US president appoints New York pastor to poverty, inequality council

Read moreGabriel Salguero, co-lead pastor of the Lamb's Church of the Nazarene in New York City, New York, will be appointed to U.S. President Barack Obama's Advisory Council on Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships, the President announced last week.
According to whitehouse.gov, the council is responsible for:
Identifying best practices and successful modes of delivering social services
Evaluating the need for improvements in the implementation and coordination of public policies relating to faith-based and neighborhood organizations
Making recommendations to the president and the administration on changes in policies, programs, and practices
The council specifically focuses on reducing poverty and inequality and offering assistance to other underserved persons. These emphases align with Salguero's personal interest in issues that affect the Latino community, namely poverty, immigration, and education. In addition to pastoring, Salguero is president of the National Evangelical Latino Coalition and a member of numerous other social justice organizations, including The Evangelical Immigration Table and My Brother's Keeper Alliance. Salguero has been listed among the nation's top Latino leaders by several organizations.
"Serving on a president's advisory council is part of our continued commitment to a biblical public witness," Salguero said. "Scripture teaches us through the examples of Joseph, Esther, and Daniel that access to political power requires responsibility to the most vulnerable. I am extremely humbled to be asked to represent a Hispanic evangelical voice on this council."
Among the other leaders selected for the council are Jo Ann Lyon, general superintendent of The Wesleyan Church, and David Jeffrey, national commander of The Salvation Army. The Wesleyan Church and The Salvation Army are both sister denominations to the Church of the Nazarene. All three are members of theWesleyan Holiness Consortium.
Salguero has pastored the Lamb's Church of the Nazarene since 2005. He is a graduate of Eastern Nazarene College and was recently a featured speaker at the USA/Canada Region's Nazarene Youth Conference.

Ben Carson speaks at Olivet chapel

Read moreU.S. presidential candidate Dr. Ben Carson told students Thursday at Olivet Nazarene University that the U.S. was “a place of dreams” for him as he overcame poverty, pursued higher education, and rose to the top of his profession as a pediatric neurosurgeon.
Carson was the featured speaker at Thursday’s service in the Centennial Chapel on Olivet’s main campus in Bourbonnais. He shared details of his life story, describing his childhood in inner-city tenements in his native Detroit and Boston. His mother, married and divorced early in her life, had a third-grade education and pushed her two sons to excel, Carson explained.
“I was a poor student — about as bad as you could imagine,” he said, also acknowledging anger issues and low self-esteem. “But I learned that if you’re not always looking for excuses, then you start looking for solutions. And that can change the trajectory of your life.”
He said his mother’s insistence on reading helped him develop intellectually, and he began to dream of a career in medicine. He earned a scholarship to Yale and graduated from the School of Medicine at the University of Michigan. At age 33, he became the youngest major division director in the history of Johns Hopkins University, where he directed pediatric neurosurgery for 29 years.
In addition to his presidential candidacy, Carson is recognized for outstanding contributions and numerous historic surgeries in the field of pediatric neurosurgery. CNN and TIME named him one of the nation’s 20 foremost physicians and scientists in 2001. U.S. News & World Report and Harvard University named him one of “America’s Best Leaders.” A 2014 Gallup poll ranked him among the 10 most-admired men in the world. He received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Springarn Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the NAACP.
Carson’s visit to Olivet was co-sponsored by the university’s Center for Law and Culture with Freedom’s Journal Institute for the Study of Faith and Public Policy.[Olivet Nazarene University]

