I often ride my motorbike in the middle of traffic in Marseille, one of the most congested cities in France. Surrounded by all the potentially dangerous cars, exhaust fumes, engine noises, sirens, and sweltering heat, I sometimes feel like I might be in hell.
In these moments, I like to obey the exhortation of the apostle Paul in Colossians 3:2: “Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” I love to imagine Jesus approaching, to hug me and gather me into his arms. I am totally loved, fully accepted and forgiven, peaceful, and serene. I am God’s child.
Setting my mind on these things helps me to go through tough times. And this is not simply the fruit of my imagination. It is reality! We are all God’s children, held in God’s arms, and deeply loved.
Paul encourages us to focus on this reality, and we can do it every day. We can take a moment and set our minds on the reality that is above.
