Developing Leaders by Stan Toler
How to Thank Your Team
The Incredible Power of Giving to Others
Kim Hawk valued others over herself in tangible ways. When she turned 16 and her parents, Dean and Mary Hawk, gave her a birthday party at a local restaurant, more than 100 people came to honor her. Even though the invitation said not to bring presents, many brought gifts anyway.
Kimmy's reaction to the presents was interesting, and a great lesson for leaders. She was sad that she was the only one who got to take something home from the party. From that time forward, whenever there was a party for her, she insisted on going to a discount store to buy something for each person who would be there; she didn't want them to leave empty-handed.
Genuine concern for others is the cornerstone of great leadership.
As we celebrate a national day of Thanksgiving, here are some thank you gifts you can give to your team. They won't cost you much, but they'll make a huge difference in your organization.
1. Say Thank You in Person
Your team members make a sacrifice to work for you-because each of them could probably earn more elsewhere. Show that you appreciate their contribution by saying "Thank you!" in person this week.
2. Listen from the Heart
The gift of your direct attention is worth more than you know. You're busy every day, and your team knows that. So when you take a few minutes to sit down, close the laptop, look a teammate in the eye and listen from the heart, you're saying, "I appreciate you" louder than any words could say.
3. Share What You Receive
As the leader, you're in a position to receive things your team never will-knowledge, opportunities, perks, contacts. Share the wealth. Pass along the good things, sometimes intangible, that come your way. It really is better to give than to receive.
4. Give a Small Gift
Kim Hawk was on the right track by shopping at a discount store for inexpensive gifts. That allowed her to give something of value, however small, to each person. You can do the same with your team. For five dollars (or less), you can give a gift that's worth a million bucks-the knowledge that you care.
And while we're at it, thank you for reading this blog and sharing your thoughts on Facebook and Twitter. I appreciate the good work you are doing in your organization, and I'm happy to be part of your team!
Happy Thanksgiving-[Stan Toler]

FATAL FIRE STRIKES NAZARENE FAMILY IN MYANMAR – PLEASE PRAY!
Karen State, Myanmar: A tragic story is emerging today out of the country of Myanmar.
On Saturday, November 21st, in the early morning hours (around 2:00am) fire broke out in the home of one of our Nazarene families.
While the children and adults were able to escape, a paralyzed man, the brother of the home owner’s wife, perished in the fire. The Karen churches are mourning the loss of this church member.
Now the home owner (also a member of the church) has been arrested as part of the investigation into the fire. The entire family is very active in the local church ministry.
Please pray for all involved, for the family as they deal with this tragic loss, for the churches as they come together to support the family, and for the man who has been imprisoned. Pray that the investigation would be objective and that no one would be falsely accused.[Submitted: Pastor Jerome T.]

Mango Tree Center Requesting Prayer
Kingdom of Tonga
The Mango Tree Respite Center Team is requesting urgent prayer for the mother of one of the children they work with.
Fipe is 25 years old and the mother of 4 young children, including Vea, a 2 year old cerebral palsy child. Fipe has been suffering from a hole in her heart that was diagnosed when she was a child. Recently, she received help from the New Zealand government and was able to go to New Zealand last week to undergo surgery.
Tragically, Fipe's condition suddenly worsened and despite urgent surgery, which was performed last Sunday (22nd November), she has not yet been able to regain consciousness.
Please pray for Fipe, that God's healing power would be over her, that she would regain consciousness and come back to her family in a healthy state.
Thank you for your prayer and God bless you.

Possible Looming Financial Situation To Impact Nazarene Health Ministries in Highlands.
Papua New Guinea (PNG), Melanesia South Pacific Field.
Recently announced PNG national budget cuts planned for 2016 are severe and according to available information, could see a reduction of 40% in the funding assistance normally provided to Kudjip Nazarene Hospital as well as severe cuts to Rural Health Services operating facilities in remote areas of the country.
This affects all of the various church-run health services, who collectively do half of the health care in the country.
Please pray for the government of Papua New Guinea to have wisdom in making a more efficient and accountable system that will prioritize services to the people of PNG and sustain these vital ministries.

