NMI Highlight
It is out of our great love for our Lord Jesus Christ, and our awareness that it is only by grace that we have been saved, that we offer love gifts to Him. Love gifts just like the woman with the alabaster jar of perfume who anointed Jesus' head so many years ago.
Jesus responded to those who were indignant with her for what they thought was a waste, and He said that what this woman had done would be spoken of in remembrance of her wherever the gospel was preached.
This is the story that prompted Elizabeth Vennum, Global Council member in 1948, to present the Alabaster Offering idea, a "love gift", as a challenging project for NMI. This was later approved by the Board of General Superintendents to use the funds exclusively for buildings and properties in cross-cultural ministries.
To-date, Nazarenes across the globe have given love gifts equivalent to over $100 million dollars for this much-needed ministry.
The "love gifts" look different in various parts of the world, but the underlying love out of which they are given is the same. And that love extends to the various areas around the globe that are able to purchase the land needed and to build their church structures, this in turn helps to expand the church body and extend that same love to others.
One of the great opportunities I have had as a missionary has been to worship the Lord in some of those structures around the world that have been built with Alabaster funds, and to hear the stories of how many daughter churches have been birthed out of these churches.
Alabaster is a multiplying ministry that should be engaged in by every member across the globe, because it is not just about land and buildings, it is about kingdom impact and is a tangible way to show our love for our Lord, Jesus Christ.

"Why Every Leader Should Go Outside and Play"
"Hidden Benefits of Time Spent in Nature"
I grew up in the days before streaming video and Xbox. In fact, we were so poor, we watched television only on our Saturday visits to the town's general store! Whenever the Toler boys were bored, Mom would settle us down with a firm order to, "Go outside and play!"
It always worked. We discovered that being outdoors banished boredom and opened up dozens of new possibilities.
I've held on to that lesson. Though nearly all of my work is done inside, I regularly make time to get back to nature. I've discovered these benefits for personal well-being, and I know they'll help you too.
1. Being outside takes your mind off your problems.
There's no greater stress buster than walking outside on a sunny day or looking up at a starry night. Listening to the wind, watching the birds, or just relaxing in the cool breeze will alter your frame of mind.
That's because being outside, even in your backyard, is a change of venue. Change your scenery, and you'll change your perspective.
2. Being outside encourages activity.
If you're like me, you would rather not run on a treadmill. But step outside and you'll likely be motivated to take a walk, pick up sticks in the backyard, or toss a ball with the kids. Get your lungs filled with air, move those cramped muscles, and you'll feel a whole lot better.
3. Being outside prompts gratitude.
It's a rare person who can look at a maple tree in full leaf or a flowing river or even well-trimmed lawn and not say, "Wow!" Seeing the marvelous world God created reminds us of all the good things we have to enjoy: life, health, family, food-and the glory of the created world. Spending time in nature will produce a swell of gratitude, and that pays dividends long after you return inside.
4. Being outside reminds you of who God is - and who you are.
Most of us take life a bit too seriously from time to time. We stake far too much emotion on the next decision, the upcoming deadline, or the current relationship problem. We want to be in control.
Looking at the vast sky, the surging ocean, or even the flight of a hummingbird will remind you that there is a God-and it's not you! There's nothing like spending time outside to put your problems in perspective.
When was the last time you took a walk, kicked a ball, or dozed off in a hammock? Try one of those activities today and you'll sleep better tonight, I guarantee it.
What about you? What's your favorite outdoor activity for opening your mind and improving your health?
I'd love to hear your answer on Facebook or Twitter.[Stan Toler]

