First United Methodist Church of San Diego, California, United States Daily Devotion frm Monday, 20 April 2015 to Sunday, 26 April 2015 Sermon theme: Face to Face for Sunday, 26 April 2015 by Craig Brown Text to read: Luke 24:13-35
Sunday's Scripture Text is Luke 24:13 That same day, two of them were going toward a village about seven miles from Yerushalayim called Amma’us, 14 and they were talking with each other about all the things that had happened. 15 As they talked and discussed, Yeshua himself came up and walked along with them, 16 but something kept them from recognizing him. 17 He asked them, “What are you talking about with each other as you walk along?” They stopped short, their faces downcast; 18 and one of them, named Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only person staying in Yerushalayim that doesn’t know the things that have been going on there the last few days?” 19 “What things?” he asked them. They said to him, “The things about Yeshua from Natzeret. He was a prophet and proved it by the things he did and said before God and all the people. 20 Our head cohanim and our leaders handed him over, so that he could be sentenced to death and executed on a stake as a criminal. 21 And we had hoped that he would be the one to liberate Isra’el! Besides all that, today is the third day since these things happened; 22 and this morning, some of the women astounded us. They were at the tomb early 23 and couldn’t find his body, so they came back; but they also reported that they had seen a vision of angels who say he’s alive! 24 Some of our friends went to the tomb and found it exactly as the women had said, but they didn’t see him.”
25 He said to them, “Foolish people! So unwilling to put your trust in everything the prophets spoke! 26 Didn’t the Messiah have to die like this before entering his glory?” 27 Then, starting with Moshe and all the prophets, he explained to them the things that can be found throughout the Tanakh concerning himself.
28 They approached the village where they were going. He made as if he were going on farther; 29 but they held him back, saying, “Stay with us, for it’s almost evening, and it’s getting dark.” So he went in to stay with them. 30 As he was reclining with them at the table, he took the matzah, made the b’rakhah, broke it and handed it to them. 31 Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him. But he became invisible to them. 32 They said to each other, “Didn’t our hearts burn inside us as he spoke to us on the road, opening up the Tanakh to us?”
33 They got up at once, returned to Yerushalayim and found the Eleven gathered together with their friends, 34 saying, “It’s true! The Lord has risen! Shim‘on saw him!” 35 Then the two told what had happened on the road and how he had become known to them in the breaking of the matzah.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for Luke 24:13-35
Verse 13
[13] And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
Mark 16:12.
Verse 21
[21] But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.
To-day is the third day — The day he should have risen again, if at all.
Verse 25
[25] Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:
O foolish — Not understanding the designs and works of God: And slow of heart - Unready to believe what the prophets have so largely spoken.
Verse 26
[26] Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?
Ought not Christ — If he would redeem man, and fulfil the prophecies concerning him, to have suffered these things? - These very sufferings which occasion your doubts, are the proofs of his being the Messiah.
And to enter into his glory — Which could be done no other way.
Verse 28
[28] And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.
He made as though he would go farther — Walking forward, as if he was going on; and he would have done it, had they not pressed him to stay.
Verse 29
[29] But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
They constrained him — By their importunate entreaties.
Verse 30
[30] And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.
He took the bread, and blessed, and brake — Just in the same manner as when ho instituted his last supper.
Verse 31
[31] And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.
Their eyes were opened — That is, the supernatural cloud was removed: And he vanished - Went away insensibly.
Verse 32
[32] And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?
Did not our heart burn within us — Did not we feel an unusual warmth of love! Was not our heart burning, etc.
Verse 33
[33] And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,
The same hour — Late as it was.
Verse 34
[34] Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.
The Lord hath appeared to Simon — Before he was seen of the twelve apostles, 1 Corinthians 15:5. He had, in his wonderful condescension and grace, taken an opportunity on the former part of that day (though where, or in what manner, is not recorded) to show himself to Peter, that he might early relieve his distresses and fears, on account of having so shamefully denied his Master.
Verse 35
[35] And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.
In the breaking of bread — The Lord's Supper.

Here we have two of Jesus' disciples who just went through a trying three or four days, actually a week, from the triumphant entry into Jerusalem where the people yelled praise to the Son of David who has come to redeem Israel as her King and Messiah to seeing Jesus beaten and killed on the stake then buried dead. Dead! Now, they hear of rumors or stories that some of the women among them have seen Jesus alive and well. They leave Jerusalem and go to a village called Emmaus and talk with a straner on the road than this stranger after being invited into their home blesses and breaks bread and gives it to them to eat. Here is where they recognize the stranger as Jesus, but He becomes invisible to them. They talk to each other about their hearts burning when this stranger was talking with them. They gather up and return to Jeruaalem no matter what hour it is to return to the other disciples and share their experience. Wow! How would you have taken these events in stride? Would you understand that Jesus truly died and is raised from the dead and appearing to people. His disciples and brothers and sisters. How do react to these stories and others over these two thousand years? We come to reaie that God did come in human form as Jesus, lived, suffered, died, and was raised to redeem us from our sins and give us life, eternal live now and forever. We come and remember Jesus' words by taking and eat His Body and drink His blood through the partaking of the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist singing the Hymn "The Road To Emmaus" by Jason Upton
1. Have you ever said goodbye to a hero
Have you ever had to lay away your dreams
Have you ever been so lonely that a strangers your best friend
Then you'll know what I mean
2. So this is our highway to heaven
Our American dream
The two fools on the road to Emmaus
Well they might as well be you and me
3. Have you ever been angry at your country
Have you ever been angry at your God
Have you ever been so angry
That you can't see what you've got right in front of you
4. Have you ever been distracted by the homeless
Have you ever thrown your dollar with disgust
Have you ever thought the great commissions just too great a cost
Have you ever played the fool
