Redondo Beach, California, United States 1st UMC eNews: "Fall Get-Together (and breakfast!) this Sunday @ 9:30!" This Sunday: Children's Sunday School begins. Fall Get-Together Breakfast Ministry Fair @ 9:30!! for Thursday, 8 September 2016
-------
From Pastor Molly: More Than Worth ItThe church has been busy today, with people coming and going, getting ready for Sunday's ministry fair at the Fall Get Together. I hope you'll make plans to be there at 9:30. There are so many great things happening as a part of our church community, and I imagine that there will be some way for you to be more deeply connected. Come ready to take a quick pic in our photo booth so we can update our church directory. Write a note to express your appreciation for one of our staff members. Sign up to be a part of a November fundraiser show and silent auction. Join in the golf tournament, check out our UMW, lend a hand to the Trustees work around our campus, volunteer to help lead music, do some quilting, serve meals with Shared Bread, teach children's Sunday School...
The list goes on. All of these are opportunities for you to use your time and gifts for a part of the meaningful work of the church. And my experience is that the friendships you build along the way are worth far more than the work...
I look forward to seeing you Sunday.
Grace and peace,[Pastor Molly Vetter]

Acts 4:32-35
"Better Together"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Scripture Text:
Acts 4:32 All the many believers were one in heart and soul, and no one claimed any of his possessions for himself, but everyone shared everything he had. 33 With great power the emissaries continued testifying to the resurrection of the Lord Yeshua, and they were all held in high regard. 34 No one among them was poor, since those who owned lands or houses sold them and turned over the proceeds 35 to the emissaries to distribute to each according to his need.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary:
Acts 4:32-35
Verse 32
[32] And the multitude of them that believed were of one heart and of one soul: neither said any of them that ought of the things which he possessed was his own; but they had all things common.
And the multitude of them that believed — Every individual person were of one heart and one soul - Their love, their hopes, their passions joined: and not so much as one - In so great a multitude: this was a necessary consequence of that union of heart; said that aught of the things which he had was his own - It is impossible any one should, while all were of one soul. So long as that truly Christian love continued, they could not but have all things common.
Verse 33
[33] And with great power gave the apostles witness of the resurrection of the Lord Jesus: and great grace was upon them all.
And great grace — A large measure of the inward power of the Holy Ghost, was upon them all - Directing all their thoughts, words, and actions.
Verse 34
[34] Neither was there any among them that lacked: for as many as were possessors of lands or houses sold them, and brought the prices of the things that were sold,
For neither was there any one among them that wanted — We may observe, this is added as the proof that great grace was upon them all. And it was the immediate, necessary consequence of it: yea, and must be to the end of the world. In all ages and nations, the same cause, the same degree of grace, could not but in like circumstances produce the same effect.
For whosoever were possessors of houses and lands sold them — Not that there was any particular command for this; but there was great grace and great love: of which this was the natural fruit.
Verse 35
[35] And laid them down at the apostles' feet: and distribution was made unto every man according as he had need.
And distribution was made — At first by the apostles themselves, afterward by them whom they appointed.

Special Music: the youth will lead the chancel choir singing "We Are the World;" "Blessed Are They That Mourn" sung by the chancel choir
"We Are the World" by Songwriters: Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson
1. There comes a time when we heed a certain call
When the world must come together as one
There are people dying
And its time to lend a hand to life
The greatest gift of all
Chorus. We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
2. We can't go on pretending day by day
That someone, somehow will soon make a change
We are all a part of Gods great big family
And the truth, you know,
Love is all we need1
Chorus. We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
3. Send them your heart so they'll know that someone cares
And their lives will be stronger and free
As God has shown us by turning stones to bread
So we all must lend a helping hand
Chorus. We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
4. When you're down and out, there seems no hope at all
But if you just believe there's no way we can fall
Let us realize that a change can only come
When we stand together as one
Chorus. We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me
Chorus. We are the world, we are the children
We are the ones who make a brighter day
So lets start giving
There's a choice we're making
We're saving our own lives
Its true we'll make a better day
Just you and me

"Blessed are They That Mourn" by Brahms
Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.
They that sow in tears shall reap in joy.
They that go forth and weep, bearing precious seed, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing their sheaves with them.

