Have you ever gardened? When I was younger, my mom made us garden. Well, she made us work in her garden. I'm not sure how invested we were in the byproduct, but by sheer force of her will, my mother marched me and my six brothers out to a wilty little patch in the corner of our yard.
It was unpleasant, sitting crouched between the rows pulling out weeds that magically grew back overnight. Our backs hurt. Our faces were sunburned. And all our friends were out at swimming pools. As a young teenager, it was probably the worst thing imaginable. But my mom knew something we didn't. She knew our natural inclination to laziness.
Take a lesson from the ants, you lazybones. Learn from their ways and become wise![Proverbs 6:6]
Proverbs is full of sayings on work ethic, because God takes work very seriously. Now, don't get me wrong. It's good to rest. It's even Biblically mandated. But it's equally as good to work. There needs to be a balance. So let's get out there and do our work faithfully and with joy.