Friday Night Bombing in Davao City Kills 14, Injures 70, Nazarenes Checking In
Friday Night Bombing in Davao City Kills 14, Injures 70, Nazarenes Checking In
Davao City, Southern Philippines: An explosion Friday Night, September 2nd, at the Roxas Night Market, Davao City, Southern Philippines, has resulted in a reported 15 fatalities and as many as 70 injured.
Davao City, Southern PhilippinesVarious news agencies are reporting on those who might be responsible for this blast.
The Philippine Micronesia Field Strategy Coordinator, Rev. Stephen Gualberto, sent in the following report:
“I have been in conference with the District Superintendent of Mindanao East District, Rev. Nicholas Cacho. He lives in Davao City and is also pastoring one of the four Nazarene churches in Davao City. He reported that no Nazarenes were injured in the bombing.
A group of young people from his church were planning to be at the market (site of the bombing) that evening to eat. But when they were about to go, one of the young people got sick and so the whole group cancelled the plan.
Another group of young adults from the Manila area were vacationing in Davao City and had been at the market just hours prior to the bombing.
While we are recognizing God’s grace in protecting these youth and thanking Him for that protection, we are at the same time extremely saddened and are praying for the families of those who lost loved ones and for those who were injured.”
Prayer Focus:Please join us in continuing to pray for the nation of the Philippines, and for the impact of the Church in serving as the tangible hands and feet of Christ. Pray for those who lost family members, and for the healing and recovery of those who were injured.

Fire Heavily Damages Church and Parsonage in Southern Philippines
Mindanao East District, Southern Philippines: It has been a challenging week for the Mindanao East District. On Monday, September 5th, a fire destroyed the Lupon Church of the Nazarene in Davao oriental. This comes after the night market bombing in Davao City on September 2nd.
Lupon Church ParsonageRev. Nicholas Cacho, District Superintendent, reported that the whole parsonage and the interior of the sanctuary were destroyed. The pastor and his family were away when the fire started. They were not able to save any of their belongings. Clothes, appliances, important documents, utensils; everything was destroyed by fire.
According to initial reports by the Bureau of Fire, the cause of the fire was faulty electrical wiring. Rev. Jessie Rosales, pastor of the church, and his wife, Whelma Rosales, are safe but traumatised by what happened.
Lupon Church SanctuaryThe church members and other churches are helping with in-kind donations and cash to provide for the Rosales and to assist with the rebuilding of the parsonage and sanctuary.
Prayer Focus:
Please pray for the Rosales family as well as for the Lupon church family as they recover from this fire.

Container of Hope on its way...Please Pray!
Container of Hope on its way…Please Pray!
Papua New Guinea: Nazarene Hospital Foundation just announced that yet another 20′ container of hope has been loaded on Wednesday, August 24th, and is now on its way from Medford, Oregon (U.S.A.) to Nazarene Health Ministries, based out of Kudjip Nazarene Hospital, Papua New Guinea.
Dr. Ted and Baby at Kudjip Nazarene HospitalNazarene Hospital Foundation was founded in 2003 by Dr. Todd Winter, but the vision and work started back in 1998. It was then when after visiting PNG, Dr. Winter started focusing on providing medical and financial support for the ongoing operations and improvement of Nazarene Hospital in Kudjip.Since its start, NHF has sent more than 26, 20-foot containers of hope.
Prayer:
Prayer and introduction to the Great Physician is one of the greatest “medicines” provided at Kudjip! Please commit to pray for the safe passage and delivery of this latest container; that the equipment and supplies within will empower the team on the ground in PNG to continue their mission of physical, but most of all, spiritual healing of those in need throughout the Highlands!
In 2015 alone, Nazarene hospital saw:
- 57,599 Outpatients
- 6,291 Admissions
- 2,214 Deliveries (247 by Caesarean section)
- 601 Major surgeries
- 962 Minor surgical procedures
- COUNTLESS lives of patients and families touched for eternity by the Chaplains, doctors, nurses, and team members.
The One...Battling to Beat the Odds
The One…Battling to Beat the Odds
Kudjip, Papua New Guinea: Nine years ago, I left the world of U.S. Family Practice and became a Missionary Physician. As a Missionary Physician I care for patients and administer treatment in ways that I would never have done if I was still in the U.S. Diagnosing and treating cancer are some of those things that I do now, that I wouldn’t be doing if I was still in North America.
Dr. Erin Meier – Nazarene Hospital. One of the hard parts about caring for patients with cancer in Papua New Guinea is that our options for treatment are limited. We have about six basic drugs that we can give, but we have to balance the doses we give with our ability to support someone whose immune system is weakened. Along with chemotherapy, we have surgery and at times radiation. We hope and pray that the combination of the three will be enough for our patients, but way too often it isn’t. Outside of a surgical cure, we rarely get cures in patients with cancer.
Prayer and introduction to the Great Physician is one of the greatest “medicines” provided at Kudjip!Topias is working to beat those odds. Topias came in almost two years ago with an abdominal mass. It was initially too large for surgery, so we gave him chemotherapy, suspecting he had lymphoma. Thankfully, the chemo shrunk it down to a size that was small enough for surgery. After surgery, the biopsy came back as a Wilm’s tumor, a tumor of the kidney found in kids and one of the most responsive to chemotherapy. We altered our chemotherapy a little bit and thankful Topias continues to do well.
Entrance to the Kudjip Hospital in Papua New Guinea. He is usually happy when he comes inside to be seen, but still cries when Aunti Letti (what he calls me – where he got that name I don’t know) and Dr. Bill do ultrasounds to look for any sign of the mass returning. So far, we haven’t been able to find any recurrence of the mass and are very thankful. We hope Topias, the youngest of 5 boys in his family, grows up to go to school, get married and have kids of his own. Until then, we will keep checking him for recurrence and thanking God for the one who has made it (at least for now), the one who has survived cancer despite our limitations, and we will keep praying for others to make it as well.
Prayer Focus:
- Please continue to pray for Topias and the some 63,000+ patients who come through the doors ofKudjip Nazarene Hospital each year. That God would use the hands and lives of our medical teams to represent the character of Christ as a means of grace. Pray that through this experience, these patients would come to a personal knowledge of the one true Great Physician!
- Pray for the team members. As mentioned, they see many cases where the outcomes are not what they would desire. This is so very difficult for the physician, nurse, chaplain, caretaker, whose calling it is to be a “healer” when even with their best efforts…physical healing is elusive. Pray that they would be protected against “compassion fatigue.”
- Pray for the finances of Nazarene Health Ministries. These have been very challenging days due to budget cuts in the amounts contributed to healthcare from the government.