Coming this Fall: Better Together
It's a church theme, a sermon series and more! All fall, we will be celebrating how we're Better Together, remembering how God works in the lives of communities and in our relationships. As the writer of Ecclesiastes said, "And though one might prevail against another, two will withstand one. A threefold cord is not quickly broken." (Ecclesiastes 4:12)
It goes much deeper, too--we come to know about God because of the people in whom we have seen God at work. Our faith and love make sense when we live them out with other people here on earth.
There's much more to say, and we hope you'll be a part of this whole meaningful season.

Happy Together was written by Garry Bonner and Alan Gordon, members of a band called The Magicians. It was rejected a dozen times and the demo acetate was worn out before being accepted by the Turtles, which was the last of the “British Invasion” bands and featured Graham Nash, who went on to fame with Crosby, Stills and Nash. The song knocked the Beatles songPenny Lane out of the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1967 and was the group’s only chart topper in the United States.
On the east side of La Brea Blvd, between Sunset and De Longpre, sits the venerable Charlie Chaplin Studios, begun in 1917 and opened in 1918. Chaplin filmed most of his great movies there. When he left Hollywood in 1952, he sold the studio, and it was used to film the Adventures of Superman. In 1960, it was sold to Red Skelton, who shot his shows there, then in 1962 it was sold to CBS, who used it to shoot Perry Mason. In 1966 it was sold to Herb Alpert to be used as the headquarters for A&M Records. In 2000, it was sold to the Jim Henson Company, where today it is used for shooting various Muppet-related adventures and is a registered historical landmark.
It was on Monday, January 28, 1985, 9:00 p.m. that limos began to arrive at the Chaplin Stage at A&M Records to record a historic event – dozens of music stars contributing their voices to a song, the proceeds of which would go towards relieving hunger in Africa, especially Ethiopia. A pet project of Harry Belafonte, the song was written by Lionel Ritchie and Michael Jackson, and produced and conducted by Quincy Jones. The stars, some of whom came directly there from the American Music Awards, were greeted by a sign at the door that said “Please check your egos at the door”, and by Stevie Wonder, who promised that if the recording was not done in one take, he and Ray Charles (both blind) would personally drive them all home.
The final recording of We Are The World began at 10:30 p.m. and was completed at 8 a.m. More than 45 of America’s top musicians took part, with over 50 that had to be turned away. The project ultimately raised $63 million (over $136 million today) and was eventually named the biggest selling single in both US and pop music history, becoming the first single ever certified multi-platinum with global sales surpassing 20 million copies.
Ein Deutches Requiem (A German Requiem) by Johannes Brahms was inspired in part by the passing of Brahms’ mentor Robert Schumann and in part by the passing of Brahms’ mother. The Requiem Mass, in the Catholic tradition, is the funeral service and is generally directed towards the deceased – “Dona Eis Requiem”, which means “grant them rest”. Brahms wanted to write a Requiem Mass that was in the vernacular – German as opposed to Latin – and was aimed at the living who had suffered the loss. The opening movement, which is one of my favorite musical pieces, opens with the words “Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall have comfort”. From an orchestrational standpoint, it is very unusual in that the violins are not used……only violas, cellos and basses, which gives the entire movement a deep, rich texture that invokes the sensation of being smothered in melted chocolate. Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, who went on to be a musician, composer and teacher of world renown and was Brahms’ closest friend, was in the front row at the premier and by the end of the first movement was a total basket case – sobbing uncontrollably.
Jack Johnson is the personification of the Hawaiian beach comber – surfer and guitar strumming musician. His mellow baritone voice and easy picking style are instantly recognizable and he has recorded his hit Better Together several times in several different styles. Better Togetherwas the first track on the 2005 album In Between Dreams and was subsequently released as a single in 2006. It peaked at #24 in the U.K. and at #23 in the U.S., and, according to our illustrious master guitarist Gaku, has become a perennial favorite at weddings (he says he plays it at every wedding).
