"The Heart of the Family by Norma Lee Hyde for Tuesday, June 2017 - Deuteronomy 6:1-15
Deuteronomy 6:1 “Now this is the mitzvah, the laws and rulings which Adonai your God ordered me to teach you for you to obey in the land you are crossing over to possess, 2 so that you will fear Adonai your God and observe all his regulations and mitzvot that I am giving you — you, your child and your grandchild — as long as you live, and so that you will have long life. 3 Therefore listen, Isra’el, and take care to obey, so that things will go well with you, and so that you will increase greatly, as Adonai, the God of your ancestors, promised you by giving you a land flowing with milk and honey.
(A:vi, S: v) 4 “Sh’ma, Yisra’el! Adonai Eloheinu, Adonai echad [Hear, Isra’el! Adonai our God, Adonai is one]; 5 and you are to love Adonai your God with all your heart, all your being and all your resources. 6 These words, which I am ordering you today, are to be on your heart; 7 and you are to teach them carefully to your children. You are to talk about them when you sit at home, when you are traveling on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 8 Tie them on your hand as a sign, put them at the front of a headband around your forehead, 9 and write them on the door-frames of your house and on your gates.
(S: vi) 10 “When Adonai your God has brought you into the land he swore to your ancestors Avraham, Yitz’chak and Ya‘akov that he would give you — cities great and prosperous, which you didn’t build; 11 houses full of all sorts of good things, which you didn’t fill; water cisterns dug out, which you didn’t dig; vineyards and olive trees, which you didn’t plant — and you have eaten your fill; 12 then be careful not to forget Adonai, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, where you lived as slaves. 13 You are to fear Adonai your God, serve him and swear by his name. 14 You are not to follow other gods, chosen from the gods of the peoples around you; 15 because Adonai, your God, who is here with you, is a jealous God. If you do, the anger of Adonai your God will flare up against you and he will destroy you from the face of the earth.
-------
When talking to young children, we sometimes repeat ourselves numerous times, finally in exasperation blurting out, “Are you listening?” Moses, in Deuteronomy 6, addresses a new generation of Israelites. He was clearly speaking not for himself, but he was the vessel through whom God was speaking. God’s message to the people was that He desired their respect for His greatness and holiness: that reverent awe the Bible often describes as the “fear of God.” This regard for God would lead the Israelites from wonder and commitment to worship and delight. They would come to know God as their Father.
Through Moses they not only heard God’s commandment to them, but that they must communicate (talk) to their families and “tell the story” of God’s faithfulness over and over again. Why? So that the blessings of obedience to the Word of the Lord would be carried forward from generation to generation.
Making God’s Word the heart of our families, “telling the story,” gives assurance that His promises and belief in them will continue in new generations. Are you listening? If so you will find these blessings, and through your obedience the souls of generations unborn may be satisfied.
"Rise Up, O Church of God" by William P. Merrill
1. Rise up, O Church of God!
Have done with lesser things;
Give heart and mind and soul and strength
To serve the King of kings.
2. Rise up, O Church of God!
His kingdom tarries long;
Bring in the day of brotherhood
And end the night of wrong.
3. Rise up, O sons of God!
The Church for you doth wait,
Her strength unequal to her task,
Rise up, and make her great!
4. Lift high the cross of Christ!
Tread where His feet have trod;
As foll'wers of the Son of Man,
Rise up, O Church of God!
Thought for Today:
Young lions can be needy, they can go hungry,
but those who seek Adonai lack nothing good.
Come, children, listen to me;
I will teach you the fear of Adonai.[Psalm 34:11]
Please pray:
That many people in Guinea-Bissau will come to know Yeshua the Messiah and receive the fullness of the ruach HaKodesh.
That the elected General Superintedents, Dr.Filimao Chambo and Dr. Carla Sundberg, will receive a new and refreshing power and strength from the Ruach HaKodesh in their new role for our Church and Yahweh.
