From Pastor Molly: In This Together
Today, again, I was reminded of how many people play really important parts in making "church" happen.
(I'm not just saying this because Ernie took a day off today, though his absence certainly makes me aware of how much he does as our Administrative Assistant. I'm totally blaming any errors in this eNews on his absence...)
Samantha Kaiser spent extra time this week, preparing year-end giving statements for mailing, and Leila Grantz was here, too, doing their normal volunteer work as financial secretaries. Today, the Naomi Circle and others from UMW gave generously in hosting the reception for Marv Davison's funeral service--handling cookies, coffee and even some first aid. Our excellent staff has been taking care of things, from visitors in need of assistance to campus security cameras. Volunteers came and went all day yesterday to host Shared Bread. This Sunday, Rev. Nicole Reilley will be with us, to preach the sermon. And there's so many more people who did other things, too.
I am so grateful to share all this work with so many people. The number and variety of tasks that are a part of being the church require many hands, and varied skills. And the work of the church doesn't stop at our church walls! We all get to share in the work of the church every time we extend care to our neighbors, speak up for justice, give generously, or work for the sake of others. Every time we live out our faith in what we do or say, we are doing the work of Christ's church.
So: thank you for sharing the load. I believe that you have meaningful, useful gifts to use in the beautiful work we share, of living out the love of God.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
I'm very pleased that we get to welcome Rev. Nicole Reilley as our preacher this Sunday. Rev. Nicole serves as our Director of New Ministries for the California-Pacific Annual Conference of the UMC, and is officially keeps her membership connection to our congregation, though her work often takes her to congregations through the region. She served as Interim Pastor here in 2012, and continues to share her gifts with us in many ways! It's a treat to me to get to hear her preach on Sunday, and share worship leadership.
Sunday, January 21:
Do You Have Questions for God?
"Does God Have a Plan for Your Life?"
Rev. Nicole Reilley, preaching
John 1:29-42
John 1:29 The next day, Yochanan saw Yeshua coming toward him and said, “Look! God’s lamb! The one who is taking away the sin of the world! 30 This is the man I was talking about when I said, ‘After me is coming someone who has come to rank above me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I myself did not know who he was, but the reason I came immersing with water was so that he might be made known to Isra’el.” 32 Then Yochanan gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit coming down from heaven like a dove, and remaining on him. 33 I myself did not know who he was, but the one who sent me to immerse in water said to me, ‘The one on whom you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who immerses in the Ruach HaKodesh.’ 34 And I have seen and borne witness that this is the Son of God.”
35 The next day, Yochanan was again standing with two of his talmidim. 36 On seeing Yeshua walking by, he said, “Look! God’s lamb!” 37 His two talmidim heard him speaking, and they followed Yeshua. 38 Yeshua turned and saw them following him, and he asked them, “What are you looking for?” They said to him, “Rabbi!” (which means “Teacher!”) “Where are you staying?” 39 He said to them, “Come and see.” So they went and saw where he was staying, and remained with him the rest of the day — it was about four o’clock in the afternoon. 40 One of the two who had heard Yochanan and had followed Yeshua was Andrew the brother of Shim‘on Kefa.
41 The first thing he did was to find his brother Shim‘on and tell him, “We’ve found the Mashiach!” (The word means “one who has been anointed.”) 42 He took him to Yeshua. Looking at him, Yeshua said, “You are Shim‘on Bar-Yochanan; you will be known as Kefa.” (The name means “rock.”)
John Wesley’s Explanatory Notes
John 1:29-42
Verse 29
[29] The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.
He seeth Jesus coming and saith, Behold the Lamb — Innocent; to be offered up; prophesied of by Isaiah, Isaiah 53:7, typified by the paschal lamb, and by the daily sacrifice: The Lamb of God - Whom God gave, approves, accepts of; who taketh away - Atoneth for; the sin - That is, all the sins: of the world - Of all mankind. Sin and the world are of equal extent.
Verse 31
[31] And I knew him not: but that he should be made manifest to Israel, therefore am I come baptizing with water.
I knew him not — Till he came to be baptized. How surprising is this; considering how nearly they were related, and how remarkable the conception and birth of both had been. But there was a peculiar providence visible in our Saviour's living, from his infancy to his baptism, at Nazareth: John all the time living the life of a hermit in the deserts of Judea, Luke 1:80, ninety or more miles from Nazareth: hereby that acquaintance was prevented which might have made John's testimony of Christ suspected.
Verse 34
[34] And I saw, and bare record that this is the Son of God.
I saw it — That is, the Spirit so descending and abiding on him.
And testified — From that time.
Verse 37
[37] And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
They followed Jesus — They walked after him, but had not the courage to speak to him.
Verse 41
[41] He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
He first findeth his own brother Simon — Probably both of them sought him: Which is, being interpreted, the Christ - This the evangelist adds, as likewise those words in John 1:38, that is, being interpreted, Master.
Verse 42
[42] And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.
Jesus said, Thou art Simon, the son of Jonah — As none had told our Lord these names, this could not but strike Peter.
Cephas, which is Peter — Moaning the same in Syriac which Peter does in Greek, namely, a rock.

