Illinois pastor remembered for his ‘outpouring of love’
Edward "Ed" Heck, senior pastor of Kankakee, Illinois, First Church of the Nazarene and an adjunct professor at Olivet Nazarene University, passed away September 6. He was 62.
Cindi Schimmelpfennig, executive pastor of Family Life Ministries at Kankakee First Church, told the Daily Journal Heck helped coach his church's team to victory at the National Nazarene Softball TournamentSeptember 5 in Springdale, Ohio.
"He felt wonderful," she said. "He was staying overnight to rest for the trip home."
Heck, who was recently diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer, became extremely ill that evening and died the next day after being admitted to the ICU, according to a Facebook post from the church.
He became the senior pastor at Kankakee First Church in 2000.
"He really cared about the city of Kankakee and backed it up with action," said fellow Kankakee pastor Ken Tueck, who leads Life Compass Church. "He had an outpouring of love. Not just for the church but for humanity."
Heck was also an adjunct professor of leadership at his alma mater, Olivet Nazarene University.
In 2014, Heck received a Ministerial "O" Award from the university.
"Dr. Ed Heck is one who lives out what it means to be an Olivetian and a minister of the gospel," Olivet President John Bowling said in a 2014 press release about the award. "His service for our Lord in the global Church marks him as a good and faithful servant. This award is one small way to recognize the great impact of his dedicated service."
Heck previously served at churches in Morenci, Michigan; Flint, Michigan; Vicksburg, Michigan, and Vandalia, Ohio, and was the Chicago Central district secretary for 12 years. He served on the Future of the Church Commission for General Assembly, as well as on other boards and committees for the global Church of the Nazarene.
In addition to a Bachelor of Arts in Biblical Literature from Olivet, he held a Master of Divinity from Nazarene Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry from Fuller Theological Seminary.
He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and a daughter, Alea.
"Let me declare it while I still have the ability to do so: I am right with God, I am right with things, and I’ve put things right with others," Heck wrote in a blog post September 5.
Prayer is requested for the Heck and Kankakee First Church families. More information will be posted as it is made available.

South Carolina church offers monthly art classes, 'How Great Thou Art'Iris Walliser touches up the skyline around her palm tree on her interpretation of “Seaside Palm,”
the painting for the August 19 “How Great Thou Art” painting class. (Aiken Standard photo)

At most paint nights around the country, the setting is familiar: groups of friends, mostly beginners, learning how to complete the same canvas drawings that all appear a little different at the end.
But on a Friday night at Ebenezer Church of the Nazarene in downtown Aiken, the second “How Great Thou Art” painting class started with a prayer.
Instructor and artist Susie Wessel sat in front of a group in the Holley Building, in the same space the church meets, and prayed for those who were going to participate, also asking God he take away any nerves.
Then, as most paint classes go, the group took a palette of paint colors, a selection of brushes and began following Wessel’s step-by-step instructions. The night’s painting was “Seaside Palm,” which was a swaying palm tree on a beach.
Painters started with a large, yellow bull’s-eye or circle, then used a pinkish red color around it and soon, the horizon line, sand, ocean and palm tree started to take shape. A mix of primary colors was needed for all of the shapes and colors. Sometimes the colors like the brown on the tree branches become a teachable moment.
“What are the first five words of Genesis?” Wessel asked the group, which began placing darker colors on the tree. “In the beginning, God created.”
Out of darkness, God created the light, she said, adding “you can’t have light without darkness.”
Those brief references of faith were woven into the class. Even the art tips seemed as if they could be used as lessons, such as taking a step back to get a new perspective. That tip, Wessel said she uses in painting and in life.
Originally from California, Wessel has been a member of Ebenezer Church of the Nazarene for around two years.
The Rev. Patrick Taylor, called “Pastor Patrick” by the church congregation, said the idea for the creative arts ministry came from his mother Carol Taylor and Wessel, who is teaching the class.
“They love art, and they wanted to breathe that into the life of the community,” Taylor said. “Aiken is a very artistic town, and they were like, ‘Hey, let’s do that.’”
Aside from the name, the monthly “How Great Thou Art” classes don’t have too many explicit Christian references, according to the pastor.
“I think we have a conviction that the church and our life should be creative at the heart of it, and so it’s not necessarily that we’re painting pictures of crosses, but we’re painting good pictures, because God loves craftsmanship,” he said. “It’s a very cool, spiritual act even though it’s not Christian on the face of it.”
For Wessel, however, faith is an important factor in her art. She said it was when she began painting that God began to speak to her, referencing examples of how a Bible verse coming to her mind while she began painting the ocean of “Seaside Palm.”
“I had not been thinking about it. It wasn’t premeditated. It just kind of happened, and I knew immediately that that was from the Lord. I think you’ve got to experience it to know it,” she said.
As far as the ministry works, Taylor said proceeds help other ministries at the church, like its children’s ministries. More simply, it is just engaging people in the artistic process.
“There’s not really a goal in mind other than a creative activity for the church. It’s for anyone to do. It’s just people coming to art class,” Taylor said. “They love it.”[For more information, visit, facebook.com/AikenEbenezer. Republished with permission from the Aiken Standard]

NNU professor teaches in same room where he was born
Nampa, Idaho
(KBOI2, September 6) It's more than coincidence Northwest Nazarene University music professor Walden Hughes is playing a baby grand piano in his office this day.
It's destiny – because Hughes started life as a baby in this very room in 1955.
Literally.
Hughes was born the room when it was part of the maternity ward at Samaritan Hospital in Nampa.
It's a fact he abruptly discovered 10 years ago when two former Samaritan Hospital nurses just happened to drop by to visit the old hospital which is now the fine arts building.[For the rest of the story, click here.]

Kentucky church creates 'open pantry'
Shepherdsville, Kentucky
(Wave 3 News, September 4) Standard pantry items, like dried cranberries, oats and cornbread mixes, sit inside a little red and yellow box outside of the Shepherdsville First Church of the Nazarene.
“Some people put some really nice stuff in here, it’s quality food,” Pastor Rob Beckett said.
The pantry is little. It has a roof and stands on one wooden post. It also has a latch, but not a lock. What’s special about this pantry is that it’s open to anyone.
“It’s been already almost a week and a half, it was almost emptied out, then I came back the next morning and looked and it has already been filled back up!” Beckett said.[For the rest of the story, click here. Stories to share? Send them to news@nazarene.org. Compiled by NCN News]
Flags of the Nations: Cabo Verde
The 10 stars on the flag represent the main islands of the nation. The blue represents the ocean and the sky.
The band of white and red represents the road toward the construction of the nation and the colors stand for peace (white) and effort (red).

Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Cabo Verde
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Cabo Verde in 1901.
Cabo Verde, the home nation of General Superintendent Eugénio R. Duarte, had a population of 545,993 in 2015. That same year, Cabo Verde reported 58 Churches of the Nazarene, 52 of which have been officially organized. Cabo Verde has 7,976 total members.
Cabo Verde is a Phase 3 district on the Africa Region. For more information about the Africa Region, visit africanazarene.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.
