Shawnee Church of the Nazarene of Shawnee, Kansas, United States for Saturday, 26 August 2017 "Pastor Cara's Weekly Email"

Shawnee Church of the Nazarene of Shawnee, Kansas, United States for Saturday, 26 August 2017 "Pastor Cara's Weekly Email"

Good afternoon Shawnee Families,
Pastor Chuck and I have been prayerfully seeking for someone to partner with us on staff in ministry to our children and families. As a result of this search process (which included a meeting with the CMLT, board approval, and district approval to hire a new staff person) we would like to introduce you to Merry Sickel.
Merry and her husband, Frank.
Merry with her children, children-in-law, and grandkids!
Merry on a zip line in Costa Rica.
Merry is an amazing lady who has always felt a call to minister to children and their families. She has lived out that call as a teacher, parent educator, church volunteer, and a volunteer children's ministry leader.
She has a deep passion for being intentionally intergenerational. She is one of the most humble people I have ever met and is committed to a deep prayer life.
You can't help but feel encouraged, heard, and loved after being around Merry. She has a servant leader’s heart.
Her background has well equipped her to be a communicator not only to our young worshippers, but with their parents/guardians as well.
When meeting the CMLT she expressed her hopes to meet the needs of the families and be a resource to them. She has a desire to resource families spiritually and practically. She has a desire to give families the tools they need to succeed.
Merry's husband Frank is a wonderful parishioner. He is committed to serving the church. He enjoys a round of golf whenever he can. He works at Truman Medical Centers as the Supply Chain Services Project Manager.
On a more personal note: I met Merry at New Hope Church of the Nazarene the first week Justin and I moved to Kansas City for me to attend seminary. She actually interviewed me to be the children pastor there! She encouraged me as a young pastor. She helped me think about how to be inclusive of kids and teens in all that we do. She also helped me to think about child safety. She has become a dear friend and I am excited for the days ahead. Her first Sunday will be September 3rd where she will be here to meet everyone in person.
Thank you for your prayers and may we continue to pray and seek how to best serve our children and their families.
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Cara

Volunteer Opportunities:
 Do you enjoy singing hymns? Our Shawnee Hills service is in need of a song leader: choose hymns each week and lead the singing (pianist already in place). If you’re interested, contact Pastor Rachel at 913-749-9783 or rachelb@shawneenaz.org.
 Transportation need - Would you be willing to give someone a ride to church on Sunday mornings, or to doctor’s appointments throughout the week? If so, please contact the office.
 "Check In Greeter" - this person is a part of our children’s safety team; he/she helps families get checked in at the computer and compiles the attendance list for children's leaders. This person will also help to keep our children's hallways secure areas.
 "Sunday School Transporter" - when our children's Sunday School teachers have to leave service immediately to pick up their class from The Neighborhood, take the kids for a bathroom break, and get set up in class, they miss valuable fellowship time. Often by the time all parents have picked up their students, the church has emptied out and our teachers have missed out on visiting with adults altogether. Would you be willing to give 10-15 minutes to "transport" a kids' Sunday School class, to gift our teachers some time to connect? When they arrive for class, you can then go on to your Sunday School class!
Sweets for Senegal - We'll be talking more about our SCN Arts Team
Work & Witness trip to Senegal during our "Missions Emphasis Month" in September.
But for now, check out these treats for sale each Sunday in the foyer. They are home made by the worship arts folks and cost $1.
Communion Helpers Needed - Looking for a way to serve? We are in need of a rotation of volunteers to serve communion on Sunday mornings, as well as volunteers to bake communion bread. If interested in either of these opportunities please contact the church office!
Ladies’ Night Out September 5th @ 6:30pm Ladies- need a night out of the house!? Join us this month at Corner Cafe (in Riverside) for food & fellowship! RSVP to Heather Bitikofer so we can save enough spaces: 913-432-6211 or 913-271-2726.