M+Power: Nazarenes train in India for mission

Read moreThis summer, 21 potential M+Power volunteers from India and South Asia — along with a group of mentors and trainers — gathered in Bangalore, India, for a Eurasia Mission Orientation (EMO), where the group spent five days discovering what it means to serve cross-culturally; 16 interviewed for volunteer placement somewhere on the Eurasia Region.
Mobilization is one of the four regional priorities established by Eurasia Regional Director Arthur Snijder and Annemarie Snijders, coordinator for the M+Power program, which implements the mobilization of volunteers in Eurasia.
This was the second training of its kind; the first was held for European Nazarenes at the Eurasia Region office in June. The purpose of the training is to help people explore a possible call to cross-cultural ministry and train them for missionary assignments in their own nation and culture. The four-day training was divided into two parts. In the first part, mentors underwent training; in the second part, the volunteers. A major portion of the training focused on effective communication on different levels, ranging from facts and worldview to feelings and spirituality.
“I always thought that everybody thought like me,” said mentor Rev. Vijay. “M+Power helped me realize this was my myth. It helped me to see different worldviews through different colored glasses that people wear. Stories to help understand cross-cultural contexts were very helpful. Fundraising tips opened different ideas to prepare myself financially.”
Additional topics included different ways of learning, cross-cultural adaptation, travel tips, how to share one’s testimony without using Christian jargon, and the structure of the denomination.
“I knew the culture is different in every part of the world, but after attending this orientation I was able to realize the various aspects of a culture,” said Miriam, a potential volunteer. “This training also helped to see from their glasses and how to find the points to build bridges. I also realized that working cross-culturally is a serious task but at the same time an opportunity to learn more.”
One of the participants is about to embark on a mission opportunity in the Maldives, a group of islands near Sri Lanka. Others were ready to go out as volunteer missionaries as soon as possible.
“This is a real breakthrough, since the Church of the Nazarene has been in India for over 100 years, and until now, there have been two to four missionaries being sent by India,” Annemarie Snijders said. “During the EMO there were at least six people that were ready and motivated to go out and serve either in India or in South Asia.”[Church of the Nazarene Eurasia Region]

NNU announces steady overall fall 2015 enrollment
Northwest Nazarene University Interim President Joel Pearsall announced this year’s enrollment of 2,035 students.
“I am pleased with our enrollment numbers this year," Pearsall said. "But beyond the numbers, I’m delighted by the individuals I’ve personally encountered who are now calling NNU their home. Having just spent time getting to know our freshmen better at Freshman Retreat, I know this class of students will contribute greatly to the NNU community in the years ahead.”
Overall, numbers for 2015 of 1,323 undergraduate and 712 graduate and doctoral students indicate a steady total enrollment number of 2,035 compared with 2,058 students in fall 2014.

Trevecca breaks all-time enrollment record
For the second consecutive year, Trevecca Nazarene University has broken its all-time enrollment record in traditional undergraduate students. After the first week of classes, the university recorded an enrollment of 1,245, marking the first time numbers have topped 1,200 in university history.
Last fall, Trevecca broke a 113-year all-time enrollment record with 1,115 traditional undergraduate students. This year’s numbers reflect a 12 percent increase over that record-breaking enrollment. In addition, the fall enrollment number marks a 25 percent increase in traditional undergraduate students over the past five years.
A large incoming freshmen class and increased number of transfer students, as well as a high retention rate of current students, all played a part.

Benner Preachers Conference September 29 and 30. This year’s conference, Local Flavor: Preaching in Context, featured seven preachers from a diverse set of local congregations across the U.S.
“Our preachers represent a wide range of settings, including a multi-campus church, a modern-day Mayberry, and a church in the heart of New York City,” said Jesse C. Middendorf, general superintendent emeritus and executive director of the NTS Center for Pastoral Leadership, which organizes the conference each year. “We invited them to preach a sermon as they would in their own local context and then reflect with our panelists and audience members on why that sermon was important for their congregation to hear. We were pleased to have more than 200 participants — from 24 states in the U.S. and one province in Canada — gathered in the J. B. Chapman Memorial Chapel here at NTS this week to hear Shawna Songer Gaines, Albert Hung, Javier and Annette Mondragon, Phil Stout, Althea Taylor, Daron Brown, and Brent Hofen. The preaching was powerful, the worship (led by Marvin Jones) was uplifting, and the fellowship was encouraging.”
Following the conclusion of the first day’s conference sessions, a group of nearly 200 NTS students, staff, alumni, faculty, faculty emeriti, and friends gathered at Kansas City First Church of the Nazarene to celebrate "70 Years of Preparing Kingdom Leaders.” During the evening, the seminary’s first president, Hugh C. Benner, was remembered with a special video tribute, as well as by his son and daughter, Richard Benner and Janet Miller. There were also special presentations made to families of those who have recently endowed scholarships in memory of a loved one, including the families of Larry Lott and Paul Orjala; as well as special recognition and thanks given to the family of Marge Smith, who donated a painting in honor of Delbert Gish, former NTS professor and registrar. Ron Benefiel, the eighth president of the seminary, helped to celebrate the importance of “place,” noting the significance of the seminary’s consistent presence in the heart of Kansas City.
Two members of the NTS first class were in attendance at the special dinner: James Holman and Reuben Welch, both of whom entered the seminary in 1945 and graduated in 1948. Steve Estep, president of the NTS Alumni Association, acknowledged all alumni in attendance, asking them to each stand decade by decade, beginning with the 40s and ending with members of the most recent graduating class.
General Superintendent Jerry D. Porter read a letter from the Board of General Superintendents congratulating NTS President Carla Sunberg and the seminary.
“Dr. Sunberg, you and the NTS faculty and staff are part of a rich heritage. You stand on the shoulders of great leaders who have gone before you. Alumni, you are the torchbearers faithfully proclaiming the message entrusted to you. Students, you have answered God’s sacred call and are preparing yourselves to encounter a hurting world with the radical message of amazing grace. This celebration is not merely about the history of an institution, but about God’s faithfulness to and through His servants who have gone before you, and an affirmation that you may rely on this same God to see you through no matter what may come.”
“This week has been a wonderful celebration of what God has done, is doing, and will continue to do at Nazarene Theological Seminary," Sunberg said. "Many great things have happened over the course of the past 70 years and we look to the future with great anticipation as we sense that new winds are once again blowing in and among our community—great things are STILL happening at Nazarene Theological Seminary! Truly God has been faithful, and we give Him all the praise for what he continues to accomplish through our thousands of graduates around the world.”[Nazarene Theological Seminary]

