The United Methodist Church of the Resurrection December 2015
Dear Men of Resurrection:
Michelle and I just returned from a mission trip to the Guantanamo region of eastern Cuba. There were many highlights and experiences we will never forget. I will share just one.
We were visiting many Cuban Methodist churches and missions, most in remote and impoverished areas. The church there sends out church planters to begin a congregation from scratch. (A church planter receives a salary when the funds are available of $12 per month.) A young man traveling with us was very excited for us to meet the small congregation he had been working hard to birth. When we finally arrived late at night the roads had become muddy and impassable. Our bus could go no further, short of the awaiting congregation by at least a mile. Our new friend and church planter took off running in their direction. Thirty minutes later we could see the emerging faces of young men, women (many very pregnant) and children barefoot and covered in mud, walking out of the complete darkness to see us. Under a partially hidden moon we worshipped the living God, hugged, prayed and wept with total strangers. God has indeed chosen the poor of this world to be rich in faith. We need to up our commitment to mission trips, not that we have something to teach, but that we may witness real faith and life.
Every Blessing,
Jeff

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where is home?
I am from West Omaha in Nebraska. I grew up in what I call the best of both worlds. I enjoyed the simplicity of a small German neighborhood full of young families and a fair amount of danger. I also enjoyed the excitement and ample resources of a "big city."
You are a student at St. Paul Seminary. Tell us how you felt led to study here.
I chose St. Paul School of Theology as my new home base for graduate academics because of its proximity to my family and vibrancy for renewing The Church.
You recently joined our mission team to Cuba. What is one take away from your experience from being in Cuba?
I had dreamed of going to Cuba since I was ten years old. I had certain expectations of cigar smoke billowing out of every restaurant in Havana. And I thought jazz music would be pouring out into the streets. Well, we didn't go to Havana and I am glad. I am glad for the opportunity to have served alongside a passionate team of my peers in San Antonio, Guantamo City, Baracoa, and beyond. There was a day in San Antonio in which we prayed over and washed the feet of the ministry leaders of the local Methodist Church and its coinciding Missions. The Cubanos' reaction made me aware that they also had developed expectations. They perceived us to feel entitled and prideful. Their reaction to us washing their feet said it all. They wept. We honored them as servants in el nombre de Jesus. Many barriers for forming a stronger body of Christ were torn down that day.

Men's SERVE TRIP:
Help introduce Men's Ministry in HONDURAS!
Want to impact the lives of men in Honduras as well as your own? The Methodist Churches in Honduras are trying to start men’s ministry programs in their churches. In January, Chris Folmsbee will head to Honduras to train the pastors on how to create a men’s ministry. In April, he will be returning to help these churches start strong with a 2 night men’s retreat in 3 different cities in Honduras. The first night will be a retreat with worship and time to discuss what it means to live out your faith while the second night would be an opportunity to serve the community alongside Honduran men. During the day, you will travel to the next community as well as spend time serving the local church in light construction projects. We are looking for some men who will join this team to serve alongside Chris in this exciting outreach!
