From Pastor Molly: generations
|
|
This week, I'm away at Annual Conference, the yearly gathering of our regional church body. With lay leaders from our church, including Jonathan and Ofa Tuuholoki, George Mercer and Stephen Hale, I'll share in worship, study, administration and more with the United Methodists of southern California, Hawaii, Guam and Saipan.
I have to admit: more than the official business, I love being with the people. I'm inspired by seeing the way God is at work in other congregations, in receiving encouragement from colleagues I've known over the years, and I am energized by making new friends.
At Annual Conference, we formally mark important transitions in life: new clergy are ordained, others are retired, and we remember those who have died in the past year. This year, I get to help celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of the pastor who supervised my seminary internship, 17 years ago; I'll have coffee with a Senior Pastor I worked for many years, and later with pastors who I mentored. Annual Conference always reminds me that I belong in a line of generations in the church--I stand on the shoulders of those who've come before me, even as I try to help lift up others to come after me.
This Sunday is Father's Day, which seems like a beautiful occasion to think about generations: to give thanks for the people who have come before us and helped shape us. And to work to pass on the things that matter most with those who will follow us.
This week, I invite you to think about some of the valuable things you have learned from your father or grandfathers--from mentors and teachers and colleagues--so that we can celebrate them together. Then, together, we can find ways to share them with others who will come after us.
grace and peace,
Pastor Molly
This Sunday is Father's Day; in honor of fathers, we are making a donation to UMCOR, the United Methodist Committee of Relief. If you would like to make a contribution in honor of fathers, you are welcome to make a gift marked "UMCOR."

Father's Day
"Farm Work"
Rev. Molly Vetter, preaching
Matthew 9:35-10:8
Scripture Text: Matthew 9:35 Yeshua went about all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the Good News of the Kingdom, and healing every kind of disease and weakness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them because they were harried and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. 37 Then he said to his talmidim, “The harvest is rich, but the workers are few. 38 Pray that the Lord of the harvest will send out workers to gather in his harvest.”
10 Yeshua called his twelve talmidim and gave them authority to drive out unclean spirits and to heal every kind of disease and weakness. 2 These are the names of the twelve emissaries:
First, Shim‘on, called Kefa, and Andrew his brother, Ya‘akov Ben-Zavdai and Yochanan his brother, 3 Philip and Bar-Talmai, T’oma and Mattityahu the tax-collector, Ya‘akov Bar-Halfai and Taddai, 4 Shim‘on the Zealot, and Y’hudah from K’riot, who betrayed him.
5 These twelve Yeshua sent out with the following instructions: “Don’t go into the territory of the Goyim, and don’t enter any town in Shomron, 6 but go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Isra’el. 7 As you go, proclaim, ‘The Kingdom of Heaven is near,’ 8 heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those afflicted with tzara’at, expel demons. You have received without paying, so give without asking payment.
John Wesley's Notes-Commentary: Matthew 9:35-10:8
The Book of Matthew Chapter 9
Verses:
| 9:36 | Because they were faint - In soul rather than in body. As sheep having no shepherd - And yet they had many teachers; they had scribes in every city. But they had none who cared for their souls, and none that were able, if they had been willing, to have wrought any deliverance. They had no pastors after God's own heart. |
| 9:37 | The harvest truly is great - When Christ came into the world, it was properly the time of harvest; till then it was the seed time only. But the labourers are few - Those whom God sends; who are holy, and convert sinners. Of others there are many. 10:2 . |
| 9:38 |
The Lord of the harvest - Whose peculiar work and office it is, and who alone is able to do it: that he would thrust forth - for it is an employ not pleasing to flesh and blood; so full ofreproach, labour, danger, temptation of every kind, that nature may well be averse to it. Those who never felt this, never yet knew what it is to be labourers in Christ's harvest. He sends them forth, when he calls them by his Spirit, furnishes them with grace and gifts for the work, and makes a way for them to be employed therein.
|
The Book of Matthew Chapter 10
Verses:
| 10:1 | His twelve disciples - Hence it appears that he had already chosen out of his disciples, those whom he afterward termed apostles. The number seems to have relation to the twelve patriarchs, and the twelve tribes of Israel. 3:14 ; 6:7; Luke 6:13; 9:1. |
| 10:2 | The first, Simon - The first who was called to a constant attendance on Christ; although Andrew had seen him before Simon. Acts 1:13 . |
| 10:3 | Lebbeus - Commonly called Judas, the brother of James. |
| 10:4 | Iscariot - So called from Iscarioth, (the place of his birth,) a town of the tribe of Ephraim, near the city of Samaria. |
| 10:5 | These twelve Jesus sent forth - Herein exercising his supreme authority, as God over all. None but God can give men authority to preach his word. Go not - Their commission was thus confined now, because the calling of the Gentiles was deferred till after the more plentiful effusion of the Holy Ghost on the day of pentecost. Enter not - Not to preach; but they might to buy what they wanted, 4:9 |
| 10:8 | Cast out devils - It is a great relief to the spirits of an infidel, sinking under a dread, that possibly the Gospel may be true, to find it observed by a learned brother, that the diseases therein ascribed to the operation of the devil have the very same symptoms with the natural diseases of lunacy, epilepsy, or convulsions; whence he readily and very willingly concludes, that the devil had no hand in them. But it were well to stop and consider a little. Suppose Godshould suffer an evil spirit to usurp the same power over a man's body, as the man himself has naturally; and suppose him actually to exercise that power; could we conclude the devil had no hand therein, because his body was bent in the very same manner wherein the man himself might have bent it naturally? And suppose God gives an evil spirit a greater power, to effectimmediately the organ of the nerves in the brain, by irritating them to produce violent motions, or so relaxing them that they can produce little or no motion; still the symptoms will be those of over tense nerves, as in madness, epilepsies, convulsions; or of relaxed nerves, as in paralytic cases. But could we conclude thence that the devil had no hand in them? Will any man affirm that God cannot or will not, on any occasion whatever, give such a power to an evil spirit? Or that effects, the like of which may be produced by natural causes, cannot possibly be produced by preternatural? If this be possible, then he who affirms it was so, in any particular case, cannot be justly charged with falsehood, merely for affirming the reality of a possible thing.Yet in this manner are the evangelists treated by those unhappy men, who above all things dread the truth of the Gospel, because, if it is true, they are of all men the most miserable. Freely ye have received - All things; in particular the power ofworking miracles; freely give - Exert that power wherever you come. 6:7 ; Luke 9:2 |

