Friday, November 25, 2015,
Happy Thanksgiving RezDowntowners,
I hope this message finds you doing well and filled with gratitude this morning. I am certainly grateful for each and every one of you. The last two days it has been fun to see so much food flow into this church for our Thanksgiving Celebration at the Healing House. Thank you for your generosity. All I can say is what a great way to spend this Thanksgiving holiday at the Healing House Hall! If you still have food you would like to contribute, please plan to drop off your food donations at 4602 Saint John Ave., KCMO between 9am – 11am. If you have questions about coordinating the drop off, please email Jennifer Rechsteiner at rex1bayless@hotmail.com for more information.
Thank you to all who have returned your commitment cards so far! If you’ve yet to turn in your commitment card, I’d like to ask you to consider going online right now to make your commitment? Simply click here to make your commitment online. Your commitments make possible the continued mission and ministry of this community. Thank you for your willingness to join us in our purpose of building Christian community in the heart of this city!
Lastly, below you’ll find several ways to get connected to the life of this church and I am excited for all the things coming up during this season of Advent. Advent is a time of anticipation and excitement surrounding God’s promises. This weekend we kick off our Advent sermon series by focusing on the Promise of Hope, of light piercing the darkness, It also happens to be our sixth anniversary. I am thrilled to celebrate with you and to anticipate together all the greater things still to be done in this city. Until then, Happy Thanksgiving!
Thank You Volunteers! A special thanks to everyone who came out to the Volunteer Celebration! We had a great time celebrating our amazing volunteers as well as welcoming new faces who are looking for ways to serve at Rez Downtown. If you weren’t able to make it, we would still love to give you a FREE t-shirt so be sure to get one at Connection Point! And as always, it’s never too late to get started volunteering in the life of Rez Downtown. Email Shannon Endicott atshannon.endicott@cor.org with any questions.
You Grabbed a JOY Box for Children at Wendell Phillips – ALL the boxes were taken! Now it’s time to fill and return them unwrapped no later than Sunday, December 13. Fill them up according to the list attached to the box. If you have questions about what to purchase (or in need of some ridiculous entertainment), go to youtu.be/ppTjDFtozI0 for some “help” from Kelly Sisney, our Director of Operations and Community Life. You can also join us the afternoon of Friday, December 18, to help spread some Christmas cheer with the kids as they receive their JOY boxes and celebrate at their holiday party! Email Jory Mick at jorylmick@gmail.com to get involved in the fun!
Advent Study with Pastor Scott – Wednesdays beginning December 2 at 7 pm, 1508 Grand Sanctuary. Join Pastor Scott as he leads this 3-week study of Advent. The season of Advent, which comes from the Latin word adventus meaning “coming” or “visit,” begins four Sundays before Christmas and ends on Christmas Eve. During Advent, we prepare for, and anticipate, the coming of Christ. We remember the longing of Jews for a Messiah and our own longing for – and need of – forgiveness, salvation and a new beginning. Come prepare your hearts and minds for this special season. Only children’s programming registration is required; to register your child, go to cor.org/downtown/adventstudy.
Family Advent Night – Make sure you register so we can save you a spot as this will be a FUN evening for children and families! Come by 1522 McGee on Tuesday, December 8, at 6 pm and enjoy time together as we have dinner, kid-centered activities and a short performance put on by Rez Downtown staff and volunteers. Everyone – from 1 month to 105 years old – is invited! To register your family and sign up for dinner, go to cor.org/downtown/FamilyAdventNight. For more information, contact Sarah.Brischle@cor.org.
Special Holiday Faithwork – Advent is here and we have a great opportunity to share in the joy of the season by serving! Our next special holiday FaithWork will be Saturday, December 5, 9 am. All you have to do is show up at the church (1522 McGee) wearing comfy clothes and we will send you out to serve in the community until lunch time. We will be throwing holiday parties all over the city, primarily in shelters that house families in transition. We will also have on-site projects for people of all ages and abilities. It will be a big day of service and an equally big day of blessings!
SWAT Brunch Club will meet next on Sunday, December 6, at 12:30 pm at the Majestic Steakhouse, 931 Broadway, KCMO. Please RSVP by Dec. 2, to James Burcalow atjmburca@aol.com or at 913-775-2168.
Boomers To Step Back in Time! Actually, back to their childhood and play marbles in a Tour of the Moon Marble Factory and Gift Shop on Saturday, December 12, 2015. The tour admission is $7 each. Tour limited to twenty. Lunch at Papa Bob’s Barbeque at 1:30pm, followed by the tour from 3 – 4 pm.