3. La plaine, la plaine, la plaine
N'aura plus de frontière
La terre, la terre, verra notre domaine
Que j'aime, que j'aime
Ce vieux chariot qui tremble
Qui tremble, qui tremble
Si tu veux de moi
De ma vie et de mon fol amour
Le long des torrents et des bois
Au cœur des dangers et des joies
Alors dis-le moi, je pars avec toi

1. Trolley, Trolley, if you want me
To accompany you after days
Let me come near you
On the big wooden cart and canvas
We will go
On the side where we will see the day
In the first reflections of the sky
Before the heat of the sun
Under the last star
2. The plain, the plain, the plain
Will no longer have borders
The earth, the earth, will be our domain
What I like, that I like
This old trolley
Who's pitching, pitching
If you want me
To sleep on your side always
Summer under the silver moon
Winter in the snow and the wind
So tell me, I'm leaving with you
3. The plain, the plain, the plain
Will no longer have borders
The earth, the earth, will see our domain
What I like, that I like
This old shaking trolley
Who trembles, who trembles
If you want me
Of my life and my crazy love
Along the streams and the woods
At the heart of the dangers and joys
So tell me, I'm leaving with you

Last Sunday we heard a most beautiful rendition of "All I want Is You, Lord" by our long time member Pauline Tamale, soprano and I must add that her beautiful voice has never sounded better. She, of course, is part of the extended Tuuholoaki family, from the Island Country of Tonga and when they sing together or separately, we take special notice. Jonathan and his wife, Ofa, are our Lay leaders, often busy visiting families, attending Annual Conference and leading us as responsible Lay Leaders for our church.

Last week's bulletin reported that we now have 58 pledges for 2018 and I must say, as I look around at our Sunday Congregation that by now we should have 158 pledges. Our financial people need to know about those who give regularly, whether it's small or large so they can plan our year's income and expenditures. How else can they operate such a fine church? If you give regularly, modest or generously, please put it in writing so our financial planning is backed soundly.
I ran into Ernie Valenzuela, wife and friends at Old Tony's on the Redondo Beach Pier recently and it was fun knowing that he did something once in awhile away from our church. One gets the impression that every bit of his days are spent working to make things hum around our church building.
Recently I watched as our custodian, Arnie Sachs helped a woman of our congregation carry things from her car to the rummage sale store room downstairs below the choir room and I thought, is there anything that man doesn't do for our people in so many ways from time to time.

Chris Tomlin was born in Texas in 1972 and learned to play guitar by playing along with Willy Nelson recordings. He has become one of the dominant forces in contemporary Christian music, and in 2012 CCLI announced that his songs were played 3 million times in churches that year. His 2013 album Burning Lights debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, only the fourth Christian album ever to open at No. 1, and he was pronounced the most sung songwriter in the world that year. The song Take My Life is his take on the old hymn (found at #399 in our hymnal) Take My Life and Let It Be, with the original words written in 1873 by Frances Havergal. It was released in 2004 on the album Hymns Ancient and Modern, which was recorded live at the Passion Conference 2003. ...