Last Sunday, 6/11/17, Pastor Molly gave a sermon that was truly one of her best ever. I asked if she was saving it for this week's Annual Conference at Redlands, CA, but she said no. Several of our congregation also felt the presence of God at that Worship Service based upon the scripture of Matthew 28:16-20. Look it up and read it. You'll recall Molly's comments of the phrase “but some doubted.” Even among the twelve, some doubted. Therefore, how about you and I? Last Sunday, 6/11/17, Pastor Molly gave a sermon that was truly one of her best ever. I asked if she was saving it for this week's Annual Conference at Redlands, CA, but she said no. Several of our congregation also felt the presence of God at that Worship Service based upon the scripture of Matthew 28:16-20. Look it up and read it. You'll recall Molly's comments of the phrase "but some doubted." Even among the twelve, some doubted. Therefore, how about you and I? If we question or doubt are we different from those who lived with Jesus in their midst? All of which means that we must continue to study Jesus teachings and words to live by. Yes, I'll be back this Sunday 6/18/17 and, hopefully, will keep learning from our Lord as well as our Pastor.
Also, last Sunday our church choir under the leadership of Jim Raycroft sang a Jester Hairston favorite called "Hold On" which was copy-written in 1955. They did a great and exciting job making the rendition thrilling. Years ago, my memory says it was in the mid 1960s, Jester Hairston presented a Saturday evening concert in our sanctuary. Not only was the sanctuary filled, both upstairs and downstairs, but there was standing room only. I was a temporary usher for this event and remember Hairston's jazz band bringing in musicians and worshipers as well. The placed rocked, as they say. Even though in those days there was a motion picture theater near the corner of Torrance Blvd and Catalina Avenue, all seemed to find parking and walked to the donations only presentation. No one left early and it was a thrill to just be in our building that night.
This week, being Annual Conference week, helps me remember when I was Lay Leader and represented our church in Redlands. It was great fun to renew acquaintances with former Pastors who had served our church and another I had attended in Los Angeles. This year George Mercer, Jonathon and Ofa Tuuholoaki, Stephen Hale and Pastor Molly are attending so you have a chance to ask them about the Annual Conference and the experiences they had there. If you ever get a chance to attend, try and schedule it, for you won't be sorry you went unless the heat is terrible as sometimes can be.

Dear Evan Hansen is an original musical written by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, and opened on Broadway at the Music Box Theatre in December of 2016. The title character, Evan Hansen, is a high school senior with a social anxiety disorder who finds himself amid the turmoil that follows a classmate's death. The song You Will Be Found is the finale to act 1 and involves the entire cast (although we're doing it as a solo). The cast album debuted at #8 on the Billboard 200, and at last Sunday night's Tony Awards, Kevin Spacey opened the show with You Will Be Found. The show was nominated for 9 Tony Awards, and won for Best Musical, Best Actor in a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Original Score Written for the Theatre and Best Orchestrations.
Robert Wetzler has been a prolific contributor to the world of church choir anthem since the mid- 50s. He earned his Bachelor of Arts from Thiel College in Greenville, Pennsylvania in 1954. At the Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary in 1958, he received his Masters. At the University of Minnesota, Robert accomplished extensive graduate studies in Music Theory and Composition and also continued to hone his skills on organ and piano and choral singing. Robert served as organist for both Thiel College's chapel and the Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Greenville, Pennsylvania for about one year. Then, he was Chapel Organist for Northwestern Lutheran Theological Seminary for three years before he assumed the position there of Choirmaster. Also, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, he served as Choirmaster. Later, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he was Choirmaster as well as Director of Music. From 1960 to 1963, in addition to his choral work, Robert was Assistant to the Music Editor for Augsburg Publishing House. In 1960 as well, Robert became President and Director of Publications for A.M.S.I. (Art Masters Studios Inc.) in Minneapolis and retired in 2001. His anthem Go Ye Into all The World was written as a learning tool for choirs to become familiar and comfortable with the writing forms of canons and fugues. It's a charming little piece that's easy, and fun, to sing and can be learned quickly. Freely, Freely is a hymn in our hymnbook that was written in 1972 by Carol Owens. Carol attended San Jose State College and the Cathedral School of the Bible in Oakland in the 50s. Later, she joined forces with her husband Jimmy Owens to write Christian musicals.
