The Upper Room Daily Devotional in San Diego, California, United States "Letting Go" for Wednesday, 28 June 2017 - Read Matthew 11:28-30-------
Matthew 11:28 “Come to me, all of you who are struggling and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.[Matthew 11:29 Jeremiah 6:16] 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Do not worry about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God[Philippians 4:6 (NRSV)]
In coastal Louisiana, one popular way we catch blue crab is to tie a piece of meat — often a chicken neck — on a long string and throw the bait out from the shore. When we feel a crab tugging on the bait, we slowly start pulling the line the 15 or 20 feet to the bank. The crabs tenaciously hold on to the bait until they are dragged over a net in the shallow water and scooped up. This method works consistently, because the crabs don’t know when it is in their best interest to let go.
People can be like that too. Holding on to something — especially a heavy burden — requires as much effort as the crabs bumping along the bottom of the ocean.
As humans, sometimes we hold on to our problems by trying to solve them ourselves. We don’t look at the big picture, and we forget the wisdom of letting go. Scripture tells us to acknowledge our powerlessness and fully turn our problems over to God, but to be able to do that we have to be willing to let go of them. It is then that God sends us the peace that surpasses all understanding and guides us through our crisis.

Thought for the Day: What problem can I turn over to God today?
Prayer: Dear Lord, help us to trust that it is better for us to put our problems in your hands than to keep them in ours. Amen.
Prayer focus: Someone learning to let go
