REFLECTION
Love, Faith and Obedience - I John 5:1-5
Rev. Samuel Chung, Chinese Ministries Facilitator USA/Canada
We usually talk about love and faith as though they are entirely separate things. Yet John shows us a better way to understand these virtues: love and faith are connected in that, when we receive the love of God and follow His commands by faith, our faith finds its outgrowth in love for others.
I believe this insight is crucial when we come to the Lord’s Table. When we partake of the bread and the cup in remembrance of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, we are enacting an interconnection of love, faith, and obedience.
Recently, I started a Cantonese/Chinese worship service in my local church. Right now, it is made up of a core group that is working together to plan the services. The first Sunday we gathered, we had Holy Communion at the end of the service. As we took the bread and cup together, I acknowledged to the group what we all knew: that in and of ourselves, it would be almost impossible to plant a new ministry. We don’t have enough people in our group, we don't have financial support, and we don’t have a good place to meet. Nonetheless, we all felt the Lord leading us to start this ministry. We do what we do because we have experienced God’s love and want to respond by sharing His love with others. With our own knowledge and abilities, we know we can’t do much. Yet, by faith, we do what God asks of us. We know that when we try our best, God will do the rest.
When we study Hebrews 11, we see that many of the heroes of faith did not see the result of their faith. Abel was killed before he could hear God commend him. Enoch was taken up to heaven before he could hear the commendations of his fellow believers. Abraham did not see his heirs became nations. Moses did not see the Israelites enter the Promised Land. But as the author of Hebrews writes, “Faith is being . . . certain of what we do not see ” (11:1).
So today, as we start planting ministries for God, we do so because we want to respond to God’s love by loving Him, loving others, and following His commands. We plant by faith. And indeed, we are blessed as we do so because, as Hebrews 12:1 tells us, “we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses.” Scripture shows us the results of faithfulness—we can know for sure that if we walk by faith, God will bless our work and be glorified through our faithfulness.
Let us continue to serve Him with faith, love, and obedience.

A NOTE FROM THE MULTICULTURAL MINISTRIES DIRECTOR
DR. ROBERTO HODGSON
A few days ago, I participated in the North American Dynamic Church Planting International Summit at Mid America Nazarene University. The Summit was focused on vision casting, training, and reporting by DCPI leaders, strategic planning for a church planting movement in North America and world-wide, as well as time for testimony, prayer, fellowship and more. In one of the presentations the following chart was introduced in a lesson entitled “Mentoring Rhythms”. I’d like to share this chart with you; I thought you might find it useful to adapt these concepts for mentoring your leaders of influence.