Using the Life Skills God Invests in Them: the Reinharts' Story
Manila, Philippines
The Asia-Pacific Region is delighted to welcome back Dan and Janet Reinhart, as they join the team and help out the Asia-Pacific Resource Center (APRC) and the Philippine Micronesia Field Office (PMFO).
The Reinharts have already been to the Philippines, serving for 3 months in APRC back in 2010. This time, they will be staying for a few months, while Dan helps with projects for the Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (APNTS) and also serves as part of the IT team of APRC, and Janet assisting the Regional Finance Coordinator with his responsibilities.
Dan and Janet come from St. Louis, Missouri. Dan worked in IT, including four years in the US Marine Corps, from the late 60's until his retirement. Dan has also been involved in the NYI Global Bible Quizzing Ministry since the early 1970's, and in 2005, he became a global trainer in that ministry. Janet, on the other hand, spent most of her career in bookkeeping and office administration. They have six children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.

THE REINHARTS AND THEIR CALL TO MISSIONS: USING THE LIFE SKILLS THAT GOD INVESTS IN THEM
Manila, Philippines: The Asia-Pacific Region is delighted to welcome back Dan and Janet Reinhart, as they join the team and help out the Asia-Pacific Resource Center (APRC) and the Philippine Micronesia Field Office (PMFO).
The Reinharts have already been to the Philippines, serving for 3 months in APRC back in 2010. This time, they will be staying for a few months, while Dan helps with projects for the Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary (APNTS), serves as part of the IT team of APRC, and Janet assists the Regional Finance Coordinator with his responsibilities.
Dan and Janet come from St. Louis, Missouri. Dan worked in IT, including four years in the US Marine Corps, from the late 60’s until his retirement. Dan has also been involved in the NYI Global Bible Quizzing Ministry since the early 1970’s, and in 2005, he became a global trainer in that ministry. Janet, on the other hand, spent most of her career in bookkeeping and office administration. They have six children, six grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Dan and Janet’s call to missions was first fueled in 2001, when they visited the General Assembly. They were each separately impacted by the Mission Corps exhibit, and as they were on their way home discussing their experiences from the event, both came into agreement that in the distant future, after they retired, volunteer service would probably be something, “worth looking into.” Little did they know that the distant future would be coming sooner than they expected, when Dan was offered an early retirement in 2003. Originally, he planned to work as a consultant after he retired, but God had other plans for them.
Finally, in 2006, Dan and Janet solidified what God had been calling them to do, when they attended the Cross Culture Orientation (CCO). In 2007, they started their journey as Mission Corps volunteers, and have traveled and served in various locations such as Ethiopia, Argentina, Europe and the Philippines. In 2013, they became involved in the work of the Global Mission IT team, supporting missionaries around the world.
Dan and Janet describe their mission experiences as having a “uniqueness in pattern.” They have never stayed in one country on mission for any longer than six months. “Early in our missions, we learned never to plan our future and just put everything in God’s hands,” Dan recalls. He said this was because when they first started, everytime he and Janet planned on something and set a timeline, God would have a different plan for them, usually for a shorter timeframe. Sure enough, His plans always turned out much better.
The Reinharts’ call to missions, as they say, was not exactly definite, but more of a gradual awakening. For the last eight years, the rewards of friendships of those they have encountered and worked with and the memories from each experience, have been some of the many things they are thankful for. One important thing that they also learned is to put the life skills God invests in them to good use.
Whatever your skill is, there is always a need for it somewhere. It doesn’t matter if you have a Ph.D. in Theology, experience in landscaping, or administrative/clerical work. What matters is how you will use these talents for Kingdom Impact. Each person just has to be aware, know where to look, be open to opportunities and listen to what God wants them to do.
God blessed us with early retirement, and so far, God’s retirement plan for us has been AMAZING.[Dan and Janet Reinhart]
Dan and Janet feel very blessed with the work God has been directing them to do. They do not know what God has in store for them, but they always go back to a passage from the book of Romans to help them be on track:
“God’s Spirit beckons. There are things to do and places to go! This resurrection life you received from God is not a timid, grave-tending life. It’s adventurously expectant, greeting God with a childlike ‘What’s next, Papa?’ ” [Romans 8:14-15 (MSG)]

"just what do Nazarenes believe?" Have you ever been asked that question by one of your friends or acquaintances? Do you have an answer for them?
The core beliefs of the Church of the Nazarene are found in the Articles of Faith. These articles provide the essential "glue" that binds the church into a unified and cohesive whole. Without the unifying expression of our beliefs as articulated in these articles, we have no reason to exist as a denomination.