Gospel Music Association Dove Award Winner Colton Dixon headlined the event, along with many other bands.
“SonFest was phenomenal this year," said Rachel Kuhn, assistant director of Admissions at MVNU. "Between the sunshine, Colton Dixon, Ride Nature, and over 2,300 in attendance, we really rocked it out.
“The feedback has been great and we look forward to our 19th annual SonFest event in the fall of 2016.”
Other bands performing on the two stages were Trip Lee, Leeland, I Am They, Da Mac, Wyndsor, Take the Name, Populis, The Florals, Amena Brown, DJ Opdiggy, Fever Fever, and Ever Burning Bright.
Phil Tuttle (Class of 1999) has been assisting behind the scenes since the event’s beginning 18 years ago.
“I was a student at the very first SonFest, so it was great to be a part of making this year’s event a success," Tuttle said. "There were two stages full of great bands and artists that made Saturday so much fun."
The event also featured a skate park and action sports mission organization Ride Nature, inflatable games, festival food, and more.

NNU receives grant for wildfire research
Northwest Nazarene University professors Dale Hamilton and Barry Myers will use an off-the-shelf unmanned aerial system with an attached camera to fly over affected areas after fires have been extinguished to assess and monitor the effects of the fire. The data obtained will be a significant piece in recovery planning. Read moreNorthwest Nazarene University announced Assistant Professor of Computer Science Dale Hamilton and Associate Professor of Computer Science Barry Myers were awarded a NASA EPSCoR (experimental program to stimulate competitive research) Undergraduate Research Grant to support their research on fire monitoring and assessment technology. The purpose of the NASA EPSCoR Program is to provide more opportunities to areas of the country that have often lacked aerospace research. The first round of funding was received last fall, which allowed research to begin at the end of 2014.
The goal of this project, which has been dubbed FireMAP, as stated in the proposal is to “provide a responsive, affordable, and safe tool to assist with the development of post-fire recovery plans and for updating spatial fuel layers to reflect the effects of the fire on vegetation.”
Hamilton and Myers will use an off-the-shelf unmanned aerial system (UAS) with an attached camera to gather and process data. The UAS will be able to fly over affected areas after fires have been extinguished to assess and monitor the effects of the fire. The data obtained will be a significant piece in recovery planning. The use of UAS is also an economical breakthrough, as, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, it is roughly 10 percent the cost of using manned aircraft.
In preparation for photographing wildfire burns, the FireMAP team collaborated with Tegan Byerly’s engineering class at Vallivue High School to calibrate the UAS imagery. This collaboration was the result of the high school class wanting to contribute to the FireMAP project. By effectively marking a giant ruler across the Vallivue soccer field and flying the drone directly above a designated start point, the team was able to more accurately calibrate the spatial resolution of the imagery taken with the drone at varying heights. By more accurately defining the spatial resolution of the imagery, the FireMAP team was better prepared to go out into the wildfires and acquire more precise data.
During the summer, the team used drones to photograph the aftermath of a wildfire, which allowed them to identify where the fire burned, what was burned, and in turn translate the imagery into usable data that can support prevention research.
Hamilton is confident in the future of UAS use in wildfire research.
“We are very encouraged by the ability of the prototype systems we built over the summer to classify wildland fire extent and severity from hyperspatial UAS imagery," he said. "Our initial success in identifying where a fire burned as well as the vegetation types found outside the burn area bode well for the potential that can be achieved with future research.”
In addition to supporting the two faculty members, the grant will also provide opportunity for undergraduate computer science students to be involved in the FireMAP project. Six NNU computer science majors — Nicholas Hamilton, Tim Mong, Peter Oxley, Johnathan Hamilton, Stacie Zaroban, and Genesis Cruz — are the planned research assistants for the wildfire monitoring and assessment project.
For Hamilton, the emerging field of ecoinformatics is something he plans to research long after FireMAP ends.
“There is an immense amount of research that needs to be done," he said. "From the development of analytics to mine knowledge from data derived from hyperspatial UAS imagery and other data sources to building the capability to manage the voluminous amounts of resulting data, there is enough work to keep me busy while I finish my doctorate, and for the rest of my career.”

