Dear Resurrection Family,
I’m excited about this weekend for a couple of reasons! I’m looking forward to watching the next three World Series Games tonight, tomorrow night and Sunday night. If you typically worship on Saturday or Sunday night join us and wear your Royals’ gear before heading out to watch the games.
I’m particularly excited because this weekend the Rev. Dr. James Forbes will preach. I only know Dr. Forbes by reputation. I attended the Riverside Church years ago to hear him, but he was out of the pulpit that weekend. Dr. Forbes was ranked by Newsweek and Ebony magazines as one of the 12 most effective preachers in the English-speaking world. He was professor of preaching at both Auburn Theological Seminary and Union Theological Seminary and pastored the Riverside Church in New York City. LaVon and I will take Dr. Forbes and his wife to supper tonight after he arrives in KC, and we look forward to hearing him preach Saturday night.
By the way, don’t forget to set your clocks back on Saturday night when you head to bed. This weekend we “fall back” from Daylight Savings Time!
Our Coffee with the Pastor, scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 3, on the Leawood campus has been postponed. We’ll let you know when it is rescheduled. If you are interested in learning about membership at Resurrection and joining our congregation, watch the eNote and worship bulletin for the upcoming Coffee with the Pastor dates.
Next week I’ll kick off a new sermon series called “Your Money & Your Life” – every few years we look at the struggles we have with money, how those struggles can rob us of life, and how the right habits, practices and disciplines can give life. I’ll interview expert financial planners and examine the very relevant wisdom the Bible offers on our relationship with money. I want to encourage you, if you have teens, to bring them to worship during this series. Whether you are struggle with having enough money, or you have more than enough but can’t figure out where it all goes, you’ll find important and relevant insights in this series.
Closely related to this, on Monday, November 2 at 7:00 pm we’re hosting a Retired Inspired event here at Resurrection Leawood. Chris Hogan is the speaker – Dave Romsey calls him, “America’s trusted voice on retirement.” Learn how to dump debt, build a budget that works, and understand investing through information along with practical steps you can take right now. Register here.
Next weekend (November 7/8) we’ll honor all Resurrection Veterans in worship in recognition of Veteran’s Day. Vets and active duty personnel, wear your uniform if you can and plan on joining us for worship. On Sunday night, November 8, at 6:30 pm we’re hosting a Veteran’s Day Dinner and we’ll hear from Retired Air Force Colonel Kimberly Olson, founder of Grace Under Fire, an organization assisting female veterans. The event is free but you must sign up – click here to do so.
I’d end with something that struck me watching the Royals play on Wednesday night. Johnny Cueto pitched an amazing game that night. As you may know, he was acquired by the Royals in July of this year. He threw a shutout in his first game as a Royal, but then struggled for much of the season. In the playoffs he struggled his first outing, had a great game his second outing, then gave up 8 runs in his third outing. After that game everywhere I turned people were ready to throw in the towel on Johnny Cueto. But he didn’t give up, and Ned Yost didn’t give up on him. On Wednesday night he pitched all nine innings and only gave up one run and two hits. As the game started I heard people around me worried about our pitcher. It ended with 40,000 fans changing, "Cueto, Cueto, Cueto."
When I speak on leadership across the country one of the lessons I teach is that people who have an impact never give up in the face of disappointment, adversity or defeat. They just keep going. John Wesley, Methodism’s founder, was harassed, humiliated, mocked, and ridiculed over and over again, but he refused to give up, and, as a result, he changed the world. It takes a little faith, hard work, and perseverance. Don’t give up.
I hope you can join us for worship this weekend! Wear your Royals gear for the last time in worship this weekend (actually, you can wear it whenever you want, but I’m thinking most of us will retire our t-shirts until the Spring!).
Blessings!
