Tillerson Announces Minority Hiring Initiative at State
Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Friday that he will launch a new initiative to improve diversity in the foreign service, including a requirement that at least one minority candidate be considered for all ambassadorial positions. Tillerson made the announcement during a speech to agency interns and fellows, in which he noted the significant gap between the racial makeup of State and the American population. West Point Dedicates Barracks to Ostracized Black Cadet, Tuskegee Airman
Gen. Benjamin O. Davis Jr. eventually became a Tuskegee Airman and the Air Force’s first black general, but when he was just a cadet in 1932 at the United States Military Academy, no one wanted to be his roommate, let alone be his friend, or even speak to him unless absolutely necessary. Now, West Point’s newest barracks, which opened with a ribbon-cutting ceremony Friday on the New York campus, is named after the trailblazer who once described himself as “an invisible man.” [From Army Times]

Congressional Gold Medal Presentation to WWII Filipino Veterans Planned for October
Plans are underway for a national celebration honoring Filipino World War II Veterans, whose service and sacrifice have been finally recognized by the U.S. with the passage last year of the Filipino Veterans of World War II Congressional Gold Medal Act of 2015, which is now enshrined as Public Law 114-265.
