Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"Always Room for One More"
Acts 8:26-40

Lectionary Scriptures:
Acts 8:26 An angel of Adonai said to Philip, “Get up, and go southward on the road that goes down from Yerushalayim to ‘Azah, the desert road.” 27 So he got up and went. On his way, he caught sight of an Ethiopian, a eunuch who was minister in charge of all the treasure of the Kandake, or queen, of Ethiopia. He had been to Yerushalayim to worship; 28 and now, as he was returning home, he was sitting in his chariot, reading the prophet Yesha‘yahu. 29 The Spirit said to Philip, “Go over to this chariot, and stay close to it.” 30 As Philip ran up, he heard the Ethiopian reading from Yesha‘yahu the prophet. “Do you understand what you’re reading?” he asked. 31 “How can I,” he said, “unless someone explains it to me?” And he invited Philip to climb up and sit with him.
32 Now the portion of the Tanakh that he was reading was this:
“He was like a sheep led to be slaughtered;
like a lamb silent before the shearer, he does not open his mouth.
33 He was humiliated and denied justice.
Who will tell about his descendants,
since his life has been taken from the earth?”[a]
34 The eunuch said to Philip, “Here’s my question to you — is the prophet talking about himself or someone else?” 35 Then Philip started to speak — beginning with that passage, he went on to tell him the Good News about Yeshua.
36 As they were going down the road, they came to some water; and the eunuch said, “Look! Here’s some water! Is there any reason why I shouldn’t be immersed?” 37 [b] 38 He ordered the chariot to stop; then both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and Philip immersed him. 39 When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord snatched Philip away. The eunuch saw no more of him, because he continued on his way — full of joy. 40 But Philip showed up at Ashdod and continued proclaiming the Good News as he went through all the towns until he came to Caesarea.[Footnotes:
Acts 8:33 Isaiah 53:7–8
Acts 8:37 Some manuscripts include verse 37: And Philip said, “If you believe with all your heart, you may.” He answered, “I believe that Yeshua the Messiah is the Son of God.”]
John Wesley's Notes-commentary for
Acts 8:26-40
Verse 26
[26] And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.
The way which is desert — There were two ways from Jerusalem to Gaza, one desert, the other through a more populous country.
Verse 27
[27] And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,
An eunuch — Chief officers were anciently called eunuchs, though not always literally such; because such used to be chief ministers in the eastern courts.
Candace, queen of the Ethiopians — So all the queens of Ethiopia were called.
Verse 28
[28] Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.
Sitting in his chariot, he read the Prophet Isaiah — God meeteth those that remember him in his ways. It is good to read, hear, seek information even in a journey. Why should we not redeem all our time?
Verse 30
[30] And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?
And Philip running to him, said, Understandest thou what thou readest? — He did not begin about the weather, news, or the like. In speaking for God, we may frequently come to the point at once, without circumlocution.
Verse 31
[31] And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.
He desired Philip to come up and sit with him — Such was his modesty, and thirst after instruction.
Verse 32
[32] The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:
The portion of Scripture — By reading that very chapter, the fifty-third of Isaiah, many Jews, yea, and atheists, have been converted. Some of them history records. God knoweth them all. Isaiah 53:7
Verse 33
[33] In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.
In his humiliation his judgment was taken away — That is, when he was a man, he had no justice shown him. To take away a person's judgment, is a proverbial phrase for oppressing him.
And who shall declare, or count his generation — That is, who can number his seed, Isaiah 53:10; which he hath purchased by laying down his life?
Verse 36
[36] And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
And as they went on the way they came to a certain water — Thus, even the circumstances of the journey were under the direction of God. The kingdom of God suits itself to external circumstances, without any violence, as air yields to all bodies, and yet pervades all.
What hindereth me to be baptized? — Probably he had been circumcised: otherwise Cornelius would not have been the first fruits of the Gentiles.
Verse 38
[38] And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
And they both went down — Out of the chariot. It does not follow that he was baptized by immersion. The text neither affirms nor intimates any thing concerning it.
Verse 39
[39] And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
The Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip — Carried him away with a miraculous swiftness, without any action or labour of his own. This had befallen several of the prophets.
Verse 40
[40] But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
But Philip was found at Azotus — Probably none saw him, from his leaving the eunuch, till he was there.
Sermon Story "Seeking the Truth" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 3 May 2015
God is moving in this early movement after Jesus' ascension and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. One of the biggest persecutors at this time has orders from the Jewish Religious Leaders to arrest the people of the Way. Yet, the disciples and new followers of Jesus's Way continue to proclaim His message. Philip is one of these who is in a city where God's Spirit is moving, but the Holy Spirit brings him out to a road where he sees a chariot with an Ethiopian Eunuch reading the Scroll of the Prophet Isaiah. Philip simplu asks the man if he understands what he is reading. The man says or ask the question how can I understand unless someone explains it to me. The man invites Philip up into the chariot and from this text of Isaiah Philip proclaims the Message of Jesus life, teachings, sufferings, death, resurrection, ascension, and sendin the Holy Spirit. As they approach a body of water, the man ask Philip what prevents him from being baptized. He stops the chariot and they go into the water and Philip baptizes the man. As soon as the Ethipian is baptized, the Holy Spirit sends Philip away and the Ethipian does not see Philip again but goes on his way praising God. How do you see yourself in this passage? How would you have reacted if you were Philip? How do you act in today's world? We come to realize that Jesus cals us to give witness in word and deed of God's love to whomever God places in our path. We come to eat the body of Jesus and drink His blood as we participate in the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist singing the Hymn "Here I am, send Me"
1. Hast Thou, O Lord, a work to do?
Here am I, send me!
The field is white, the laborers few,
Here am I, send me!
Refrain:
Over mountain, plain or sea,
Here am I, send me!
I'll go to the ends of the earth for Thee,
Here am I, send me!
2. O touch my lips with fire divine,
Here am I, send me!
The dross consume, the gold refine,
Here am I, send me!
Refrain:
Over mountain, plain or sea,
Here am I, send me!
I'll go to the ends of the earth for Thee,
Here am I, send me!
3. A lowly vessel at Thy feet,
Here am I, send me!
O cleanse and for Thy use make meet,
Here am I, send me!
Refrain:
Over mountain, plain or sea,
Here am I, send me!
I'll go to the ends of the earth for Thee,
Here am I, send me!
4. My heart now longs and yearns to go,
Here am I, send me!
To reap Thy harvest here below,
Here am I, send me!
Refrain:
Over mountain, plain or sea,
Here am I, send me!
I'll go to the ends of the earth for Thee,
Here am I, send me!

