As a stay-at-home dad, his duties have expanded this year to include hosting in-home therapy sessions several days a week, contacting agencies with questions and concerns, and implementing strategies we have learned from Finley’s therapists. He has always been an incredible father to Finley and his older brother, Gavin, but this year, he has proven time and again just how much he is willing to do for our family. However, the special surprise he had for Finley recently tops the list as my favorite.

He loves the Christmas tree and all the lights, gets excited every time we watch a Christmas movie, and smiles from ear to ear when we listen to Christmas music. My favorite, however, is when he says, “Ho ho ho!” every time he spies Santa, even though his only other consistent words are “no,” “go,” and “bye bye.” We thought that his love for Santa would result in a sweet moment when he met him at an area mall recently, but although Santa was kind and patient, Finley was still scared to get close to him (as many kids his age are) and overwhelmed by the busy mall atmosphere that day, and so his visit resulted in tears. We didn’t push him or try to force him to sit on Santa’s lap, and as we walked away, he yelled “Ho ho ho!” over my shoulder.
A few days ago, David told me he had arranged a little surprise for Finley for that evening. My sweet husband had rented a Santa suit so that Finley could experience meeting Santa on his own terms that evening. Even though my husband does not remotely resemble Santa—even in a costume—the result of his surprise will forever be one of my favorite moments, both as Finley’s mother and David’s wife.

My Son Was Scared of the Mall Santa, So My Husband Did This

When our youngest son, Finley, was diagnosed with autism in March, I knew my relationship with my husband might change. Although Finley was still the same two-year-old we had arrived with that day, I knew that his official diagnosis ushered in a new period of our lives that would include therapy and insurance battles alongside the delays, meltdowns, and sensory issues we were already dealing with together. Although Finley was a little apprehensive at first and only watched from the couch, seeing his big brother, Gavin (who was privy to the secret) play with Santa and snuggle in his lap made him curious, rather than frightened. Before long, he began venturing closer and closer to Santa, and when Santa gently picked him up, the result was smiles instead of tears. He sat in Santa’s lap, played with him on the couch, and squealed through tickle fights with him. I snapped a few photos, Santa said his goodbyes, and I cried tears of happiness in my husband’s arms once the suit had been packed up to return to the costume rental facility. 
Finley’s reaction to Santa during our mall visit might not have had anything to do with his autism at all. It might very well have been the result of being a toddler instead, and although we have since learned of a couple of autism-friendly Santa events in our area, David simply wanted to do something special for our little boy. Dressing as Santa and allowing Finley to experience a Santa visit in a completely comfortable environment resulted in a priceless moment for our family.
There are many elements of our lives that are definitely made more stressful as a result of Finley’s autism, but having someone like David to help us all through them has made life infinitely sweeter. 
Autism Speaks partnered with Simon Malls this holiday season to have caring Santa events at 120 malls around the counry!

The following tips can help families affected by autism to prevent meltdowns, getting lost, and accidents.
Do Less! Avoid stress by making decisions about what you do or don’t do based on what is best for your family rather than on the expectations of others. Simplify holiday meals, gift-giving, and social gatherings. Instead of hurrying, slow down – drive more carefully, take more time for transitions, and prepare everyone.
Get Ready. Before you leave home, review the plan of what is going to happen and not happen in terms that make sense for your family, anticipating potential temptations and triggers. Be realistic about crowded stores, impatient shoppers, distracted drivers, and long lines.
For verbal children, you might say: “Today we are going to visit 3 new stores at the Great Big Mall to get presents and look at the decorations. We might have to park far away if the parking lot is full. Some drivers are not paying good attention so we will hold hands. If there are long lines and busy people, we will be patient and wait. We can tell stories while we are waiting. We are NOT going to visit the pet store today to look at the kittens but we can do that next month when things are quieter. We are NOT going to visit the ice cream store today but we can have a cookie when we get home. We are NOT going to buy presents for ourselves today but we can ‘bookmark’ in our minds if there is a present you might like to have someday. There will be lots of lights and noises. It will be interesting and fun. We will Stay Together and Check First before we change our plan.”
For less verbal children, review key safety rules in simple terms: Stay Together, Check First, Stop, and Wait.
If a family member with special needs requires constant supervision, be sure to have handoffs clear about who is responsible when. For example, “While I am trying on clothes, Maria will stay with Josephine and we will agree on a fun place to wait, such as the mirrors.”
Review the safety plan in case someone gets separated or lost. Have your mobile phone number on your child’s arm or a card. Take a photo with your cell phone. Practice how to wait and how to ask for help.
Remind, Watch, Intervene, and Redirect. When you arrive, review the plan or ask your child to repeat this back to you. At each new location, review what to do in case you get lost or separated – where to wait, who to ask for help, etc.
Split your attention so you can stay aware of what your children are doing all the time. Keep them next to you to avoid trouble. Remember that a child can get hurt, disappear, or do something unsafe in an instant. Be very consistent in intervening to stop unsafe behavior.
If something unexpected happens, stick with your plan unless it is an emergency. For example, if you run into a friend, avoid socializing unless that was part of your plan. Adult socializing can cause kids to get tired out and frustrated and to feel as if the plan isn’t actually real. Instead, you can keep moving and say, “It’s so nice to see you. I can’t stop to chat right now because I promised Christopher that we would stick with our shopping plan. Have a great day!”
Redirect wishes with compassion and humor. For example if a child is tired, you might sit on a bench and watch for a few minutes. Or you might say, “I wish I were an elephant and could carry everyone.”
Celebrate! At the end of each trip, review what went right. Congratulate family members on what they did to make this trip fun. Give a reward for a job well done! If something went wrong, discuss this at a different time, before you go out again. Remember that things don’t have to be perfect to be great!

CC Soap House
Chase Chancellor is a pretty easy going teenager who happens to have autism. For some years his family has been looking for some activity that Chase could/would do with purpose and vocational possibilities. Fortunately, in his family and consumer science class, he got involved in making soap. He has always enjoyed pouring, mixing, and melting things, all activities involved in making soap. We were quite surprised at some of the first bars he made and brought home. One of his teachers (thanks Heather Fulmer) got us started on the path and after some months of experimenting with different methods and ingredients, CC Soap House is up and running. He uses the money he makes to buy his materials (no free rides here) and puts back what is left for something special.

The In-Focus Project was developed so that individuals with autism with an interest in the arts could take photographs throughout the community and provide neurotypical viewers with a small window of what they see as important in their world. This program gives the participants the resources and supports that they need to become competent visual artists. The In-Focus Project photographers have a voice through these photos, and thereby, whether verbal and non-verbal, they each gain a chance to tell their stories in photographs.

Nick's Art Project
Nick's Art Project was founded in 2010 by Nicholas Gammicchia as a means of giving back to his community. As a young child, he was diagnosed with severe autism. Various interventions assisted him over the years, however the two that open doors for him were art and music therapy. His early self-portrait "Smile" is used as the trademark piece by the organization because it signifies an early breakthrough for him to communicating his feelings to others in the only way possible at that time, through his drawing and painting. As an aspiring artist, Nicholas realized he could use his passion to help others. Today Nicholas is doing well, is in college and studying to be an illustrator within the film industry. He and his brother have developed this project to allow for proceeds from sales and contributions to go toward providing scholarship opportunities for others to obtain art and music therapy. Nicholas designs all of the products, prints and develops the materials utilized for the note cards featured on this site as well as other products currently in development. He has a micro-enterprise where he has learned to be a self-determined business minded individual who hopes to be an inspiration to others.