Michigan District: Update from Linda Seaman for John and family.
MRI – Thurs., Aug. 25, 2016 8:52 PM
“Last Friday morning, the children and I were gathered around his bed when I told John that he had been diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor. Suddenly, he began quoting an old poem he’d learned years ago:
“We may not know when we’ll go or where we’ll go from this familiar scene, but Christ is here and Christ is there and all the way between; and though we go from all we know to some dim, vast unknown, though late we stay or soon we go,we shall not go alone!”
It was not exactly what we were expecting his reaction to be, but we should have known! He has lived his life with this assurance, and it is clearly unwavering even in these unexpected circumstances.
The world over, the Seamans have touched and impacted the lives of thousands. Here they are with the Bennetts, medical missionaries to Papua New Guinea. We met with the neuro-oncologist and neurosurgeon today. We are returning at 6 am for another MRI, and surgery is scheduled for Wednesday of next week. Because it appears this tumor originated in the brain, there is no way to determine what this “mass,” as the neuro-surgeon called it, is until they remove it and test it. At the end of our appointment with Dr. Harvey-Jumper, John quoted the poem again, then prayed for the doctor and his nurse-practitioner. Of course, he did.
We ended our morning sensing that we needed to ask you to pray tonight for a miracle.
Our prayer is that the MRI tomorrow will be clear with no sign of any abnormalities. I originally suggested that we should pray that it shows “nothing,” but John didn’t think that sounded right! Thankfully, his sense of humor remains intact! Will you join us tonight in praying for that very specific miracle?
“I have spent more hours than I can remember, flying over waters and jungles with John Seaman in our mission aircraft. I have seen him in this posture so many times. Let’s now prayer with fervency for John and the family!” – Todd Aebischer, Former Nazarene Mission Air Pilot. We have always said that we want what God wants, and that has not changed. From our viewpoint, though, the world is a better place with John Seaman in it, and it is our deepest desire that God heal and restore him completely…for our sakes and for the sake of the Kingdom for which he has lived his life so joyfully and wholeheartedly.
We are overwhelmed by your love and fervent prayers and know for a certainty that whatever lies ahead, “we shall not go alone!”[Linda for John and the family”]
John was elected superintendent of the Michigan District in 2003. Prior to serving as district superintendent, he and his wife, Linda, served as missionaries to Martinique and Côte d’Ivoire from 1976 to 2003.

