Caregiving in the News
CMS - October 20, 2017
Read an update from Seema Verma, Administrator, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) on Open Enrollment, which kicked off on October 15 and will run through December 7.
Miami Herald - October 24, 2017
"The role of being a caregiver can be stressful regardless of your age. There is significant research on the effects of caregiver burden in the adult population. However, there is little data regarding caregiver burden in youth. In general, young people who are caregivers are more likely to have depression, school difficulties and problems getting along with teachers, and to bully others and behave poorly compared with children who are not caregivers."
University of Michigan - October 24, 2017
"A new poll gives a glimpse into the lives of the spouses, grown children and other family members and friends who act as caregivers for up to five million Americans with dementia. The strain of providing such care for loved ones with Alzheimer's disease and other conditions came through in the latest results from the National Poll on Healthy Aging, with 78 percent saying caregiving was stressful. But the poll also reveals the positive side of caregiving, with 85 percent of family caregivers calling it a rewarding experience."
MarketWatch | October 26, 2017
"Caregivers are not only giving their time to loved ones, but a large chunk of their finances too. More than four in 10 caregivers - someone who takes care of a family member or friend, but is unpaid for doing so - spend $5,000 or more a year on caregiving expenses. That's according to a new report from the website Caring.com, a website that provides resources about senior care and is owned by the personal-finance company Bankrate."
Politico - October 25, 2017
"That decision led to another: Would I hire a caretaker? Through my work writing about long-term care I have become keenly aware of the policy issues surrounding the country's 650,000-person paid caregiver workforce. Largely composed of women of color earning about $10 an hour, some with no health care benefits of their own, they go into the bedrooms of the elderly and disabled, lifting patients to help them get showered, dressed and groomed."

Ask Your Representative to Co-Sponsor the Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA)
Caregiver advocates: We at the National Alliance for Caregiving are asking you to express your strong support for H.R. 1676, the bipartisan Engel-Reed-Carter Palliative Care and Hospice Education and Training Act (PCHETA). This legislation will make a difference in the lives of millions of patients living with serious or life-threatening illness and their caregivers. Over 200 cosponsors and counting in the House of Representatives have endorsed the bill and your voice could help push this legislation over the finish line.
We hope you will take time to make sure your elected officials know about H.R. 1676, and ask them to add their name to the growing list of cosponsors supporting this important legislation. Thank you for your consideration. Go here to learn more about the bill. Please contact info@caregiving.org for questions.

Do You Care for Someone Rare?
To study the impact of rare disease on unpaid friends and family members who provide care (known as "family caregivers"), the Alliance and Global Genes, are launching a "first-of-its-kind" national snapshot of rare disease caregivers. This fall, the two groups plan to release a national survey aimed at collecting feedback from over 1,000 family caregivers of children and adults with rare diseases.
Participate in a Research Study on Women with Heart Disease
WomenHeart is conducting a research study to learn about the experiences women with heart disease have related to diagnostic testing. You are invited to participate in this study by completing a short survey.
We are eager to find out if women with heart disease are receiving the care, treatment, and information they need to make good decisions about their heart health.

Needed: Your Perspective as a Family Caregiver
A team of researchers at Kent State University is conducting a study that could lead to new ways of helping those who care for a person with cancer. But we need you to make this happen. We seek to interview family caregivers who are over 18 years of age and speak English. As anyone can be in the role of family caregiver, there are no other inclusion criteria except that the person currently provides at least one hour of care daily to a family member with cancer who has difficulty performing a certain task or tasks for him or herself.
Please consider participating in this important research. Interviews typically take between 30-60 minutes.
If you are interested, simply send an e-mail to drnegbert@gmail.com or phone 330-672-3314.
Cancer Support Community Seeking Caregivers
The Cancer Support Community (CSC) is looking for current cancer caregivers to participate in a new research study. The study goal is to better understand caregiver experiences with patients' cancer, nutrition, and weight change, and how these experiences affect physical and emotional health. Please consider participating if you are a current caregiver to someone with a cancer diagnosis, are at least 18 years old, and can read English. Your participation will involve completing a one-time online survey. Participants who complete the survey will be offered the chance to enter a drawing for a $50 gift card to Amazon or Walmart. Five gift cards will be awarded for every 100 caregivers who complete the survey.
To participate, please go to the following link. If you have questions about participating, please contact Shauna McManus at smcmanus@cancersupportcommunity.org or 267-295-3002 for more information.
