Daily Devotional
The Daily Devotional from The Upper Room in Nashville Tennessee United States for Friday, 19 January 2018 "Flooded with Light" by Margie J. Harding (Maryland) Ephesians 1:15-23
Paul wrote, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which [God] has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people.” (Ephesians 1:18 (NIV))
Rainy days give me a slow, sleepy kind of feeling. While I usually enjoy these days, sometimes even when I seem to have no reason to feel sad, I feel dreary. Then the sun peeks out, and suddenly I feel warm and cheerful again. The light from the sun honestly changes my mood. The New Living Translation of the Bible says, “I pray that your hearts will be flooded with light,” instead of using enlightened in the verse from Ephesians above.
When our hearts are flooded with God’s light through scripture, we can feel the warmth and peace God offers. God loves us and cares for us all the days of our lives. Just as the sun’s light changed my mood from dreary to happy, so scripture can change our minds and hearts from cloudy and uncertain to confident in God’s presence and peace. No matter what the day may bring, God’s light brightens our lives.

O God, illumine our minds and hearts with your words so that we may gain a better understanding of you and your will for our lives. Amen.

TODAY'S READING: Ephesians 1:15-23
Ephesians 1:15 For this reason, ever since I heard about your trust in the Lord Yeshua and your love for all God’s people, 16 I have not stopped giving thanks for you. In my prayers I keep asking 17 the God of our Lord Yeshua the Messiah, the glorious Father, to give you a spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you will have full knowledge of him. 18 I pray that he will give light to the eyes of your hearts, so that you will understand the hope to which he has called you, what rich glories there are in the inheritance he has promised his people, 19 and how surpassingly great is his power working in us who trust him. It works with the same mighty strength he used 20 when he worked in the Messiah to raise him from the dead and seat him at his right hand in heaven, 21 far above every ruler, authority, power, dominion or any other name that can be named either in the ‘olam hazeh or in the ‘olam haba. 22 Also, he has put all things under his feet[Ephesians 1:22 Psalm 8:7(6)] and made him head over everything for the Messianic Community, 23 which is his body, the full expression of him who fills all creation.
