Jesus (5)" Bible Reading: Matthew 16:13-20 for Saturday, 27 August 2016
Matthew 16:13 When Yeshua came into the territory around Caesarea Philippi, he asked his talmidim, “Who are people saying the Son of Man is?” 14 They said, “Well, some say Yochanan the Immerser, others Eliyahu, still others Yirmeyahu or one of the prophets.” 15 “But you,” he said to them, “who do you say I am?” 16 Shim‘on Kefa answered, “You are the Mashiach, the Son of the living God.” 17 “Shim‘on Bar-Yochanan,” Yeshua said to him, “how blessed you are! For no human being revealed this to you, no, it was my Father in heaven. 18 I also tell you this: you are Kefa,” [which means ‘Rock,’] “and on this rock I will build my Community, and the gates of Sh’ol will not overcome it. 19 I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of Heaven. Whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven.” 20 Then he warned the talmidim not to tell anyone that he was the Messiah.

Our Bible verses today tell us about the beginning of Jesus' last year of ministry on earth. He took His disciples to a place called Caesarea Philippi and talked with them. Jesus asked His disciples in verse 13, "Who do people say I am?"
In answer to that question, Peter confessed his faith in Jesus. He said, "You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God" (verse 16b). Peter called Jesus "Messiah." "Messiah" was the Hebrew name and "Christ" was the Greek name for the One God would send to save all people.
Peter's confession showed that he truly believed that Jesus was God's Son and his Savior. Today we need to confess that we believe Jesus is God's Son. This is part of the process of obeying God and receiving His wonderful gift of salvation.
Notice that verse 20 says Jesus told His disciples not to tell anyone that He was the Messiah. That is not true for us today. Jesus wants us to tell other people about our faith in Him.[HLN]
"Jesus answered, 'You are blessed, Simon son of Jonah...My Father in heaven showed you who I am.'"[Matthew 16:17]
PRAYER: Lord, thank You for sending Jesus to be our personal Savior. In His name. Amen.
