The most amazing thing I was ever a part of as a digital organizer was supercharging anti-deportation campaigns in the undocumented youth movement. When I first got involved in the immigrant rights movement more than a decade ago, it was considered a big win if powerful and well-established organizations stopped one or two deportations a year.
Digital organizing allowed for more people to organize—and more quickly—around folks who were getting deported. Before we knew it, people were stopping one deportation a month. Soon, it was one deportation a week. Then more deportations were being stopped all across the country than any of us could count.
This eventually led to enough pressure, in enough places, and on enough public officials, to force President Obama to provide relief for undocumented youth through Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA. While imperfect and currently under threat, DACA currently provides relief from deportation and work permits to approximately 750,000 young people.
As a Groundswell member, you are also a part of systemic change like this.
When I first came across Groundswell, I was captivated. I didn't know of anyone else doing faith-based, pro-migrant digital organizing, much less with all the powerful digital tools available to Groundswell members at no cost.
Can you donate to keep Groundswell a free tool for faith-rooted organizers? Any amount you can give before June 30 will be doubled, thanks to a matching gift.
I believe that elevating enough personal, lived stories in local communities can eventually lead toward systemic change. We need responsible, values-driven platforms like Groundswell to amplify these stories and support our calls for justice.
I know the struggle for justice won't end in my lifetime. If we move toward a world where people migrate out of want and not out of need, and less toward a world where people are unjustly limited by the circumstances of their birth, I’ll consider mine a life well lived. In the meantime, I’ll continue to work to support the voices of the most vulnerable and demand the change that will get us to that world. I hope you’ll join me.
Please give today.
Much love,
