Sunday's Sermon & Scripture:
"A Place at the Table"
John 10:11-18
Scripture Text:
John 10:
11 “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 12 The hired hand, since he isn’t a shepherd and the sheep aren’t his own, sees the wolf coming, abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf drags them off and scatters them. 13 The hired worker behaves like this because that’s all he is, a hired worker; so it doesn’t matter to him what happens to the sheep. 14 I am the good shepherd; I know my own, and my own know me — 15 just as the Father knows me, and I know the Father — and I lay down my life on behalf of the sheep. 16 Also I have other sheep which are not from this pen; I need to bring them, and they will hear my voice; and there will be one flock, one shepherd.
17 “This is why the Father loves me: because I lay down my life — in order to take it up again! 18 No one takes it away from me; on the contrary, I lay it down of my own free will. I have the power to lay it down, and I have the power to take it up again. This is what my Father commanded me to do.”
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary for
John 10:11-18
Verse 12
[12] But he that is an hireling, and not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, seeth the wolf coming, and leaveth the sheep, and fleeth: and the wolf catcheth them, and scattereth the sheep.
But the hireling — It is not the bare receiving hire, which denominates a man a hireling: (for the labourer is worthy of his hire; Jesus Christ himself being the Judge: yea, and the Lord hath ordained, that they who preach the Gospel, should live of the Gospel:) but the loving hire: the loving the hire more than the work: the working for the sake of the hire. He is a hireling, who would not work, were it not for the hire; to whom this is the great (if not only) motive of working. O God! If a man who works only for hire is such a wretch, a mere thief and a robber, what is he who continually takes the hire, and yet does not work at all? The wolf - signifies any enemy who, by force or fraud, attacks the Christian's faith, liberty, or life.
So the wolf seizeth and scattereth the flock — He seizeth some, and scattereth the rest; the two ways of hurting the flock of Christ.
Verse 13
[13] The hireling fleeth, because he is an hireling, and careth not for the sheep.
The hireling fleeth because he is a hireling — Because he loves the hire, not the sheep.
Verse 14
[14] I am the good shepherd, and know my sheep, and am known of mine.
I know my sheep — With a tender regard and special care: and am known of mine - With a holy confidence and affection.
Verse 15
[15] As the Father knoweth me, even so know I the Father: and I lay down my life for the sheep.
As the Father knoweth me, and I know the Father — With such a knowledge as implies an inexpressible union: and I lay down my life - Speaking of the present time. For his whole life was only a going unto death.
Verse 16
[16] And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold: them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd.
I have also other sheep — Which he foreknew; which are not of this fold - Not of the Jewish Church or nation, but Gentiles.
I must bring them likewise — Into my Church, the general assembly of those whose names are written in heaven.
And there shall be one flock — (Not one fold, a plain false print) no corrupt or divided flocks remaining.
And one shepherd — Who laid down his life for the sheep, and will leave no hireling among them. The unity both of the flock and the shepherd shall he completed in its season. The shepherd shall bring all into one flock: and the whole flock shall hear the one shepherd.
Verse 17
[17] Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life, that I might take it again.
I lay down my life that I may take it again — I cheerfully die to expiate the sins of men, to the end I may rise again for their justification.
Verse 18
[18] No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. This commandment have I received of my Father.
I lay it down of myself — By my own free act and deed.
I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again — I have an original power and right of myself, both to lay it down as a ransom, and to take it again, after full satisfaction is made, for the sins of the whole world.
This commission have I received of my Father — Which I readily execute. He chiefly spoke of the Father, before his suffering: of his own glory, after it. Our Lord's receiving this commission as mediator is not to be considered as the ground of his power to lay down and resume his life. For this he had in him self, as having an original right to dispose thereof, antecedent to the Father's commission. But this commission was the reason why he thus used his power in laying down his life. He did it in obedience to his Father.
Sermon Story "Being Protected" by Gary Lee Parker for Sunday, 26 April 2015 with Scripture Text John 10:11-18
I love the way that Pastor Molly describes that there is room at the table especially as we look at this passage about Jesus identifying Himself as the Good Shepherd. We know from the Psams of David and the life of David what a shepherd is and taking care of their sheep. Here we see that the shepherd who is legitimate would lay his own life life down for their sheep as Jesus has showed us by dying on the stake that he was laid his life down to give us life. we realize that even today their are people shepherds or pastors who will only get what they can out of their sheep than split when the trouble arises, but Jesus gave us an example of how a Good Shepherd would act and react. We reaize that the call is to first be committed or sold out to the way of Jesus to feed and tend His sheep or disciples to be taught in His ways and to stay through the hard times as well as the good. When you realize your own life and the people God has placed in your life, how are you doing at being the shepherd to the end? How do you relate to this analogy Jesus shared? How are you living out life for the people you are given to train up in the way of Jesus? We come and confess our sins to receive God's forgiveness in receiving His grace as we come and eat the Body of Jesus and Drink the Blood of Jesus as we partake in the Holy Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist. We come to receive singing the Hymn "Savior, like a shepherd lead us" by Author (attr.): Dorothy A. Thrupp (1836)
1. Savior, like a shepherd lead us,
Much we need Thy tender care;
In Thy pleasant pastures feed us,
For our use Thy folds prepare:
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are;
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Thou hast bought us, Thine we are.
2. We are Thine, do Thou befriend us,
Be the guardian of our way;
Keep Thy flock, from sin defend us,
Seek us when we go astray:
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray;
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Hear, O hear us when we pray.
3. Thou hast promised to receive us,
Poor and sinful though we be;
Thou hast mercy to relieve us,
Grace to cleanse, and pow'r to free:
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Early let us turn to Thee;
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Early let us turn to Thee.
4. Early let us seek Thy favor,
Early let us do Thy will;
Blessed Lord and only Savior,
With Thy love our bosoms fill:
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still;
Blessèd Jesus, blessèd Jesus,
Thou hast loved us, love us still.