Conversation and Transformation
The scripture story for this Sunday, about Philip and an Ethiopian man, describes their surprising encounter. It's surprising because they were not people who seemed likely to end up in conversation together-far less in a life-changing conversation that ended with the sacrament of baptism.
It's amazing what can happen when we stop to listen and to talk to one another, about things that really matter.
It's easier to keep the topics light. But now and then, at least, amazing things can happen when we dare to wade into the difficult waters of real conversation. Real conversation starts with listening, and makes space for questions. Real conversation always remembers the value of the people involved, and makes room for everyone to be changed by the encounter.
I hope you will take the time and energy for some real conversation this week; God can do amazing things when we dare to listen, to follow and to speak
Grace and peace,

Sermon Series: A Place to Call Home
In Resurrection, Jesus makes a home for us that's something new, wild and different. It's home where we're loved unconditionally, where we become family with unlikely people, and a "home" that isn't restricted to any one place.
Pastor Molly began a new sermon series on April 19, exploring what it means to find a home in God.
Parking Reminder: If you are able, we encourage you to park at the Wells Fargo bank on Sunday mornings, and walk across the street, reserving the parking lot for those with mobility challenges or for new visitors. We also have a bike rack on the patio, for those who choose to bike to church! Thanks for your consideration.
New Earth Day Banners
Made by our children
At our Sunday morning Earth Day workshop, some of our children helped Pastor Molly make a new set of worship banners, especially for Earth Day. The cross designs are made from recycled magazines. Read more about the project on our website.
We had a fantastic visit to the Dead Sea Scrolls exhibit at the California Science Center! If you didn't get to go with the group, consider going on your own before the exhibit closes in September.
Thanks to Johnna Kosnoff for organizing this event!

A New Way to Connect with your Church Family!
Our church is now using an online, cloud-based system for keeping our records. As a part of this system, members and regular attenders of the church can be invited to log on, where you can find an always-updated church directory, access to information about church groups and committees, and easy options for electronic giving. It's accessible from smart phones, tablets or computers.
Our children and youth departments are switching to this system for keeping all of our registration info--including emergency contact info and health information that we need for events and trips.
Many of you have already received an invitation to create a login for this system, which is called Realm. In coming weeks, we will be sending invitations to more of you. In the meantime, if you would like access, please let us know. On Sunday, May 3, Pastor Molly will host a brief walk-through of the site after each of our worship services, for those who would like to know more about how to use this convenient system!
The Lay Looker, Bob Peterson

a view from the pew from a longtime member of our church
Our church young people are learning sales skills. Perhaps skills are not the proper name as it seems they just are waiting for buyers....of any age. They are trying to raise a bit more funding for their coming trip to Baja California, Mexico and selling T-shirts, sweat shirts and even hoodies is what we saw them doing last Sunday. I browsed a bit and of course, you may know that I'm a bit too...

"It's a Small World" by Bob Peterson
Our church young people are learning sales skills. Perhaps skills are not the proper name as it seems they just are waiting for buyers...of any age. They are trying to raise a bit more funding for their coming trip to Baja California, Mexico and selling T-shirts and hoodies is what we saw them doing last Sunday. I browsed a bit and of course, you may know that I'm a bit too old for more T-shirts, etc., but no one came up to me and said, "Hey, Bob. Why don't you buy a shirt and help us fund the Baja Trip this Spring?" Oh, by the way, money donations are accepted if your closet is full of T-shirts unworn. Just mark it for the Baja Mission, 2015 and it'll help fund their trip. That's what I intend to do. These shirts spell out our Beach Faith with a nice logo in front, and names our Redondo Beach First United Methodist Church on the back.
Two weeks from today, on May 17th there will be another pot-luck luncheon in the fellowship hall for all of us who bring food to be eaten or even some who forgot. There always seems to be enough so that even the money counting teams get fed. Pot-lucks are not all about the food, although that is a great reason to attend. It seems as if the fellowship is the main reason people stay around church another half hour or so to visit, get acquainted, or explain that the noise you hear is from their children, just having a great time. Don't miss this May 17th pot-luck lunch in the fellowship hall.
The other day I was in La Canada-Flintridge at the Descanso Gardens and met a woman from the church South of us on Broadway. This Christ Church Episcopalian lady's name is Mercedes and she knows a bunch of our workers at Shared Bread including Carol Walter who heads it up. She thinks its a great program and loves to work there most Wednesdays. It's a small world after all, as the Disney song goes.