Radio Crossing Mountain Ranges and Valleys to Reach and Teach in Papua New Guinea!
Highlands of Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea World Mission Broadcast (WMB) Coordinator, Rev. Daniel Eka, shares with us the influence of this ministry and how it has changed the lives of their listeners and even the people behind it!

Radio Crossing Mountain Ranges and Valleys to Reach and Teach in Papua New Guinea!

The highlands of PNG are largely untouched by the outside world.Highlands of Papua New Guinea: A short visit to the highlands of Papua New Guinea reveals a land rich with rugged mountain ranges and deep valleys, but also a land void of many of the infrastructures found in other parts of the world. It is a land of remote villages, reached only by days of walking or mission aircraft. This is a land perfectly suited for the impact of radio ministry!
Rev. Daniel Eka, WMB Ministry Coordinator for Papua New GuineaAs the month of August came to a close, Papua New Guinea World Mission Broadcast Coordinator, Rev. Daniel Eka, sent in the following report.
During the month of August we have received tremendous responses for three of our radio programs, Krai Bilong Ol Meri (Cry of Women), Kirapim Gutpela Sindaun (Starting a Good Life), and Krais I Laikim Olgeta Pikinini (Christ Loves All Kids) which collectively are airing on 17 radio stations across Papua New Guinea.
Freda Peu, program director for Krai Bilon Ol MeriFreda Peu, program director for Krai Bilong Ol Meri was very excited to report that as a result of the radio program, 10 single ladies have given their lives to the Lord. Two men also heard the program and called on the phone, discussing how they have been encouraged by the programs, and are challenged to not mistreat their wives any more.
“Even though the program is aimed at women, men are also responding to this program, which means that God is using this program to touch the lives of men as well,” shared Freda.
We know that in all of our media ministries, the quality of the production makes an impact on engagement.
“Krai Bilong Ol Meri is ranked by Wantok Radio Light (a major Christian broadcaster in the country) as one of the top locally produced Christian programs being aired,” shared Eka. “We praise God for such comments made by our major broadcast partner.”
Biora Wan, program director for Krais I Laikim Olgeta PikininiDaniel Eka went on to share that Biora Wan, who is the program director for Krais I Laikim Olgeta (Christ Loves All Kids) is not just producing the program, she is actively going and visiting children that have been contacted through the radio program.
“Imparting at least a Bible verse in [a] child’s life is more than giving a silver or a gold because God’s word is the creative power to direct life,” says Biora.
“We thank God for this vital tool/medium that God is using to touch and transform the lives of many people who are unable to read and write and who live faraway, especially in the very remotest parts of Papua New Guinea,” said Eka.
World Mission Broadcast truly is effective in reaching the otherwise unreachable populations of the world. Thank you for your ongoing participation in and prayers for this very vital ministry.

He also has been working between Korean churches and Philippine churches for evangelism, church planting, and spiritual training, leadership development, scholarship aid, and building projects in the Philippines.
Lydia Kim had been serving as the treasurer of the Philippine and Micronesia Field for 11 years from June 2002 to May 2013 and as the temporal accountant of Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary for 7 months from October 2013 to April 2014. And she is currently serving as the temporal treasurer of the Philippine and Micronesia Field.

Lydia Kim had attended at Korea Correspondence University in South Korea for four years while working at the general management office of a company in Seoul before she married to Timothy.
Their call to missions came through much prayer. Especially Timothy got clear mission call from God to the Philippines when he had 21 days' fasting prayer seeking God's direction for the future in October of 1987. God also enabled him to do 40 days' fasting prayer from May 05 to June 13, 1993 at the Touch of Glory Prayer Mountain in the Philippines for the better missionary services. Their ongoing vision is to mobilize the whole Church of the Nazarene in the Philippines. They long to see the Philippines evangelize and contribute greatly to the world mission.
Since May 2014, they have been asked by the Field to move to the Federated States of Micronesia but the plan has been delayed because Timothy has been experiencing sickness in his body one after the other.
The Kim's have three sons: InnGee who is serving the Korea Air Force as an interpreting officer, YongGee who is freshman of HanDong Global University in South Korea, and JinGee who is student of Faith Academy in the Philippines as Grade 11.
Prayer Focus:
Please commit to pray for the Kims as they undertake this new assignment and adapt to a new culture and ministry. Pray for the work of the church throughout the islands of the Federated States of Micronesia.