Read moreThe Department of Music at Trevecca Nazarene University announced the formation of a new advisory board. Comprised of a diverse range of producers, songwriters, and music industry professionals, the board will advise the faculty regarding a proposed songwriting certificate program.
While much of the two-year songwriting program will focus on developing students’ talent and musical understanding, they will also learn vital skills to help them navigate the music industry.
“Students will learn the practical skills they need as songwriters,” said Dean Diehl, director of Trevecca’s music business program. “In addition, they’ll also have the experiences they need to connect to the industry.”
The board will help Trevecca determine the skills, experiences, and knowledge base students will need to receive certification in the program. In addition, advisory board members will continue to help Trevecca connect students to the music industry through quality interactions, apprenticeships, practicums, and internships.
“This is a win for students,” Diehl said. “Nashville is such a rich influence for students interested in songwriting and this will allow them to interact with industry professionals.”
The songwriting advisory board members include:
- Dave Clark is the creative director for Lillenas Music Publishing, producer of two Grammy®-nominated projects, and a well-known songwriter.
- Benji Cowart has been a worship leader for more than 15 years, serving alongside his wife, Jenna. Their songwriting credits include songs for Big Daddy Weave and Ben Catelone.
- Dean Diehl, director of Trevecca’s music business program, is also a member of the faculty at Trevecca’s Skinner School of Business and Technology. He serves as senior vice president of Provident Music Group and has worked with artists such as Casting Crowns, Third Day, and Michael W. Smith during his 20 years in the industry.
- Bart Herbison is the executive director of the National Songwriters Association. He previously worked as a journalist and was instrumental in the passage of the Songwriters Capital Gains Tax Equity Act, which helped songwriters get royalties when their music was purchased through subscription services.
- Dan Huff, formerly of the Christian rock band Whiteheart and the rock band Giant, and has played guitar in sessions with the likes of Michael Jackson, Taylor Swift, and Celine Dion. He has also worked as a producer for Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, and Brantley Gilbert, among others. He is a two-time Country Music Association Musician of the Year.
- Pamela Lewis is the founder and president of PLA Media, a marketing and PR firm. She was a member of the team that launched MTV and has worked with clients ranging from Dolly Parton and the Judds to Trisha Yearwood and Garth Brooks.
- Mike Meade, vice president of Buddy Lee Attractions, leads the agency’s speaker and guest appearance division. He has also worked with TLE, Tracy Lawrence’s management company, and at his own company, The Meade Group.
- Ralph Murphy is an artist, author, and songwriter. He has written hit songs for Crystal Gayle, Don Williams, Ronnie Millsap, and Randy Travis. He works with ASCAP to facilitate workshops for songwriters as well as protect songwriters’ rights. He is the author of Murphy’s Laws of Songwriting.
- Devon O’Day is a radio broadcaster known for her work with Gerry House and the House Foundation. A voice professional, she has been the voice of Hilton Hotels, KFC, and was the announcer for the Dove Awards for nine years. She is also a songwriter, with songs recorded by George Strait, Trace Adkins, Lee Ann Womack, and others. She owns Hippie Chick Twang Media, has written six books, and narrated more than 20 audio books for Harper Collins.
The creation of the songwriting advisory board was an important step in the proposal process for the planned certificate program. The proposal must now be approved by Trevecca’s School of Arts and Sciences, the university, and the National Association of Schools of Music, the national accrediting agency for music and music-related disciplines.
