crucial facility.
Will you consider a gift of $15 to supply this community of refugees with high-level health care?
I've been the Executive Director of Inshuti Mu Buzima, PIH's sister organization in Rwanda, for only seven weeks, and it is a tremendous honor to guide this lifesaving work alongside Rwanda's Ministry of Health and local leaders.
But in just that time, refugees from neighboring Burundi have caused the population of Kirehe District to spike. And the hospital is bursting at the seams.
The government is doing the best it can to solve this problem. But every day I see more expectant mothers in need of urgent care, more babies in need of neonatal medicine, more people with injuries, and more people with diseases.
Your support would improve the hospital's maternity unit. It would provide more treatment for premature babies. It would bring more care to more people in need.
Please consider an urgent gift now.