Calling the Earth "Home"
Theologian Sallie McFague uses the metaphor of the earth as a way of picturing God's body. God is more than the earth, but the scale and scope of our planet helps us understand the vast complexity of God and marvel at God's beauty. Like veins carrying the lifeblood of our planet's body, rivers trace pathways from mountain to sea, watering and giving life along the way.
One of my favorite images from the prophet Isaiah uses a similar image, in which the life-giving waterways of earth help us understand the work God is doing in the world: "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mount; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it." (Isaiah 55:10-11)
In an age of satellite imagery and of microscopes, it is so easy to zoom between the perspectives that are immense and miniscule. At each level, there is wonder and beauty. During this Earth Day week, I invite you to contemplate God as being present at all those levels. And wherever we make our home on this earth, however we claim our place in things, God is present there.
May you find a moment to marvel at the beauty and goodness of God's creation. May your sense of belonging here make you even more ready to live in ways that preserve it's wellbeing, not only because doing so is necessary for humans, but because this world is God's.
Grace and peace,
Pastor Molly

Sermon Series: A Place to Call Home
In Resurrection, Jesus makes a home for us that's something new, wild and different. It's home where we're loved unconditionally, where we become family with unlikely people, and a "home" that isn't restricted to any one place.
Pastor Molly began a new sermon series on April 19, exploring what it means to find a home in God.
New Earth Day Banners
Made by our children
At last Sunday's Earth Day workshop, some of our children helped Pastor Molly make a new set of worship banners, especially for Earth Day. The cross designs are made from recycled magazines. Read more about the project on our website.
Celebrate Earth Day in Worship
Sunday, April 26
On Earth Day weekend, we celebrate God, who takes care of us, and who asks us to care for creation. Creating "home" together means welcoming everyone to the table--and tending to the well-being of all the earth. Using Psalm 23 as inspiration, we invite you to think of a place in God's creation that helps restore your soul--and email a photo (if you have one) to Pastor Molly.
Parking Reminder: If you are able, we encourage you to park at the Wells Fargo bank on Sunday mornings, and walk across the street, reserving the parking lot for those with mobility challenges or for new visitors. We also have a bike rack on the patio, for those who choose to bike to church! Thanks for your consideration.
This Sunday, Stephen will teach the second (of 2) class on the Dead Sea Scrolls! We will discuss their origins and the community that produced them. Sunday afternoon, we will cap off this class in the afternoon with a visit to the California Science Center's exhibit on the Dead Sea Scrolls, plus the IMAX movie Jerusalem!
Please note: We are no longer accepting reservations for the museum visit.

A New Way to Connect with your Church Family!
Our church is now using an online, cloud-based system for keeping our records. As a part of this system, members and regular attenders of the church can be invited to log on, where you can find an always-updated church directory, access to information about church groups and committees, and easy options for electronic giving. It's accessible from smart phones, tablets or computers.
Our children and youth departments are switching to this system for keeping all of our registration info--including emergency contact info and health information that we need for events and trips.
Many of you have already received an invitation to create a login for this system, which is called Realm. In coming weeks, we will be sending invitations to more of you. In the meantime, if you would like access, please let us know. On Sunday, May 3, Pastor Molly will host a brief walk-through of the site after each of our worship services, for those who would like to know more about how to use this convenient system!
Staff Change: Organist Carolyn Tyler Resigns
Our organist, Carolyn George Tyler, has resigned for her position, because of significant health concerns. We invite you to hold her in prayer as she seems both treatment and care in coming days; we pray for her healing and give thanks for the musical gifts she shared with God and with us in worship.
Mary Ann Stickler will be filling in on organ and piano in coming weeks, in the interim. We invite you to help welcome Mary Ann to our community.
Men's Ministry Group
Our newest ministry will be meeting again on Monday, April 27 at 7:00pm in Epworth Lounge. This group is open to all men of the church, offering a time for discussion and fellowship; creating a closer connection to each other and our church.

"50 Days of Easter?!" by Johnna Kosnoff
Easter or Christmas? Which do you celebrate more? Christmas is a period of 12 days in the church and lasts from Christmas Day to Epiphany (Yet, I imagine we all start celebrating long before Christmas Day.)
Easter is a season of 50 days (including Sundays) when we celebrate Christ’s resurrection. The color is white, symbolizing resurrection and joy. The season, called Eastertide, begins at sunset on the eve of Easter Sunday and ends on the day of Pentecost, the day we honor the gift of the Holy Spirit and the birth of the church, along with the Great Commission (Matthew 28:16-20).
As I said, Easter season is a time to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. However, it’s also a time to prepare for the mission given at Pentecost. In the early church, Lent was a season for new converts to learn about the faith and prepare for baptism on Easter Sunday. The initial purpose of the 50-day season was to continue faith formation of new Christians to prepare them for commission at Pentecost. We don’t follow this pattern of traditions much anymore since we offer baptism year-round.
Yet, Eastertide continues to be a perfect time to deepen our faith, study scripture more intensely, remember our sacrament of baptism and how it blesses us with one of “Christ’s mighty acts of salvation” and contemplate what salvation actually means. It’s an opportunity to prepare for receiving, and acting on, the upcoming Great Commission.
So, let us not only delight in the resurrection, let us practice resurrection by living into its power and wisdom. Let us be faithful this Easter season with our time and our worship. Pastor Molly is preaching a series, “A Place to Call Home.” Let us be intentional to claim our church as “home” by worshiping and breaking bread together as we prepare ourselves for Pentecost. And, let us continue rejoicing with bold Easter praises. Christ is Risen! Happy Easter! and Alleluia! Amen.