One of the more engaging Whoopi Goldberg movies was "Sister Act", where she played a lounge singer that was a witness to a murder. The police hid her from the bad guys by stashing her in a convent, where she made waves by taking over and modernizing the choir of nuns. The final song from this movie is a favorite of many musicians, as it takes an old hit from the 60's - I Will Follow Him - and makes it a bit classier. It was written by Franck Pourcel and Paul Mauriat, with English lyrics by Norman Gimbel. Originally recorded by Franck Pourcel as an instrumental in 1961, it was recorded with French lyrics by Petula Clark in 1962, which earned her a gold record. It was the 1963 English version, recorded by Little Peggy March, who was 15 at the time, that the song really earned its wings. It reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on April 27, 1963, as well as #1 in Canada, Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, South Africa, Uruguay and New Zealand, making her the youngest female artist to have a chart-topping single.
Dan Schutte is one of the most renowned of the contemporary composers in the Catholic world and is one of the founding members of the St. Louis Jesuits, who popularized a contemporary style of church music set to sacred texts sung in English. This was a result of the Second Vatican Council of the early 1960's (also known as Vatican II), which revamped and reformed the Catholic liturgy in an effort to bring it closer to the people (before that, the mass was sung in Latin and the priest kept his back to the congregation throughout). He is based in San Francisco, has written over 120 popular hymns and mass settings, and continues to be one of the most influential figures in the world of contemporary Catholic liturgical music. His most famous composition is Here I Am, Lord, based on texts from Isaiah and Samuel. Despite its Catholic origins, it is found in most Protestant hymnals and has been translated into over 20 different languages. In 2008, a survey conducted by the United Methodist Church found it to be 2nd favorite after Amazing Grace.
Stars Go Dim is a pop-rock band that began in 2008 as a side project of the Christian band Pillar. They released their first independent album in 2009 called Love Gone Mad, then another in 2011 called Between Here And Now. In 2015 they signed their first major studio contract with Fervent Records and released their first major studio album titled Stars Go Dim. The primary single from this album is You Are Loved. Co-founder/songwriter Joey Avalos stated "We just love to write songs that make you want to sing along."

"Take My Life" by Chris Tomlin
Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee
Take my moments and my days
Let them flow in ceaseless praise
Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love
Take my feet and let them be swift and beautiful for Thee
Take my voice and let me sing always, only, for my King
Take my lips and let them be filled with messages from Thee
Take my silver and my gold, not a mite would I withhold
Take my intellect and use every power as You choose
Here am I, (here I am)
All of me, (all of me)
Take my life, (take my life)
It's all for Thee, (it's all for Thee)
Take my will and make it Thine
It shall be no longer mine
Take my heart, it is Thine own
It shall be Thy royal throne
Take my love, my Lord
I pour at Your feet its treasure store
Take my self and I will be ever, only, all for Thee
Take my self and I will be ever, only, all for Thee
"Here I Am, Lord" by Dan Schutte
1. I, the Lord of sea and sky
I have heard my people cry
All who dwell in dark and sin
My hand will save
Chorus: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart
2. I, who made the stars of night
I will make their darkness bright
Who will bear my light to them?
Whom shall I send?
Chorus: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart
3. I, the Lord of snow and rain
I have borne my people"s pain
I have wept for love of them
They turn away
Chorus: Here I am, Lord. Is it I, Lord?
I have heard you calling in the night
I will go, Lord, if you lead me
I will hold your people in my heart
"You Are Loved" by Jeff Sojka / Josh Zegan / Christopher Cleveland / Kyle Williams
We hide pain in the weirdest places
Broken souls with smiling faces
Fighting for surrender
For now and the after, yeah
Just look around and you'll see that people
Are scared to say how they really feel
Oh, we all need a little honesty
You are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; and know you are loved
When it feels like something's missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up, know you are loved
Just look up, know you are loved
We're not made to be superheroes
A light not expected
But not quite perfected yet
Look up; see the sun is shining
There's hope on a new horizon
Calling you, it's calling
You are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; and know you are loved
When it feels like something's missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up, know you are loved
Just look up, know you are loved
You, don't have to prove yourself
Don't try to be someone else
You don't have to prove yourself
Don't try to be someone else
You are loved
Just look up; you are loved
Just look up; you are loved
Just look up; you are loved, just look up
You are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; and know you are loved
When it feels like something's missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up, know you are loved
Just look up, know you are loved
If your heart's in a thousand pieces
If you're lost and you're far from reason
Just look up; know you are loved
Just look up; and know you are loved
If it feels like something's missing
If it hurts but you can't find healing
Just look up, know you are loved
Just look up, know you are loved
