Greetings, RezDowntowners!
I hope this message finds you well. On the last weekend of 2017, I had the opportunity to preach live a New Year's Message focusing on how I think God might be calling us to live into 2018. As a part of that message I challenged us to live like Christ so that we might be known as people who long to love, serve, care for and be #withKC the same way that God (at Christmas) comes to be with us, to love us and never leave us. In that, one of the things I urged everyone in the congregation to consider is to commit #18in18. I have the dream that everyone who calls Resurrection Downtown their church home would commit to at least 18 hours of Christ-like service in 2018. The cumulative impact of this on our city and throughout our community would be amazing. Our first opportunity to live into this vision is happening tomorrow morning at our Serve Saturday. Invite a friend, coworker or neighbor, and join us tomorrow morning at 9am at 1522 McGee. We'll gather together in the sanctuary for coffee and some conversation, only to head out in mission and service all throughout the city. After a full morning outside the walls of the church, we'll then invite everybody back to the church to stay for a huge celebratory lunch at noon. At this Mission Celebration, we'll offer a taste of downtown, hand out #withKC t-shirts to those who’ve not yet received one, celebrate 2017 and create a vision for the year ahead in mission. It is going to be a great Saturday. I hope you'll join us.
On Wednesday of this past week, we had over 75 people show up to gather together at the Hindu Temple and KC Cultural Center. This was our first week of our study on Christianity and World Religions. It was a phenomenal first event with great attendance. I want to keep the momentum going. This weekend in worship we'll be continuing in our sermon series by focusing on Buddhism, and then, as we'll be doing each week of this series, on Wednesday night (January 24th at 6:30pm) we'll be diving deeper by taking another field trip over to the Rime Buddhist Center and Monastery located at 700 W. Pennway in KCMO. I hope you'll invite friends to join you in worship this weekend and then again to our corresponding study on Wednesday night.
Lastly, if you've been worshiping with us at Resurrection Downtown for awhile and have been wondering about taking steps in your faith, toward membership or deeper involvement. I'd love for you to join me this Sunday afternoon at 1:30pm for our Coffee with the Pastors. At CWP, you can learn about the history of the church, what it means to be a United Methodist and our expectations for becoming a member of Church of the Resurrection. For more information or to register for childcare, contact Shannon.Endicott@cor.org!
I am so grateful to serve Christ alongside each of you at Resurrection Downtown. It is privilege knowing that together we are building Christian community in the heart of this city where non-religious and nominally religious people are becoming deeply committed. I cannot wait to see where God leads us into the future and I cannot wait to see you this weekend in worship, as well as at our first Serve Saturday of the year!!!
Grace and Peace,
Pastor Scott
