Reflecting God - Embrace Holy Living from The Global Church of the Nazarene of Lenexa, Kansas, United States for Thursday, 2 April 2015 - "Living on Purpose" Scripture: Galatians 6:1 Brothers, suppose someone is caught doing something wrong. You who have the Spirit should set him right, but in a spirit of humility, keeping an eye on yourselves so that you won’t be tempted too. 2 Bear one another’s burdens — in this way you will be fulfilling the Torah’s true meaning, which the Messiah upholds. 3 For if anyone thinks he is something when he is really nothing, he is fooling himself. 4 So let each of you scrutinize his own actions. Then if you do find something to boast about, at least the boasting will be based on what you have actually done and not merely on a judgment that you are better than someone else; 5 for each person will carry his own load. 6 But whoever is being instructed in the Word should share all the good things he has with his instructor. 7 Don’t delude yourselves: no one makes a fool of God! A person reaps what he sows. 8 Those who keep sowing in the field of their old nature, in order to meet its demands, will eventually reap ruin; but those who keep sowing in the field of the Spirit will reap from the Spirit everlasting life. 9 So let us not grow weary of doing what is good; for if we don’t give up, we will in due time reap the harvest. 10 Therefore, as the opportunity arises, let us do what is good to everyone, and especially to the family of those who are trustingly faithful.

“Do good,” it sounds like a simple instruction. Yet, Galatians 6:1-10 lists the dangers that surround us as we attempt to do good to others: temptation (v. 1); arrogance (v.3); comparing ourselves to others (v.4); laziness (v.5); self-centeredness (v.6); being deceived (v.7); doing good to get a pat on the back (v.8); or just becoming weary in it all, and giving up the effort (v.9).
Why should we try to do good when all of this threatens to undo us? Galatians 6:8-9 has the answers, “whoever sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life,” and “at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.”
God has given each of us gifts intended to bless others. He also gives us specific “opportunities” for which we are uniquely able and positioned to minister to someone’s need.
What a joy to step into the purpose for which we are designed! Though dangers surround this high calling, Christ’s indwelling Spirit can give us the power to sincerely and humbly carry each other’s burdens.
Hymn for Today: "Burdens Are Lifted At Calvary"
1. Days are filled with sorrow and care,
Hearts are lonely and drear;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
Refrain:
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Calvary, Calvary;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
2. Cast your care on Jesus today,
Leave your worry and fear;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
Refrain:
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Calvary, Calvary;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
3. Troubled soul, the Saviour can see
Ev'ry heartache and tear;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
Refrain:
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Calvary, Calvary;
Burdens are lifted at Calvary,
Jesus is very near.
