Dengue fever sweeps Sri Lanka
Red Cross Sri Lanka photo
An unprecedented dengue fever outbreak is spreading through Sri Lanka after flooding earlier this year. More than half of Sri Lanka’s districts were inundated by monsoon rains, leaving standing water as prime mosquito breeding areas.
The current infection rate is more than four times the annual average recorded since 2010. Since the beginning of 2017, more than 100,000 cases and nearly 300 deaths have been reported. Sri Lankan hospitals are so full they have been forced to turn away patients.
Dengue is a mosquito-borne viral infection that can cause severe pain and even death in severe cases. There is no known vaccination for the disease, so the best way to treat it is to avoid it altogether. With prevention as their goal, Nazarene Compassionate Ministries in Sri Lanka (NCM Lanka) has begun a project to clean up trash in areas where mosquitoes breed.
Mosquitoes can turn even small amounts of standing water, such as in an empty food container, into breeding grounds. NCM Lanka is working to eliminate standing water by removing trash, implementing recycling efforts, and filling in low ground areas where water collects.
They are focusing on 11 communities where they run child development centers and have already developed relationships, predominately in areas where government cleanup efforts aren’t able to reach. In addition to promoting recycling, NCM Lanka staff are partnering with the government to promote cleanup efforts through the distribution of trashcans. They are also implementing educational programs on the importance of removing standing water and how to recognize signs of dengue. Through these efforts, approximately 750 families will be directly impacted.

MVNU cross country teams involved in accident
SDG Newsgroup photo
Mount Vernon Nazarene University cross country teams were involved in a motor vehicle accident Friday afternoon, 18 August, around 2:45 p.m. in Shelby, Ohio.
Both the men’s and women’s cross country teams and coach were traveling northbound on South Gamble Street in Shelby when a semi-tractor trailer went left of center and struck two vehicles traveling with MVNU, causing considerable damage. Two additional vehicles traveling with the caravan were not hit. The Shelby Police Department and Shelby Fire Department responded to the scene where five MVNU players were taken to area hospitals and treated for minor injuries.
“This afternoon our cross country team, while traveling to a scheduled event in Sandusky, was involved in a multi-vehicle crash within the city limits of Shelby, Ohio," said Aaron Quinn, MVNU athletic director. "The crash, which involved a semi-tractor trailer, resulted in heavy damage to several vehicles and five student-athletes being transported to a local hospital with minor injuries for precautionary measures. In times like this, we pause to give thanks to God for his care and take a moment to reflect on the truly important things in life. I am very grateful to the city of Shelby for their willingness to step in and help in so many ways.”
Families of the players were notified and MVNU Cross Country Coach Chip Wilson was with the team for the entirety of the day. The crash is still under investigation by the Shelby Police Department. [Mount Vernon Nazarene University]

New superintendent appointed for North Central Ohio District

This week General Superintendent David W. Graves announced the appointment of Wendell Brown as superintendent of the North Central Ohio District.
Brown pastors the Heritage Church of the Nazarene, which has locations in Circleville, Chillicothe, and Waverly, Ohio. He follows Stephen Ward, who retired in July after 10 years as district superintendent.
“Throughout the years, North Central Ohio has been blessed with tremendous district leadership and fantastic pastors," Brown stated on the district website. "It is truly a blessing to have an opportunity to serve with such talented and committed people. We believe that God has put us together ‘for a time such as this’ and are trusting that He will lead us to reach the lost with His love. We have both an immense responsibility and an exciting opportunity to share His love with the world. May God give us wisdom for the task at hand and use each of our 63 churches in 22 counties to share His love with the world. I look forward to meeting each of you and laboring with you to bring glory to God. I am excited to be a part NCO’s rich history.”
Prior to joining Heritage in 2009, Brown led the Jason Chapel Church of the Nazarene in Dickson, Tennessee, and Calvary Church of the Nazarene in Huntsville, Alabama.
Wendell and his wife, Tammi Jo, reside in Circleville, Ohio.
Flags of the Nations: Bolivia
The national flag of Bolivia is a red, yellow, and green horizontal tricolor with the Bolivian coat of arms in the center. Red represents the blood shed by heroes for the birth and preservation of the Republic; yellow represents wealth and resources, and green represents the richness of natural areas as well as hope.
Since September 1, 2009, the Church of the Nazarene's Global Ministry Center (GMC) proudly flies a flag each week of one of the many nations in which the denomination is present in ministry. Leaders were invited to send a national flag to be flown at the GMC alongside the flag of the United States*. The national flags rotate weekly, and photos of them raised are sent to the church leaders of that country.
This week: Bolivia
The Church of the Nazarene officially entered Bolivia in 1945.
Bolivia had a population of 10,631,486 in 2016. That same year, Bolivia reported 238 Churches of the Nazarene, 220 of which had been officially organized. Bolivia has 12,013 total members.
Located on the South America Region, Bolivia has two Phase 3 districts, one Phase 2 district, and three Phase 1 districts. For more information about the South America Region, visit samnaz.org.
* = The weekly highlighted flag is raised on the middle of three poles in compliance with U.S. government protocols. It flies to the left of the GMC host-nation United States flag, which flies above the host-state flag of Kansas. The Christian flag flies on the third pole.
The Global Ministry Center is the mission and service hub of the Church of the Nazarene.

Pennsylvania church helps people with outstanding warrants
York, Pennsylvania
Sue Doering, 80, of York City, is reassured by York County Sheriff Richard Keuerleber while she waits her turn to resolve three parking-ticket warrants during Operation Safe Surrender at Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene's York City campus on Thursday, Aug. 24, 2017. (The York Dispatch photo)
(The York Dispatch, 24 August)
Eighty-year-old Sue Doering spent a year living in fear of being thrown in prison for having three outstanding parking-ticket warrants.
"I just ignored them. I knew I should've dealt with them sooner, but I was scared," the York City resident said. "It's been very stressful."
Two things kept her from resolving her warrants, she said — lack of money and fear.

Siloam Mission celebrates 30 years
Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada
Siloam Mission is a Nazarene compassionate ministry center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
(Winnipeg Sun, 24 August) Dennis and Mardie Wilson weren’t quite sure what they were getting themselves into when they began volunteering at Siloam Mission 10 years ago.
...
Siloam started in 1987 when Suk Woon Lee, a former inmate and member of the Korean Nazarene organization, established the first building at 695 Main Street. On Thursday, the organization celebrated its 30th birthday with a block party, including a pork lunch courtesy of Manitoba Pork.
The husband and wife duo volunteer once a week and are part of some 8,000 volunteers who do so every year.
“It’s the best thing we do all week,” Mardie said.

NNU basketball coach steps down to take over NBA India
Nampa, Idaho
Northwest Nazarene men’s basketball coach Scott Flemming accepts the Mayors’ Cup Trophy after the Crusaders beat Canyon County rivals College of Idaho 100-96 in overtime on Nov. 10, 2015, in Nampa. (Idaho Press-Tribune photo)
(31 July, Idaho Press-Tribune) Scott Flemming wasn’t looking to leave the Northwest Nazarene men’s basketball team after only two seasons as a head coach.
Ideally, he says, he would have been able to stick around the rebuilding process that he expects to really start to take off over the next couple of years.
But when an opportunity came about to lead NBA India came about, Flemming said he and his family could not turn the offer down.
