Pastor Penny Ellwood's eNote with a A Quick P.S. from The Resurrection United Methodist Church Blue Springs in Blue Springs, Missouri, United States for Friday, 2 October 2015
Friday, October 2, 2015,
To Resurrection Blue Springs family,
Take a quick look at what's coming up:
It was exciting to see all our Leadership Institute guests yesterday scattered in clusters of conversation throughout the narthex in Leawood.  The energy level was high as participants got to know one another and shared their experiences and insights from the keynote speakers and workshops.  Mike Ash and I led a workshop on "Creating a Passionate Worship Experience from Start to Finish."  One woman I ran into in the bathroom saw my staff nametag and stopped me to thank me for the work that Resurrection does in preparing for this event.  She said, "You don't know how important this is to those of us who come.  We get great information and ideas from all  the speakers and the Resurrection staff is so awesome in their willingness to share and help.  It inspires us to go back and work in our own ministries." "I so needed this time, she said, "Thank you!" It's humbling and pretty dang awesome to know that I get to be a part of this community that cares so deeply for the church and the other communities of faith across our nation.
We're fortunate to be able to hear one of the keynote speakers from this week's conference in worship this Sunday.  Bishop Violet Fisher will be preaching.  Bishop Fisher was elected in 2000 as the third African American female Bishop to the church and has served in many important positions within the structure of the church.  She is a highly sought after revivalist, guest speaker/preacher, lecturer, teacher, conference leader, and evangelist. You can read more about her in this bio.
Bishop Violet Fisher
Bishop Fisher’s call to ministry came at the age of 16. Though her roots were in the Methodist Episcopal Church, the affirmation for her ministry as an ordained clergy member came through The King’s Apostle Holiness Church of God. In this church, she served as National Evangelist, and was the first woman to be ordained. During these years, she also taught in the public school systems of Virginia and Maryland for twenty-two years.
Her journey brought her back to the church of her birth, and in 1988 she was ordained a deacon and in 1990 an elder in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The United Methodist Church. Bishop Fisher served St. Daniel’s UMC in Chester, PA, and Sayers Memorial UMC in Philadelphia. From 1994 to July 2000, she served as District Superintendent of the Mary McLeod Bethune District, and during her tenure on the district, was twice appointed dean of the cabinet.
In July 2000, she was elected to the Episcopacy by delegates to the Northeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. Jurisdictional delegates commented after the election:
“There is a sense of wonder and delight that a nontraditional leader was elected … She is a very enthusiastic, energetic people-person with a strong spirit and strong leadership skills … She knows the pulse of the people … God anointed her bishop.”
Reflecting on her consecration as the third African American Female Bishop in the Church, Bishop Fisher stated, “This affirmation speaks to all women, especially women of color.”
Bishop Fisher’s appointment was to the New York West Area, where she gave leadership to over eight hundred (800) churches from 2000-2008.
Within the structure of The United Methodist Church, Bishop Fisher served as President of the Northeastern Jurisdiction College of Bishops, Director and Vice President of the General Board of Global Ministries, Director of the General Board of Church and Society, General Commission on Communication, General Board of Discipleship Older Adult Ministries, Executive Committee of the World Methodist Council, and JUSTPEACE Center for Mediation and Conflict Transformation. She serves as a member of the Commission on Pan-Methodist Cooperation and Union, Holistic Africa and Hope for the Children of Africa, and remains a member of Black Methodists for Church Renewal. Bishop Fisher was the keynote speaker for the International Prayer Conference for Wesleyans in Renewal, held in Singapore in June 2004. In 1998-99, she was Dean of the Northeastern Jurisdiction School of Evangelism.
Bishop Fisher is profiled in the new book compiled by Bishop Judith Craig, The Leading Women: Stories of the First Women Bishops of The United Methodist Church. Bishop Fisher is a contributor to The African American Pulpit, where several of her sermons have been published. She is also a contributor to, The Women of Color Study Bible, The Women of Spirit Devotional and several other publications.
Awards she has received include the Martin Luther King Freedom, Philadelphia Congress Stellar Service, National Sojourner Truth Meritorious, and The United Methodist Church Denman Evangelism Award. She was named Black United Methodist Preacher of the Year for the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and has received many other awards, honors and citations.
In addition, Bishop Fisher proudly served as a missionary to Kenya and Uganda, (East Africa) for two years. She also served as a short-term missionary to Haiti, Jamaica, and the Dominican Republic. She has ministered on every continent but one.
Bishop Fisher is a graduate of Bowie State University with a Bachelor degree in education. She is also a graduate of George Washington University with a Master’s Degree in Special Education and Eastern Baptist Seminary with a Masters of Divinity. She earned her Doctorate of Divinity from Baltimore College of the Bible. In 2006 Bishop Fisher was awarded an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Letters from Centenary College, in Hackettstown, New Jersey and in 2007, she received an Honorary Doctoral Degree from Hood Theological Seminary in North Carolina.
Bishop Fisher served as Trustee to Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School, Syracuse University, and Eastern Baptist Seminary. In retirement she has served in the D. Min Mentoring program at Dayton Theological Seminary.
Bishop Fisher is a sought after revivalist, guest speaker/preacher, lecturer, teacher, conference leader, and evangelist.
She has a large extended family in the Maryland and Delaware areas to include her son, Marcus, and her sisters and brothers.
